Hehehe... I said 'duty'.

APOPKA, Fla. -- An Ocoee police officer quit a day after he was shocked with a Taser when Apopka police were called to the scene of a road-rage incident.

Norman Willis and another off-duty officer said they had been cut off three times by a pickup truck early Thursday when they were confronted by two men in an intersection.

Apopka police say the Ocoee officers got into a fist fight with two men from the pickup, and Willis lost his service pistol in a struggle with a passenger from the pickup. Apopka police shocked Willie as the two men were scuffling.

Willis, 35, was a rookie serving his probationary period when he resigned Friday.

The other officer, Jason Price, has been assigned to desk duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Pickup driver Larry Johnston, 27, of Apopka is free on $500 bail after being charged with drunken driving. He told police that he drank six beers before the incident.

Good riddance. I don't think we need cops that have a habit of taking justice into their own hands while off-duty. What's the guy doing with his pistol anyway?

Meh, those cops just seem to love using their taser whenever possible anyways. Especially these Florida cops down here.

Since its a non-lethal weapon, they feel they can use it indiscriminately - or so it seems by how often I hear about it being used.

Plenty of cops carry an off duty pistol just in case, my father included

Quick update to this story -- the guy is actually the son of the office manager at my work (weird huh?) and a really nice guy. I'd read this article but he didnt know him by Norman since he goes by Danny. Anyway, what happened was the person driving the vehicle he was in was also an off-duty cop and when the two fellas from the car in front got out of their car and were coming towards the one Danny was in, the driver (Jason apparently) got out with his gun to try and stop the other guys from doing anything stupid but they didn't relent.

Danny had to get out of the car as well and draw his gun too in case the road ragers had guns of their own but he lowered it when one came running at him. He was attempting to put it back in the car but it fell to the ground and the guy punched him in the face. Cops arrived soon after when the gun was on the ground and tasered him without knowing it was a cop's service pistol. Apparently the video from the cop car showed Danny was on the ground when tasered although the cops say they thought it was because he was going for the gun (ironically, his own).

It's sad though, Danny was in the army on one of the bomb squad units for over 10 years and just got back from Iraq/Afghanistan in the past year or so where he had been serving for a few years (and lost men from his unit, including his best friend having a mine go off under him). He's a good guy, didn't deserve this happening to him.

Yeah, my dad generally carried his gun with him while off-duty. It's not as though he secretly went crime-fighting at night, but if he were in a situation where he could help somebody or defend his family, he certainly would've acted upon it. Thankfully in his several years of service, things never came down to him having to use the weapon on anyone. He'd be the first to say that several police officers are head-strong and act before thinking.
