Official: 1080p - the standard PS3 resolution

UPDATE - 6:22PM - We have just been updated by our away team at the SCEA conference that not only will 1080p be supported by the system, but that this is considered the standard resolution for the system. Every game for the system will be in incredible, indelible, indubitable HD.

Only problem is, my 5000 dollar Sony HDTV WEGA only support upto 1080i (and I don't even think it supports 1080 vertical lines) and it was top of the line. Sure, new HDTV in future would support 1080p, but WTF. I feel robbed by investing early! :(

This will be incredible if true. It's almost too good to be true, as there are hardly any 1080p capable displays on the market (this is sure to change in the next couple of years) and all of the demos displayed in the video were running at 720p. As it stands, I will most definitely buy a PS3 at launch.

it can downscale to 1080i right?

It will be scalable to whatever you plug it in to...1080p will just be available for every game if you have the ability to use it. So if you only have 1080i you will be fine.

It's more of a dick waving feature if you ask me. How many people actually have a TV that supports 1080p? I know I'll be playing next-gen games at 1080i.

um..i bet a lot of tv's will start supporting it soon, but think what you want moron

Can you hook PS3 up to a computer monitor any easier than current consoles? Buying all sorts of VGA boxes and crap is a pain in the ass.

Due out in Japan in March 2006, arrival dates for the console in North America and Europe have yet to be announced. Furthermore, an upgraded version of the console will arrive three months later with a larger hard drive and a write-capable Blu-Ray drive. Pricing for the former model will be approximately $300 USD, whilst the latter is expected to sell in the $450-$550 USD range.

Does this mean a HD is included in the base model? If so ++1 sale.

It makes sense. I bet the GPU has gobs of 1080p. Maybe renders everything internally at 1080p native and then downsamples. So you get "supersampling" for anything lower? Just a guess. Not like you need AA at 1080p either. Man, it just gets better and better. I hope there's only one version for $300, and that it does all this stuff standard. PEACE.

I think people are reading too much into this. 1080p will mainly be an output for BlueRay movies in High Def. You will find that games will be natively produced at 720p.

Hopefully Samsung introduces a 46" 1080p in 2006. I wanted to buy a 720p for x360, but I think I'll have to wait a while.

1080p is great, HDMI is great, but come on. Most HD sets for the next three or four years will be 720p/1080i and there are currently like, three available. Reading this post would make you think that everyone on GAF had already bought one.

As screen prices come down, the tech is not going to go up at an appreciable rate. Plasma and LCD screens will get cheaper as yields get better - that's the main metric. And there won't be any CRT 1080p sets for obvious reasons.

The defacto standard for this gen of TV is 720p/1080i, so get used to it. But for the wealthy, 1080p is BITCHIN.

PS, is there any reason the 360 can't output 1080p?

HDTVs rolling out toward end of this year will have 1080p support.

Main reason Xbox 360 can't support 1080p easily is because of the 10M embedded framebuffer.

This can only result in better looking 3rd party games.

Compared to the crap we trudged through this generation, I welcome the chang3.

1080p on PS3 is unlikely, not unless you want to give up FP32 HDR or cut down on game assets. Definitely not enough for MSAA on top of that.

There's just not enough memory or bandwidth to do it with that kind of quality.

p = progressive = 60fps

i = interlaced = 30fps

I am talking about full frames, not fields (interlace). I thought that was a limitation on 1080p display or something. Perhaps I heard it wrong.

In any case, I highly doubt that most titles would display that resolution natively...if you had a display that had that native resolution anyway. I figure the standard natively rendered mode will be 720p.

The trailer was made by selecting a bunch of in-game moves/cool things, Then those frames making up those bits were output at 1080p from the engine

nobody really needs 1080p right now, but I love it how MS hypes the HighDef era and Sony has the better video format as well as a real HighDef media format.

He also said the indoor scene ran fine and the outdoor scene chugged.

None of this is final, he might not want FP32 or MSAA with the effects he wants to do, or the art assets he has.

NTSC standard is 60 frames per second both interlaced and progressive.

Why do we really not need 1080p right now? When does it become important to have?

Hmm kind of funny that Microsoft talks about HD era, but it is the ps3 that is the only real HD machine (1080P with games and Blueray HD movies)
...

With xbox 360 you can´t even watch HD movies

HD era my ass....

sorry, most people dont need it...and it will become important when more people have the hardware

Unless I missed it, Sony is not requiring or guaranteeing 720p support in every game, let along 1080p. We'll see if this "feature" ends up getting any actual usage.

MS will be standardizing every game on 360 for 720p.

Therefore, MS is doing all of Sony's legwork for them when the ports come around.

It's kind of funny that MS is blasting at the top of their lungs about the HD era, and how it will be revolutionary and they're going to usher in an amazing new experience to games, and then their console has a lower display resolution standard and doesn't even play HD movies, which their competitor does. :p

Most people dont have broadband internet I guess we still dont need network adapters in consoles.

That's incredible. I find it funny that one company says it, and then the other company really does it. That's what it feels like, atm. If Sony comes up with a competent alternative to Xbox Live...

The title to this thread is just misleading ... all they said is that it would be supported in the hardware as a standard resolution, which may or may not end up getting used for anything more than super-high def Tetris

Jeez, some of you make me want to puke you're so naive. If you think every PS3 game is going to be running in 1080p, I'll eat my fucking shoes. Stop being such assholes. I'm excited about the PS3, but I know pretty damn well that Bluray and 1080p are going to be barely utilized for most of this console's life.

Uh, IGN posted that 1080p is considered the standard resolution. That's what we're discussing. IF TRUE, and please note the word If there, it is AMAZING.

Yes, if true that is amazing and I have some shoes to eat. It seems pretty far fetched right now, though, considering maybe 2% of this generation's games were even in 720p or 1080i.

1 - mind your manners.

2 - Bluray is an integral part of PS3. Thanks to 6x BRD-ROM, PS3 is going to have very impressive average access/load times. And HUGE storage.

3 - 1080p part - it's IGN's claim.

Okay mom. It's pretty easy to get pissed off when people are being asses about something they barely seem to understand. Just more dick waving, which this forum has had enough of in the last 24 hours.

No argument here.

Right. Do you think all PS3 games will be in 1080p by default? Hey, I'd love to see it even though I doubt I'll own a 1080p set (just bought a 720p/1080i two months ago), but like I mentioned above, 720p games are still a rarity in 2005. Now everything will be 1080p? Hell of a jump. Again, I'd love to see it.

I wouldn't be surprised if many were, Sony has had this odd fixation with targeting 1080p for sometime. Every iteration of their graphic subsystem has targetted this, which is somewhat smart as most of the CE industry will be moving towards supporting 1080p as DLP, LCD and LCOS scale downward, why support anything less? For them the components scale like how Intel increases preformance when moving from 150 to 130nm and 90nm, it's just not worth it to stick with less.
