Of Monsters and Men are a six piece indie/folk/ska band from Iceland and the 2010 winners of Músíktilraunir (a nation wide battle of the bands competition).[1]

The band has had major success in the United States with their song "Little Talks". The Seattle based radio station KEXP recorded it live over 2011 the Iceland Airwaves festival.[2] In August 2011, the song also debuted on Radio 104.5 out of Philadelphia and quickly went into heavy rotation due to an overwhelmingly positive response.[3] The rise in sales led to a record label bidding war for the then unsigned band. The band signed with Universal Music Group and their debut single will be released worldwide in early 2012.[4] Their debut album My Head is an Animal was released in Iceland September 2011.[5]

David Fricke of Rolling Stone Magazine called them "New Arcade Fire" and Iceland's Mumford and Sons.[5]

In January 2012, "Little Talks" was released as a free single on iTunes. It has charted in the United States.[6]

WTF is this?

Yeah, let me be the first troll to say that the song pretty much sucks. Faux-indie shit with boring voices and nothing new. It sounds like "adult rock".

A fairly accurate assessment isn't really trolling. Regardless of how many years they've been together (I have no idea, but presumably not long) their sound is awfully derivative of what's been popular in the indie scene for a few years and most of the songs seem to follow an identical structure - which is somewhat acceptable if you're a duo, but less forgivable when we're talking about a congregation and a U-Haul filled with wincingly quaint folk instruments.

On the plus(?) side, the girl's vocals sound exactly like Julia Stone, blonde guy in the Fair Isle is kind of cute, and there's a remote possibility that at some future Bumbershoot event their touring van could accidentally back over Tune-Yards, killing her instantly.

Honestly, though, they're having a good time and lots of folks will dig the music, so I can't fault the band for doin' what they do.

Haters gonna hate. The band is not adult rock. They just signed to a label. Quite a bit different than adult rock. I get if you don't like them, but to call them mainstream and adult rock is laughable.

I've been listening to this song for the last couple days. Really digging it. This is outside my normal realm of music listening, but it's undeniably catchy.

Also, rainbow buffalo? Fuck yeah.
