Office/gaming chairs, high end (miller, all steel, etc) vs others

I'd like opinions from people that have bought office chairs / gaming chairs for $500+

I'm looking to build an office in a house I just bought and my friend can get me an all steel relate chair for around $500 (essentially at cost, I think it's supposed to be $1k? She could have gotten me Acuity for ~$750?). I've only spent about $100 on chairs before. I'm just trying to understand the differences in chair 'xyz' on amazon or at a local B&M vs. these high end chairs.

I plan to work from home during my busy season as much as possible and I spend a lot of time on my desktop PC via work and gaming.

When you bought, could you go back? Did you?

Thanks for any input.

i work from home, just got a herman miller all mesh chair, cannot recommend it enough.

you should check out used, craigslist etc. In houston we have a facebook group where people sell things, this guy had 10 of them he was selling pretty much like new with tags on them for $450.

Wow.

Any specifics? Is it the back support? Legs? Just the total package?

edit: As someone whose roommate just had bed bugs I'm highly skeptical of buying anything second hand furniture wise right now :lol :lol

it was the whole chair...

it seemed to me he got them either from a company that went out of business and left them or from evicting a tenant who left them. But the one i got was wrapped in saran wrap and still had the tag on it.

I have a 15 year old Steelcase Leap that I got for like... $40 from an office warehouse that. Yeah it has probably been farted on 10,000 times but who cares.

Just make sure you buy a complete one because these companies charge an arm and a leg for spares (hurr).

I have a Herman Miller Aeron and a Humanscale Freedom.

I bought the Aeron ages ago, before the new lumbar support option. That one looks more durable than the original form, which is dense foam rubber and prone to breaking. I also bought a third party headrest that attaches to the back and is pretty nice. I bought the Aeron new, and I like I always say in these kinds of threads, they have a great warranty.

The Freedom obviously isn't as breathable as the Aeron, but the headrest is nicer (it swings forward as you recline) and the armrests are connected via the back, so they're always at the same height. Freedoms are even more expensive than Aerons, but I got mine used on Craigslist for under a third of list price, so I'm happy about that.

But if you can, find one you can try out for at least long enough to forget good posture.

I microwave steaks.
I have the DX racer king (gaming chair) and I can't really reccomend it over a general office chair. It's firm, almost too firm.

"Gaming chairs" aren't even in the same league as something like the Herman Miller Aeron chair. Those gaming chairs, like the ones you see a lot of the Twitch streamers peddling on their streams are junk. Myself, I use a Herman Miller Mirra chair -- although I will soon be selling it since I've switched to a sit-stand desk in favor of a Muvman Sit-Stand stool.

I have a Herman Miller Embody at home and a Steelcase Leap at work.

The first piece of advice I will give you is that you shouldn't buy based on opinions on the internet about how comfortable they are. I tried a lot of ergo chairs, and hated some of the ones that have good reviews. It depends on your body - height, the curve of your back, preferred sitting posture, etc. For instance, I really liked the Humanscale Freedom when reclining, but found it uncomfortable for sitting upright. You should really try this stuff out before dropping $1K on a chair. Find a store that offers several models, bring your laptop, and sit in each chair for at least half an hour, making sure to adjust it first.

The second piece of advice is that you shouldn't expect an ergo task chair to be comfy. The purpose of them is to be able to sit for long periods of time without hurting your back. But you're not going to look forward to collapsing in one of these chairs at the end of a long day to watch a movie, the way you would with an easy chair or a couch. They just don't have much padding. When I want to play console games or watch a movie, I push the task chair out of the way and sit in a bean bag instead.

I would recommend an office chair over a gaming chair since I believe you pay a mark up for the latter.

In general I would definitely say a "high end" chair is worth it to some degree. Maybe not for a couple k but upwards of 300 for sure. Main benefit is that they will not break and you will be able to use this chair for 10+ years.

Go around to office supply stores and sit in chairs. Seriously, you need to literally feel them out. After that, sit on your choice for a night or two then make a decision

We got two HM Embody chairs with arms for our home office during a Christmas sale, and it's very helpful for long gaming sessions and work. People's advice for going out and trying the chairs in person before buying one is paramount. The one good thing about higher end office chairs is they have tons of little adjustment levels you can fiddle with it to get comfy.
