Official: 1080p - the standard PS3 resolution

I wouldn't be surprised if many were, Sony has had this odd fixation with targeting 1080p for sometime. Every iteration of their graphic subsystem has targetted this, which is somewhat smart as most of the CE industry will be moving towards supporting 1080p as DLP, LCD and LCOS scale downward, why support anything less? For them the components scale like how Intel increases preformance when moving from 150 to 130nm and 90nm, it's just not worth it to stick with less.

Oh, I'm not arguing that 1080p isn't the standard to shoot for. Sony made the right move in making it the ultimate target they'd like developers to live up to. But let's look at it practically instead of through the hype of a press conference. Do you think, say, Madden 2006 and Prince of Persia 4 and whatever 3rd party titles will be in 1080p? Developers don't want to do it. Anyone could have made 720p or 1080i titles for the Xbox for 5 years now and very very few have. It's expensive and time consuming. Now add in the factor that damn near no one will have a 1080p set, and why would they want to use resources and time and money shooting for a resolution 1% of the consumers will even see?

Besides, I just got pissed that some people (andy, loffer) can't talk about the benefits of the PS3 w/o taking shots at MS. Grow up. This board makes it hard to root for Sony.

Look at this way...with the advanced GPUs PS3 and X360 have, even if the target assets aren't actually 1080i/p, they can just scale them up internally and output. I'm doubting that most games will be designed around that resolution of art. I figure most stuff will be 720p and then upscaled, like all the stuff for X360 will be. I'm not sure what's preventing X360 from displaying 1080p anyway...seems capable of it since it supposedly contains a specialized scaler just for the purpose of correctly matching what ever output you want.

They don't? Many developers (infact most) who made cross platform games would improve the baseline PS2 SKU in ways much more time and productivity consuming than a simple resolution switch, be them shading effects, texture resolution, models, et al.

See, I think they would if their target platform supported it. Which is where it gets interesting, with PlayStation3 being the primary platform and being the more advanced platform this time around. Will developers target PS3 and 1080p (likely being the largest userbase) or will they target X360 (why comes to mind). In the past, targeting the lowest common denominator made sense as it's userbase was 5X the competition, not so this time around.

its funny how alot of the ps3 media is in 720p. seems like sony put down the 1080p mandate just recently (friday? ;)
