'Angels' nabs heavenly opening. Sony sequel soars to top of weekend box office

Sony's religious-themed sequel "Angels & Demons" opened to a massive $104.3 million from 96 countries at the international box office, but Paramount holdover "Star Trek" gave it a run for its money in the U.S.

"Angels," directed by Ron Howard and toplining Tom Hanks, grossed $48 million from 3,527 theaters domestically for a per location average of 13,609 and worldwide total of $152.3 million.

"Star Trek" enjoyed an excellent hold in its second sesh at the domestic B.O., dropping just 46% to an estimated $43 million from $3,860 theaters for a cume of $147.6 million in its first 10 days.

No one expected "Angels" to match the boffo opening of "The Da Vinci Code," which opened to $77.1 million domestically and a massive $155 million overseas.

Dan Brown's book "Da Vinci" was a global phenom, selling 80 million copies. "Angels" sold half as many copies. Sony said it couldn't have hoped for a better opening for "Angels," and said the film has already earned back the cost of its production budget.

"Angels" scored the biggest international film since "Indiana Jones and the Kindgom of the Crystal Skull" over Memorial Day weekend in 2008. That film grossed $146 million over the holiday weekend.

Overseas, "Angels" saw its strongest biz in Catholic Countries.

The Sony sequel received only so-so reviews, while "Star Trek" is one of the best reviewed movies of the year.

J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" is benefiting from strong word-of-mouth, evidenced by such a strong soph sesh. It beat "Angels" on Saturday, seeing a 56% uptick from Friday to Saturday.

Coming in No. 3 at the domestic box office after "Angels" and "Star Trek" was 20th Century Fox's "Wolverine," which dipped 44% in its third weekend for a domestic cume of $151.1 million. Pic was the first of the summer tentpoles to roll out.

damn Star Trek is going to cruise by Xmen with no problems.

that guy in earlier threads who said ST could beat out Angels and Demons i thought was crazy, but he was close! Anyone know what A&D was expected to do? Number seems pretty damn low.

Star Trek will easily pass 250 million. It has amazing legs (Wolverine dropped 69% it's second weekend).

Man, Star Trek came so close. Still a great weekend.

:lol Angels and Demons. Everyone estimated over $50mil. Davinci made almost $80 it's first weekend.

Star Trek will soon be the #1 movie of 2009, it will be topped by Transformers obviously but for a while Trek will be the #1 movie of the year, who could have imagined that a few years ago? lol

Star Trek should be able to pass 300 million with word of mouth like this.
Nah I think that is pushing it, I think it'll hit 270 mil, but 300 is out of reach.

I think they were aiming for around 70 million. Which was the opening numbers for the first movie.

Battle For Terra under 2 million TOTAL in week 3.

Makes Dragonball look like a super success.

Battle for Terra was a completely independent film that was finished a year ago and Lions Gate just picked it up for distro so Lions Gate didn't have much to lose. Granted, the film opened to 1,100 screens and I think the average film print cost is around 3000 dollars which means Lions Gate did indeed make a loss but not to the degree that Fox took for Dragon Ball but then again Dragon Ball did make almost 50 million overseas some how. Lions Gate should recoup with video since this is an animated film.

If Star Trek was a game it would have gotten a 9.5.
The movie gets an 8.3 and its a must see.
Anyone else sees this difference in scores?
Why do games have to be almost 'perfect' in order to be good?

Video game critics are far more forgiving than movie critics.

Videogames haven't reached high art status yet (or at least to the point where there is an devout audience for high art games like there is for independent cinema).

Because video game criticism is (more often than not) a joke?

Because game reviewers dont know shit. And give out 10s based on hype, without even playing the whole game. Also games are much more expensive than movies. You can watch 7 movies almost for the price of most new games in canada now.

That there startship Enterprise certainly has some nice legs on it....

Damn good movie and very much deserving too. I loved it, as did my wife who hates anything sci-fi.

their analysis of star trek is wrong. 3 day to 3 day is only 42% (like the graph says). Their 46% includes last thursday's grosses which should not be counted.

42% for Star Trek is insane. It will easily approach $300M at this point. with normal declines it should land somewhere between $270-290M. with continued slim declines it could easily cross $300M. If it drops less than 42% or less next week it should pretty easily reach closer to $300M. If it drops under 40% next week it would indicate that it will probably cross $300M.

I also like how I said A&D would be in the $40Ms this week and was told that would be a bomb.. yet here we are at $48M. note that I DO NOT find that to be a bomb... just called it that the hype and built-in audience for A&D was nowhere near DaVinci.

I saw Angels and Demons. What an awful movie. I honestly believe that 90% of the people in the theatre (including myself) didn't know WTF was Tom Hanks saying. :lol

Unlikely. Angels & Demons was a different audience (skews older), but it's now going to go up against Terminator/Night at the Museum, Up, The Hangover, etc. in successive weeks. I think $250 is very doable but I think $300 is out of reach.

So Angels and Demons already made back it's production?!
It's no wonder studio try to pimp out the world release opening weekend more than ever.
DVC made over 2x internationally what it made domestic so in this case it's not so much the day and date release that was cause of success. My guess is that they do it more often on event films to help prevent piracy's impact.

I'm officially striking this and the previous movie from my mental record of Tom Hawks awesomeness.

The first film was so god awful on every level I cannot fathom why he would come back for seconds.

Didn't Hanks get paid some insane amount for this movie?

Yeah, seriously. I was nodding off every time he went off on one of his exposition filled ramblings. Total snoozefest. Well, at least until the last 20 minutes where it becomes completely preposterous, non-stop hilarity.

I was under the impression the first movie was generally considered a bad movie so I wasn't sure why there was such media hype for this.

Holy shit @ Star Trek's drop. Very impressive stuff. May Star Trek live long and prosper at the box office. :D

Great hold for Star Trek, everybody at work was buzzing about the movie this entire week. Of course I work at University Tech Support, so our office is filled with undercover Trekkies.

It's so strange looking at RottenTomatoes right now and seeing the ratings for the Top Box Office.

1. Angels and Demons - 38%
2. Star Trek - 95%
3. X-Men Origins Wolverine - 37%
4. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past - 28%
5. Obsessed - 19%

Star Trek 2 is going to be HUGE, just you watch. They snagged a lot of new fans with Star Trek 2009, and word of mouth + dvd sales is going to make the second movie an even bigger success. They'll be raking in the cash Dark Knight style.

Next week is going to be very interesting. Terminator Salvation AND A Night at the Museum 2. Two heavy hitters, I wonder how well Trek and Demons will hold up.

I really really really wished, critic and fan scores = money at the box office

Crap movies that are overhyped still bring in $$$$$$ more often than good movies.

I thought DaVinci Code was a great adaption of the book. And the book was a very entertaining read. The movie got average reviews.
I will see Angels and Demons (which I've also read).

I'm surprised Angels and Demons would have a lower rating on rt. I found the movie a heck of lot more enjoyable to watch than the first, much faster paced, more eventful, with a pretty awesome assassin villian.
