Old DS blues

I dug out my original model DS recently in honor of it being almost 20 years since I got and the screens are all messed up, would replacing the battery fix it or is this just because it hadn't been used in probably 16 years?

i suggest buy new rather than fixing, that old friend might hard to repair now than ever since it's 20 years old
but i can understand if You rather fix it than buy new

Guys, don't keep inflated batteries at your home. They can cause fire. Old af handheld systems and phones often have inflated batteries. Just buy a new battery and throw that shitty inflated battery away.

I am once again asking if just replacing the battery will do anything, hard to justify buying one unless I have some idea
I profoundly doubt it, but if you feel it's worth a shot then at least you can rule it being a battery issue out entirely. Then perhaps this thread can be useful for posterity.
If I were you I certainly wouldn't throw it out, as original DS models aren't so common anymore and I think it'd be neat to keep as a part of a gaming room display.
Get a DSi.
This would be my advice as well. I have a 2009 DSi that is still going strong with great battery life to boot. The sleek profile, matte finish and larger screens than DS Lite make it a sublime machine for playing DS games. It lacks GBA support but I don't fault it for that, as I have an SP and don't play any early DS games that used the slot.
It can even be jailbroken to take advantage of the much faster CPU in the DSi for significant performance enhancements.

Get a New 3DS XL in pristine consition (imported from Japan if you have to) and you'll be able to cover all DS, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance and 3DS games with just one handheld.

Oh, it looks cool, that and the sentimental value ensures I would never get rid of it, but it's a shame if I can no longer play it.

Back in the summer I dug out my original model PSP, which hadn't been used since 2008 or 2009, but while it needed a battery change, it works like a charm otherwise, shame the same can't be said for the DS, I don't know if this is build quality or what.

Nintendium has failed you. lol
Probably just a hardware issue with it being the first DS iteration.
Meanwhile I have a grey brick Game Boy from 1989 that still works (last time I checked anyway…)
Your Gameboy can probably withstand a rainstorm as well. Old technic is more robust in general, there's always less components that can fail.
