Okay NYC GAFers Recommend Me A Cell Phone Carrier

I'm sorry to ask this again, since I know I asked this before a whiles back, but much time has passed, so...

I currently use Sprint. They are shit. I am no longer under contract and want to jump ship. Question, who do I go with?

For a variety of reasons, Verizon is out of the question (I'll explain later if anyone cares), so it's down to either T-Mobile or Cingular. Which is the best in the city? As well as Jersey (my gf lives there).

Is Sprint really #2? Well the coverage ain't that bad, but they're a rip-off pricewise and the customer service is a joke.

When I was there for a couple of days, the reception on my tmobile phone was ass.
My friends with Verizon had a great reception though.

yeah, the only reason they get customers is because anybody who gets turned down by other providers can get a sprint phone...

If not Verizon, then you're fucked in this city. :(

Probably Cingular is your next best bet. If it's good enough for Angie Martinez...:p

Verizon has the best service, but (IMO) the worst phone selection. I'm on Cingular now and the service is just "OK." Lots of dropped calls, but I've alleviated that with MNS (manual network selection). I just hop on T-Mobile's network whenever I get into an area with spotty service.

Hey fort, care to explain why verizon is out of the question. Is it because of the crappy phones?

I design cell phone games and they run in J2ME... Verizon uses Brew, which we don't support right now. So not only do I need a phone, but a test device.

This is true. Everyone who's poor and has poor credit had Spint.

Cough * cough * like me * cough

This is all you really need to know..

Sprint sucks bad
Tmobile is in the middle and is affordable
Nextel is too expensive
and Verizon is the best tho expensive as well (tho i think its not as expensive as nextel)

go with verizon....if you cant afford verizon, then Tmobile...

but Verizon is known to be the best in quality of reception and coverage...etc.

<edit> just saw you wont go with verizon altho it is really the best you can get....

Tell you what: I'll sell you my T-Mobile phone and pay the bill for 5 months, until my contract expires, for $100. It's 300 minutes/mo, free weekends, free long distance, no roaming charges. (The bill is $30 plus tax for me, assuming you don't use text messaging or AIM, or call overseas.) I'd rather do this than pay the $200 fee to cancel my service.

Seeing as how my Verizon contract expires in November - September if I decide to stay with them - I'll be shopping around as well, and by "shopping around," I mean "examining Cingular very carefully."

Unless something's changed in the past month with Cingular, they should give you an approximate 30 day trial of the service before you're bound to the contract. Not going with Verizon doesn't magically mean you'll have shitty service, though. Even they have plenty of blatant (and annoying) dead spots in the city.

Yikes, if that's not an ardent "don't go with T-Mobile!" gesture, I don't know what is!

I'm actually eyeing Cingular at this point. I hear they've gotten really good over the past few months.

and hey, you forgot Nextel!

Even Nextel is trying to forget Nextel. They were pretty much begging to be bought, and now that it's happened the iDEN deathwatch can begin. PTT may exist in some form over existing CDMA/GSM networks down the line, but those obnoxious chirps will oh-so-thankfully be nothing more than a fleeting memory in a couple of years.

The only reason to go with Cingular is here:

If you don't see a phone in that list that you really like, then you better just go with Verizon as their service is the best around here.

I found my phone, though :)

for what it's worth cingular has kicked some serious ass since the merger.

in milwaukee regularly my house is the death trap for cell service. t-mobile, verizon, and print ALL drop calls in my house regularly.. I mean like probably a 33-50% chance.. on long calls it is more like a 75% chance. no matter the phone or the provider calls will drop. cingular though on mine and my wife's 6620s in the past month there has been like 3 dropped calls.. now while that sounds like a lot consider a) what I just told you about other providers and phones and b) these are our primary phones. we ditched our landline for these. So out of probably hundreds of calls we dropped like three so far.

and we just went to disney world and my mom's cell ALWAYS roamed out of service (sprintpcs). ridiculous (and her phone beeps when it searches for signal so the thing was going off constantly). Mine and my wife's on the other hand always had full or almost full bars. and I am assuming orlando has EDGE service so I was uploading pictures from my phone in under 10 seconds... very nice..

anyway, I don't have a lot to say on billing or customer service at this point.. just that their actual coverage for me has kicked every other providers' ass up and down. my experience at least.

Definitely Verizon. I used to have AT&T wireless (worst), changed to T-Mobile (better, but still not good). I have friends who would get full reception in his BKLN home with his Verizon, yet I don't get a shit signal on my phone.

I'm definitely changing to Verizon next time.
