Ogre Battle 64 Appreciation Thread

Until RE4 came out, this was my favorite game of all time next to the two N64 Zeldas. I loved the characters, the graphics, the music, the story, the gameplay, EVERYTHING about this title. The different endings you could get based on your Chaos Frame, the changes between events in the game based on how you played, including certain missions and party members you could get. It was just a fantastic, lengthy quest, with an awesome main story, a lot of extra side-missions to do, awesome technical aspects, and great replayability. I never have gotten bored with this game when I've sat down to play, and I've played through the game around 10 teams, each of which I spent at least 70 hours on.

Express your love of Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber here. The game deserves it.

Truly one of the greatest games ever made.

Hope it's on Rev's VC. It's one of those super rare N64 games now isn't it?

This is, to me, THE best game on N64. I always liked the class struggle first chapter of Final Fantasy Tactics more than the rest of the game, and this is like a whole game of that first chapter.

I never did beat it though. I got hopelessly stuck on the first battle when you fight a legion. I'd like to go back to it one day and finish it, because it's really a fantastic game.

It most likely will be on VC, as Nintendo published it in Japan.

My squad on OGRE is three Lichs in the back row. I almost feel guilty. Not. Mwahaha, evil rules.
a Dragoon and Magnus in the front, with each of the liches having three drakonite spells? :D

would it be okay with the admins if I posted a USF dump of the OB64 music?

One of my favorite games ever. Got me into RPGs really. After that I was blessed with Chrono Trigger.

I got like, the 2nd to worse ending the first time. The one where you're forgotten. 2nd time around, I always liberated towns(after learning about the alignments), made good choices, and came out a King and had a son. (as I recall).

This game did not come out in America, correct? I wasn't into N64 during its heyday, and for some reason I have never seen it made clear before, although people mention it often enough.

Looks cool.

It did come out in America. It was localized and published by Atlus USA.

Never was releaesd in Europe, however.

But hey, we never got Kururin or Terranigma in America, so I guess we're even. :D

O rly? I was always under the impresssion it didn't. I may try to find a reasonably priced copy.

I have wanted Terranigma ever since the first time I saw it. Loved Soul Blazer, never played Illusion of Gaia though. /derail

I'm pissed that there wasn't an Ogre Battle for the GC...damn Square Enix!

Indeed, they bought Quest but haven't put them to good use AT ALL.

Wtf.

never got a chance to play this game because I never found it on stores >:|

I really do wish Quest would've put out a couple games this gen (Knights of Lodis doesn't count.) Oh well, at least Matsuno, Sakimoto and Yoshida are working on Final Fantasy XII. It's really the only reason I'm so excited for it.

I'm fiending for a new Tactics Ogre or even Final Fantasy Tactics.

Well matsuno DID direct FFT and FFTA, although FFTA was horrible, and I find FFT to be inferior to Ogre Battle 64 (which, along with The Knight of Lodis, Matsuno had no involvement with)

Yep, one of my favorite games of all time. Not too many games like it nowadays. I remember I paid 60 bucks for it when it first came out. Worth every penny.

Yup, major props for this game. Played the SNES version to DEATH with friends, each taking their turn to beat the game after the other one was finished. Same thing happened with the N64 version. Will be one of the first games I purchase on the Revolution via the DL. /thumbs up!

Matsuno didn't direct FFTA, although he did produce it and the general concepts for the story and game systems were his. (OB64 was also based on his scenario outline)

Also, Square didn't buy Quest, only their game division. Quest still exists as a software and IT services company, they just decided to quit the game business.

People saying that Square bought Quest is essentially the same thing as you mentioned. You're just calling people out on a technicality. :/

But yeah, I'd like to know what those Quest guys have been up to. Hopefully they haven't left Square for Mist Walker or something. (or maybe that's a good thing)

Really though, the only reason Square bought out Quest was so Matsuno could own Ogre Battle again. However given the rumors about him, it's unlikely that he'll make another game. :( Which means that Square won't even bother.

On a sidenote, I hope NOA doesn't censor the text in this game if they put it on the virtual console. :D Gotta love the classic swearing lines in OB64.

I saw this for sale awhile ago (last year). Its probably still sitting there too. hmmmmmm, is this a tactics/strategy game?

Yes, of sorts. It reminds me of the war games in Final Fantasy VII, but not quite. It is not the same kind of game as Final Fantasy Tactics - it isn't exactly like anything else I've ever played.

Why would NOA censor something on the Revolution that they didn't censor on the N64?

Oh god, that is the very worst way you could possibly ever describe the awesome game that is Ogre Battle 64 to someone that's never played it. Come on, sonarrat, you can do better than that.

it's a macro-SRPG. instead of micromanaging a small outfit of individual characters, you form units of up to 5 characters and deploy them in formations to march on towns, sieze them, and kill the enemies. and you have no direct control over your characters' attacks - they attack based upon position in the unit. it's actually a pretty deep game, because shifting your units' formation around can totally change the way you handle battles.

also, OB64 is pretty damn easy, at least in comparison to march of the black queen (the first ogre battle game, for SNES), but it's still a superior game IMO, because most of the original Ogre Battle's difficulty came from some really stupid limitations in the system on alignment and charisma, which are fixed in OB64.

I would say it's like advance wars but movement is real time. The battles play out like sort of like advance wars but more in the rpg fashion. You get to customize your group. Put whatever units you want in said group. Different characters/classes have different attacks depending on what equipment they have on them and where their placement is at on a 3 by 3. It's really a unique game. I don't seem to recall any single game resembling it. It's a mixed of a lot of things. Buy it and play it!

Just because you're biased against FFVII doesn't mean it isn't a valid comparison. It bears stating that OB64 is a zillion times deeper, of course, and even more epic in its storytelling.

I am?

Actually, I just thought it was a poor comparison because the only similarities between OB64 and the Fort Condor mini-game is the RTS-lite point-to-point movement interface which is also used in games like the Growlanser series. And that's only a pretty minor part of what makes OB64 what it is (you could take OB/OB64 off point-to-point and use gridded movement instead and the games would still retain an enormously unique feel) -- the unit management and how the actual battles are conducted are much more integral elements of the gameplay, along with the Chaos Frame/town liberation.

I love the ogre battle series, March of the Black Queen is one of my favorite games of all time. They really need to make a new one, I never owned an N64, so I never got a chance to play OB64 for long (I borrowed it and an N64 for a bit). I would like a new version either for the DS or the Revolution. It is a truly unique series! Did they release March of Black Queen for the PSX? Or was that an original game in the series?

March of the Black Queen (AKA Ogre Battle Saga Episode V) was originally released on the SNES. It then got ported to the PSX, with some slight upgrades, as Ogre Battle Limited.

And I definitely want new Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre games... and not any more spinoffs like The Knight of Lodis. I want to see the actual saga completed.

Actually, March of the Black Queen was first ported to the sega saturn and upgraded from the SNES game. THEN it was ported to the PSX about a year or two after the Saturn port..

And yes, we all want to see the saga completed. :(

OB64 was a relatively easy game, but somehow the cool characters & story made it worth playing.

I hate the tune from the 2nd stage :P

Really? I did not realize that. Thanks for the info.

Stupid fucking Sega. There were too many things on the Saturn (like the ports of Symphony of the Night, Suikoden, and Vandal-Hearts) that America never got.
