Okami looks amazing

Any impressions of it at TGS? I hardly see any talk about it, the TGS trailer blew me away and the art style is fantastic.

It does look amazing. My girlfriend was on the bed behind me, playing Nintendogs, as I watched that video. She looked up and couldn't take her eyes off it. It's the kind of game that just grabs your attention and I still don't know what the hell the gameplay is like. I just know I want it.

There's also a trailer at Capcom's Tokyo Game Show website which was posted here on GAF. It seems so far away...2006...We need a solid date Capcom!

Bah. I'm quite disappointed in this game is for PS2 only. Oh well. Guess I'll buy it and save it for the PS3 :/

Guys, I just played some work in progress version of this for about 20 minutes and it blew me away. Visually it is THE most gorgeous game I have ever played or seen, and now my most anticipated also, although.. is it getting a Western/English release? It seems the story/background plays a large part, I don't think I would enjoy it that much if I was guessing at the plotline.

Is there a good writeup somewhere describing exactly how the game engine works? I haven't been able to get a grasp of it... but yes it looks beautiful....

A European release was already confirmed, and I think it's no surprise this game is going to be released in the US too.

Your girl is on the bed and you were at your computer.

WTF?

;)

I played the demo, it fuckin rocks.

The game really looks amazing, and from what little I could gather, plays very nicely too... Even my friend who pretty much has given up on this generation lately couldn't help but completely fall for Okami's magic.

The demo I played was all in Japanese, so it was very difficult to figure out what was going on or what am I supposed to do, the visuals and art are utterly beautiful as you all know, and animation is so smooth, looking at the wolf walking slowly from the side is a sight to behold, he jumps really high and has a "wall jump" too which helps in reaching high cliffs, when you run he starts out slowly but after a while picks up speed, it feels great rushing through the vivid environments with all kinds of special flowery effects flying about from under his feet. There's a bark button (don't know what it's good for), and his idle animations are very cute (or when he shakes off water from his body after a dip in a pool)... There are many NPCs who you can talk and interact with, it seemed like each one asks you to do something for them but I have no way of knowing since it's in Japanese... The right analog stick rotates the free camera, and I think the square button is the primary attack (head charge) which allows you to attack enemies, open treasure chests, or break pots and jars for coins and other collectables... There are also many "special items" thrown about the landscape which bring up a text box when you pick them up and show you how many have you collected so far.

The drawing mechanics were hard to figure out at first, but after some practice and watching the demo play after the title screen, I managed to figure out many things you can do with the paint brush... Holding R1 at any time pauses the action and turns the screen into a monochrome drawing canvas, pressing/holding the square button here lowers the ink brush on the paper and you draw by moving the analog stick around... Release R1 to go back to gameplay and see the effect of your drawing on the actual game world... Drawing a straight line on any object performs a slice attack (it can break rocks, hit enemies/characters, and slice trees), drawing a circle around characters makes them fall in love with you for some reason, draw a circle in the sky and it becomes a sun illuminating the world, draw a circle on water and it becomes a lilly that you can step/rest on (very useful since you can't swim forever, there's a fatigue meter ala Wind Waker), and pushing ink dots in the night sky makes them stars... It takes a little getting used to at first cause your strokes have to be quite accurate to have any effect.

The demo had some technical shortcomings, framerate slowdowns occurred almost every time a box or pot was broken to reveal many coins, and there were occasions when objects would suddenly popup or disappear at certain angles (the waterfall comes to mind), I found some of those very distracting and really hurt the beauty of the game, I really hope all of them will be ironed out in the final release.

I'll be glad to answer any questions you have.

Naked Snake: I have only one question, how hard is it to draw ink? You say it takes getting used to, but is the analog stick good enough and stuff? Also, do you think this game would work well on the Revolution controller?

From what I've seen in E3 demo, the ink drawing system is extremely forgiving - you can be quite imprecise and it'll still 'understand' what you were trying to do. For example, when drawing constellations, you only had to draw something that looks relatively close to the target drawing, and it was pretty easy to do so.

It's not really hard, especially since I wasn't required to draw any complex shapes or anything, it's only lines, circles, and dots so far... To do a slice your line has to be perfectly straight for example (just hold the analog stick in any direction for a second or two then release), circles are the trickiest (the beginning and end has to meet or it wont register as a circle, and it has to look like a circle, an elipse or "tear shape" for example wont work), dots naturally are the easiest, just position the brush where you want to place a dot and press the square button once (for star constellations)... I can't recall having to draw anything else, oh there's one more I forgot to mention, in one instance you have to cross some strange looking water to reach land on the opposite side, scribling on the water here creates some sort of a "magical path" that you can swim in, otherwise you can't advance in that water, this is the easiest since you're not required to draw any specific shapes, just fill a path with ink and you're good to go.

It's not hard at all so far, but I guess it can become difficult/frustrating if the game asks you to draw more complex things, and you don't have unlimited ink, but releasing R1 and pushing it again refills your ink pot (and erases any previous drawing you had), so you can keep trying until you get it right, and there's no rush since the game is paused when you're drawing.

Revolution controller? I don't think the rev controller would add any substantial benefits to this game, and might even make drawing more difficult if the motion sensetivity is set too high (people with shaky hands would suffer).

Good. This is going to be an awesome game. :D Capcom. <3

Are you kidding? It's basically a 3D mouse, I think it would work absolutely perfect, it would make drawing so much easier and natural. I pray for an Okami sequel on Revolution.

I don't know, I can't imagine holding a "remote" in the traditional way (pointing at the screen) would be comfortable for drawing... If it were small enough to hold as a pen/pencil and positioned likewise (i.e with the tip pointing down as if you're drawing on a paper), then yeah I can definitely see the benifit... But not with the standard controller and pointing the tip at the screen.

It can be held like a pencil, I guess. You could see that in that Revolution promo video. Besides, it's a small remote, I think it would be great. Anyways, back ontopic.

Now that I thought more about it, yeah I can see it working with the rev controller, no need to hold it as a pencil even, just grip it as if it's a fat brush/broom.

*sigh*

Every time I read a post about Okami there are constant posts about how it should be on DS or Revolution or whatever. Its the same thing with Katamari Damacy and people saying "It should've been on a Nintendo console!".

I'm quite happy that Okami is on PS2, as at least it has a chance at commercial success. I also have the demo that I nabbed from TGS, and yes its pretty japanese heavy. I can't really figure out some of the missions! I know one is to draw the blossom back onto the withered dead look tree's, and the day to night mechanics are cool (you can draw a sun at any time to return the world to daytime!). Its one of my most anticipated games and its fantastic.

All I said was that the painting would be much better with the Revolution controller, and it would be easier and more precise. Okami is practically made for Revolution because of this.

I'd rather use the controller. Drawing lines with a remote doesn't seem intuitive to me, and might ruin the artistic feel.

Well I see no reason whatsoever for this not being on the GC. Offcourse it should also be released on the PS2 but the GC clearly has a fan base that's willing to buy cel-shaded games. LoZ:WW and Viewtiful Joe proved that.
