OK, so Iron Maiden might be the best live band I've ever seen

jesus christ. dickinson had to be on speed or something. i mean, their stage set-up had 2 8 foot or so platforms on opposite sides of the stage, and he was jumping on and off them like it was nothing, multiple times per song. i mean, there were stairs to get up to them(obviously), but he took 2 or 3 at a time, running full speed.

plus, all they played was stuff off their first 4 albums:

Wrathchild
The Trooper
Phantom Of The Opera
Revelations
Run To The Hills
Hallowed Be Thy Name
The Number Of The Beast
Iron Maiden
Running Free
Sanctuary

first time i've seen them live, obviously. i was expecting a slower, more washed up set like the current Black Sabbath line-up plays....but christ, this was amazing.

If you have a chance to catch them anytime, ever, do it. Amazing what they're doing at their respective ages.

other notes from ozzfest:
killswitch engage is still really fucking good.
rob zombie is still the biggest badass in music. they came out without a setlist and asked the crowd what to play. they played some van halen and skynard, along with his classics(even white zombie stuff, wooooo).
as far as new, up and coming metal goes, Trivium is by far the best. absolutely flawless.
the haunted are great, but suck at connecting with the crowd
as i lay dying are so, so good live, even if you don't care for most of their stuff on cd(like i do)

that is all. go see fucking maiden.

I saw Maiden on the Seventh Son tour. It's nice to hear that they've still got it.

I'll try to catch them when they tour.

ya i was at the show last night

correction they opened with

the ides of march/murders in the rue morgue

i guess they dropped wrathchild from the set, i think murders is a better opener anyways

but ya maiden is awesome live, tons tons of energy, awesome interaction with the audience, they easily steal the show on the main stage

black sabbath must have a difficult time following them up every night

i hope the added exposure from ozzfest will help maiden tour the states next year when their new album drops, because for Dance of Death they only played NYC and LA in america, they need to add a Chicago date next time at the Aragon or something, that would kick all kinds of ass, i hate the tweeter center, rosemont, UC etc for concerts

other notes from ozzfest

like u mentioned, it was funny when zombie busted into hot for teacher and sweet home alabama for no reason before thunderkiss, and i was glad to hear some white zombie

They are awesome live, aren't they. I saw them in '98 or '99 at Roskilde Festival and they just blew me away. One of the best shows I've ever been to. Everyone should go see these guys play, even if you're not a big fan. They show you what live music is all about.

I saw them in 1987 on the Somewhere in Time tour. (Yngwie "the fury" Malmsteen opened. :lol )

I've always loved their music. If Ozzfest had decided to come to Cleveland this year, I'd have gone. Bastards.

Glad you enjoyed the concert. Last Maiden concert I attended was in 2000, with Halford at the Skydome in TO. Maiden still has it, awesome to hear. :)

ah, my mistake. i copied the setlist from somewhere else because i didn't remember all of it, and what i glanced at looked good =p

and yeah, fuck tweeter. the second stage is all sorts of cool, but the main stage sucks when you're on the lawn(like i usually am). seeing maiden play at the aragon or even at the UIC Pavilion(as long as you're on the floor) would be great.

i was in the lawn last night as well

how was the crowd response in your area/section?

in my section the crowd was pretty involved, singing along, chanting etc etc

was a good mix of age in the audience from the kiddies to the 40 year old mulleted dudes

Saw them in Montreal for the Dance of Death tour, they were amazing. The fans in Montreal and (particularly) Quebec city go absolutely NUTS for Maiden. I've never seen audiences go consistently crazy for a band like that (they have been coming here once a year since 2000 if I'm not mistaken).

Funny you're mentioning this as my sister is a huge X Japan fanatic, owning all the albums + concerts + side projects of the band (she even designed her own French/English Website dedicated to them). She was playing that non-stop when I lived at my parents' house. Personally, I'm not a big fan, but I love "Scars" and "X" among others.

