Octopath Traveler 0 |OT| Wealth. Fame. Power. It's yours if you want it. Find it in this remake of a mobile game.

Copy arrived, data from the demo loaded, ready to go. Was playing around with the settings in FPSLocker and the game runs pretty well at 60fps in handheld mode, though definitely has some drops when there are a lot of visual effects / particles on the screen. Using sys-click to overclock the CPU and GPU to their maximum settings results in that 60fps being extremely stable.

Although it's still running in 720p (vs the Switch 2 at 1080p) I'm pretty happy with the outcome here. Like the last two games, will probably play this predominantly on the go and the Switch 1 being more portable and having the OLED screen is just the icing on the cake.

Still, fuck these turkeys for not putting the Switch 2 game on a real cartridge or providing an upgrade path.

I don't know about 100% the game but I will definitely be finishing the game just like I did with all Octopath games.

The key enjoying this game is to play it bite size. At first I was thinking getting it on my PS5 but they way the game structured and town building I think this fits better playing on my Switch 2.

For me, it strongly depends on the game.

I'm only ok with 100 hours in a SMT game these days, I felt like Octopath 1 dragged on and I didn't feel like it was worth all the time put in to it.

Give me a 40 hour or 50 hour quality JRPG and focus on just having a great experience vs this weird forced padding that shit. It makes it feel like a bunch of filler. So I'll play this, but I'm not putting 100 hours in it lol Not everything needs to be 100 hours
 
Just watched some reviews and damn…this iterations fixes some issues I had with the other games: it has a cohesive story, your main character can perform actions, and the map has helpful icons.

The battle pair system looks fun as hell, too.

I was going to wait, but I don't think I can!

For me it doesn't matter how long the game is as long as it's satisfying and for me all Octopath games were satisfying experience so I was more than happy finish them.

yea I don't know about that lol

I liked 2 more then 1, I felt 1 dragged on and the story felt disjointed and pointless, it felt like Ai made the story and forgot they all should be talking to each other lol

I like the gameplay more then the story in the series so far. So I hope the story in 0 is good, but I'll be happy to play regardless if the job system is like the other titles.

I also liked 2nd game more but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoyed 1st game…..I personally loved it.

After playing about 6 hours today... the answer is kind of "both".

There are essentially 4 main quest lines - wealth, fame, power, and town building. These feel a lot like the character questlines in the previous two games - they are more or less self-contained and the plot lines don't interact with each other (until the end, I'm guessing, just like the other two games). There are also character side quests to recruit new party members, these so far have been short little side quests - and again, since you can do these in seemingly any order, there doesn't seem to be interactions between party members already in your party.

BUT you have a main character (who is mute) that undertakes all of these and is the central point of the narrative. As you complete the main and side quests, it's like you're tagging along on a singular grand adventure - rather than the series tradition of having eight separate stories that just happen to take place in the same world.

It's nothing groundbreaking, but feels like JRPG comfort food to me.

This is a prequel to the first game, but there does seem to be some nods to the first game in this one. They specifically called this one "zero" because they wanted people to know that this was an okay starting spot in the series.

Honestly, I'd say any game in the series is a good starting point - including this one.
 
The game does have party chats like it did in previous games where your party characters do interact with each other. I noticed it in the Tavern in Wishvale. Not sure if it only happens there, or if there are other places as well.

Also, if anyone recruits characters, please consider adding their information (location, recruit requirements, etc) to the spreadsheet linked on first page in my comment so it helps other people as well. The "Character" sheet has a row for unlock requirements, so add the detail there please.

I LOVE Octopath 1 and 2 and bought both games' soundtracks on CD as well. I'll have to get this once I'm done with Metroid but I'm at a loss as to which version to get. Switch 2 has great performance but I have to deal with that awful Game-Key Card. Switch 1 is fully physical but worse visuals. PS4 would look nice and be on the disc but I can't play handheld.

Ugh. Game-Key Cards are truly a blight. I'm considering going Switch 2 digital, which is kind of ridiculous for an RPG.
 
I didn't play the mobile version of this, but since they made it into a single player experience, I'll give it a shot. I'm a sucker for Octopath.
 
Played straight for quite a few hours and only now taking a break. I had done everything in the demo, so once the game unlocked I basically put the story stuff on hold and went exploring to unlock all towns with my level 16 characters. I've done the eastern side and unlocked the level ~40 Berecain (spelling?) town, among the rest. Also worked on Wishvale and got the town to level 4 and unlocked the training ground. Gameplay really opens up after the training ground. Keen to start creating a proper party now.

Game is absolutely addicting.
 
Lovin' the game play of course, but a little disappointed in the re-using of so many assets from the first game, and I'm finding the music to not match the atmosphere. The Sunlands theme playing in Valore? That's just wrong.
 
Same here Steam version..Played for 3 hours and have not noticed any of the audio issues mentioned in the steam thread. Voices are clear..no popping...Abilities effects are fine and so is the background music.
 
This game is kind of set up like Fantasy Life I, but with turn based gameplay. I put 180 hours into that game like it was nothing, so I'm not as intimidated by this one anymore.

Already put 3 hours in and I've got a lot going on now lol

I'll put in another hour...or three...before bed.

But it's predominantly the same story, and has the same front row / back row / eight characters in battle mechanic from the mobile game. They just removed all the gacha stuff and guest characters, and re-balanced it.

Earlier this year, the rights to the mobile game got sold off to Netease, and it's been getting progressively worse since.

Yeah it definitely does! It bothered me at first, but I got over it pretty quickly. The gameplay, story, and music has me hooked.

So far, I'm enjoying it a lot more than Octo 1 and 2. Hopefully I can finally beat one of these games lol
 
I heard that this octopath traveler have a 100-150 hours you can invest in it...very good value for the price. Cant wait to play it. finishing Mario and luigi brothership first !

Seems like you'd enjoy it a lot! I'm about 5 hours in and am loving it.

How's Brothership? I almost picked that up last week. Are you on Switch 2? If so, is performance okay?
 
Been playing this a ton the last couple of days. My party is level 17, and I'm almost done with all the chapter 2 quests for each route.

I absolutely love the amount of character customization that's possible with this game (class moves, equipped "learned" moves, equipped buffs, etc.) but the one thing that feels like it's missing is the ability to customize your stack of passives. Like the merchant gets the passive that gives you more money from battles, cool - now if I change the main character to a different class, I can't re-equip that passive buff. It makes changing classes feel a bit pointless, and like starting over in a way. It's kind of the cornerstone of the class systems from most JRPGs to carry over learned abilities, so it feels a bit odd that it's absent here.

Other than that, I'm really enjoying this. The different main stories all being their own self-contained thing that I can hop from one to the other and back definitely makes this feel like an Octopath game.

14 hours on my save so I think I still have quite a ways to go lol

You can do that in a different way later (level up your town and build the training grounds).
 
I went the Switch 1 version since it's all on the game cart. I am NOT buying a game key card.

BUT, I played the demo on my Switch 2. I put my Switch 1 cart in my Switch 2 and the demo doesn't carry over to the Switch 1 version. So I have to start over.

Since I bough Metroid Prime 4 I decided to play that on my Switch 2 and Octopath 0 on my Switch OLED.

Just sucks I have to replay the slow first couple hours.
 
I was surprised how bad it looks. Dull, lifeless environments with pixel character and environment models they might have had the unpaid interns design. For a full price game id have expected more. But if I pretend I have glaucoma it becomes bearable.
