Oh My Goddess fans, the anime series worth a look?

Probably one of the few 90's anime/manga i never really gave a chance at all and was wondering if the anime series was worth a shot. I hear its a classic but i wanted Gaf's expert opinion on the series.

Wouldnt mind getting it on blu ray too or is it mostly on DVD?

Some eps were kinda funny, but there are far funnier shows out there. I recommend it if you're really into the harem/comedy combo.

The mini shorts was better and funnier. The first season of the anime is alright it gets a bit better in the second season. But nothing as good as the movie.

As a huge fan of the manga, I have to say the anime is just ok. Maybe it's because I started the series by watching the OVA/movie, but they are way better than the TV series in my opinion. The manga itself gets quite interesting, and while the art style is pretty bad in the beginning it turns amazing soon enough.

Try out the OVA, there's only 5 episodes. If it floats your boat watch the movie which has superb animation. Story-wise the movie has jumped ahead quite a bit, but if the combination of the OVAs/movie grab you I recommend then jumping into the manga.

Well... I started out with the anime TV series and liked it enough to start buying the manga.

It's not as funny or fast paced as other shows, but I like that about it.

It's only been released on DVD and I think S1 is somewhat expensive to get now.

Probably cheaper to get the movie and see if you like that first.

Its pretty dated, and I don't remember it being too significant at the time (although I remember Urd being hot).

A better classic harem would be Ranma 1/2. It becomes a little repetitive later on (what harem isn't), but it has the action and drama to keep one satisfied. I remember the dub work was pretty hilarious as well.

I fell in love with it via the movie, and ended up watching both seasons of the anime. To be honest, though, I don't remember enough about it to say whether or not I'd recommend it. I don't think anything about the series was terrible, but I can't really remember if there was anything that stood out as being particularly good, aside from the designs and animation.

I liked the manga when I first read it nearly 20 years ago. Reading it again in the rereleased form, as an adult, a lot of it doesn't hold up.

Ah! My Goddess (or Oh! My Goddess) is a very tame but charming series. It's one of the few anime/manga that you could likely share with the family without any risk of embarrassment.

I was a big fan back in my formative anime watching years, mostly because of the original OVA which, in my opinion, is somewhat better than the TV anime. Some of the characters, particularly Skuld and Urd are quite interesting and the way this universe works is also equally interesting. Basically, it's based on Norse mythology except that everything in heaven is technologically advanced. The Earth is run by a massive computer. Skuld, the goddess of the future, actually has a giant hammer that she uses to "debug" the system by literally squashing bugs that manifest in the form of cute rabbits with spider legs. You get the idea.

The more recent TV anime is more faithful to the original manga. It has great animation and character designs inspired from the movie. However, the show is also pretty boring with episodes where little of significance actually happens.

I have a very nostalgic love for Ah! My Goddess but in hindsight I think it's mostly just charming and forgettable. Belldandy, the main goddess in the series, is the poster child for boring waifu perfection characterization. She basically only cares about Keiichi, cooking, and cleaning the house. That's it. Even though she's the second main character she was by far my least favorite.

A similar series is You're Under Arrest also comes from the same author. It's about female cops and is equally tame where the most dangerous situations involve pulling over reckless drivers or saving kittens.