While I'm not a fan of Iron Maiden, they did have a very impressive stage presence when they played at Ozzfest in NJ.

I'm sad to hear that Zombie came out with a set lest and let them pick what to play at your show. He didn't do that at ours, but he did demand that the firemen begin blasting us with water from the hose. He also ended with a Joe Walsh song.

I went for Zombie and Sabbath, and I was very happy with both.

edit:

Was Wicked Wyzdom at your show? They were fucking TERRIBLE. They got booed off the stage at ours.

well two of my friends are huge in flames fans, so they left after zombie played superbeast to get good seats on the lawn. we were in very center, about 20 feet from the bottom.
well, at least we were, until the pit for shadow's fall opened up right next to us and we had to move.
around me the people were most into mudvayne and maiden. everyone in front of me went absolutely nuts for maiden. they were very involved for sure.
and yeah, the audience range was hilarious. there were the metal kids, hardcore kids, the old men with mullets, and then there were also the normal looking dads who you just knew were only there for maiden and sabbath.

i have no complaints about zombie. he opened with superbeast, then went into living dead girl. but he played everything i wanted to hear. thunderkiss, dragula, more human than human. it was a blast.
i'm assuming he did the devil's rejects beach ball thing at your show too? :lol that was hilarious. i think he threw out like 8 balls that were bouncing around

and yes, wicked wisdom was there. i'm not sure how many boos they got, but i am certain that most of the crowd(including me) just left to go get water or something.

Yes, yes, he did the beach ball :)

Did they have the Devils Rejects booth at your location? I snagged 2 of everything there, and it stayed in suprisingly good condition (except for where it stuck together from the water from the fire hoses :( )

Yea, this year's Ozzfest was great. Iron Maiden and Trivium did rock.

The mosh-pitting got a tad bit out of control, as did the RAMPANT clumps of grass throwing :lol

Holy shit, it was raining down like hellfire!

Then the rain opened up from the heavens and I was totally drenched. It was a blast.

Best time I've had in Hartford in a very long score.

EDIT: Here's a few shots I took from my cellphone :) The rest really weren't work-safe...

It was about 100 degrees in NJ. There was no grass throwing to be had.

The moshing was out of control. Idiots moshing on a sloped hill and knocking everyone not in the mosh pit down.

Three morons behind me tried moshing to Iron Maiden, and they were grabbed by a bunch of true metal heads and told to "Cut that fucking shit out right now!" :lol

Another thing I remember with Zombie and the heat:

You can imagine how bad the area around the second stage smelled. BO was running rampant. Rob was like "You guys fucking stink. There's waves of BO coming up on stage. Ah, this yound lady in the front seems to think taking her top off will combat the odor. Perhaps she's right. (and he looks over at John 5) John 5 seems to think she's correct!"

AlphaSnake

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
=(

I am jealous. I'm listening to Maiden right now. God I love them.

fucking go, dude. going to concerts alone isn't as bad as you'd think. i've done it plenty of times. you feel a little stupid at first, but once the music starts it's all groovy. not like you can have a deep discussion while the music's on anyway.

It was about 100 degrees in NJ. There was no grass throwing to be had.

It was like 90 and sunny when I went, and there was PLENTY of grass/plastic cup/plastic cups filled with grass to make it heavier so it flies farther and hurts more/box/container throwing. Everything was fine until Mudvayne went on, then the place turned into a warzone.
Throwing shit once you get to the lawn is a tradition here now. This is my fifth Ozzfest in a row, and it's always one band on the main stage that starts it.
2001: Slipknot
2002: System of a Down (Drowning Pool's singer actually died that night. I saw his last performance ever, which is kinda sad/cool)
2003: Korn
2004: Slayer
2005: Mudvayne

