It has passed in a few countries so far. The news keep bringing up the upcoming French vote with the possibility of the No vote passing (though not likely) so let's use this opportunity to discuss whether you are for the constitition or not, regardless of your European country of residence.

As an American, I'd like to ask if we can borrow parts of the EU constituion, notably the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

That being said, we here in the states are having hard enough time keeping our own Constitution from being obliterated, much less having the opportunity to add on or amend our existing one!

I'm pro-Europe but I don't like the idea of a continent-wide constitution. Keep it as it is now, IMO - each country should have control over the important things like its own tax and fiscal policy

The thing is IT IS the EU's plan to become one superstate to be a superpower like america and china.

I think this will be a good thing, although scary.

Generally I am pro EU-Constitution (with small reservations), even more since I read that article here. But decide for yourself.

John Palmer, Policy Director of the European Policy Centre in Brussels, takes this view.

"I believe there will be a Yes vote in France because people are only now realising that the constitution actually balances existing EU rules. It adds in the Charter of Fundamental Rights, it strengthens collective decision making, its gives a greater role to the European Parliament which was the body which really blocked the draft services directive recently as being insufficiently sensitive to social needs.

"All of this works to qualify neo-liberal economic policies. If you vote No, you are left with the existing rules. It would be cutting off your nose to spite your face and would be completely illogical."

I'm pro almost anything that doesn't involve Turkey. The new constitution will be even more difficult for Turkey to live up to than the old one, so that's just one more reason for me to vote Yes. I'm from Denmark. We have the referendum in September. Of course, if the French or another large country votes No before then, our referendum will be cancelled because it'll be meaningless, so I'm following those referendums closely.