Also, people did mosh to Maiden here. It was disgusting.
I was surprised how tame the moshing was at the second stage though. The worst it got is a tie between when As I Lay Dying played 94 Hours and when Superbeast started. It was absolute chaos. The whole crowd was a giant pit for about 30 seconds. Besides that, it wasn't nearly as bad the previous years.
Especially during Killswitch....I think they were the second stage crowd favorite, and there was a pit or two on the side somewhere, but the majority of the crowd just kinda chilled and sang along. The crowd alone sang almost all of The End of Heartache, which was one of the cooler concert experiences I've ever had. The whole time Killswitch's singer just the held the mic out toward us, shaking his head back and forth in disbelief like he was thinking "we're not this popular...what's going on here?" and he looked at the drummer who just laughed. IIRC they played 8 songs, and on all of them the crowd was drowning out the singer.

It was also cool to see how many people knew the lyrics to Trivium's set. They're so good, I'm glad they're getting noticed. I actually got their first EP like 3 years ago, and I loved it. One of the very, very few bands I actually knew when they were nothing but 18 year olds messing around. I just wish they woulda played some earlier stuff and not all songs from Ascendacy.

Culex, that first picture is fucking awesome.

Sorry for the novel. What can I say, I love talking about good shows =p

Nice. Was that at the Hartford concert? Because I was there. Real insane. Maybe I'll be able to see myself in one of your shots. I'll have to look. :D

I never heard of Trivium until I went to Ozzfest this year. I'm listening to their new album now and it's really really good. Goddamn, they were excellent live too. The lead singer has damn good crowd interaction . They've got a new fan.

Killswitch had the best pits ever though. I mean, people were getting uppercutted everywhere and their must have been 4 pits throughout the crowd whenever they started up a song. So great. :lol

Bob Zombie performed an amazing set (CAT SCRATCH FEVER!!!!) and I was happy to see John 5 (he kicks, man). He did the Devil's Rejects beach ball thing at this show too. O, and one more thing: LIVING DEAD GIRL. Hotdamn.

I wish I saw Velvet Revolver at my Hartford show, but they're not on the tour yet. Even though they're not Ozzfest material, the crowd was the best it's ever been this year and I think they would have "accepted" them...it would have been a blast.

MAIDEN!!! was INTENSE. I could not believe how much these guys ripped. They had the entire crowd standing up and rocking out, it was unseen.

Black Label Society played a short set, but they were great as usual. Zakk threw a bunch of his amps on the ground at the end of his set and shit. And he played "FIRE IT UP!" which was so awesome to see live. :D He also did a K-Rock interview while the second stage was still going on. One of the questions asked was "Would he play in Dimebag's place if Pantera asked him to? His response was "Of course. I love Dime, I'd be honored." Real sweet.

I missed In Flames. I'm so fucking pissed.

Mudvayne was better than I expected. I was never a fan, but their bassist really pulled the act together as far as I'm concerned. He was on fire.

But Black Sabbath was the real clincher. Tony and Ozzy performed their songs better than you could imagine, and everyone sang along. Tony did this real amazing guitar solo at the end of one of his songs, and I swear to you it was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard in my life. I don't remember what song he did it during, I was way too stoned. I wish I could hear it again, but I think it was one of those Ozzfest Exclusive solos... so unless I find a bootleg video of them playing at Ozzfest, I think I'm S.O.L. :(

Anyone else buy a BLS shirt? I don't like this year's Ozzfest shirts. The Ozzfest Demon sitting on the shitter with a cigar? Yah, I'd get more satisfaction if I gave that kind of money to a booze-hound hobo.

Oh, and the chick from Arch Enemy is pretty bangable, in that muscular-foreign-chick kinda way. o_O

But seriously, she's hot.

Yea, Hartford CT. Formerly the Meadows (I think it's called Dodge something or other now).

oh, arch enemy's singer is freakin' hot.

as far as shirts, i never buy any at the shows because they're way too expensive. if you're just buying a shirt for one band, you can get in off their website for $15 less.
