On the whole, which do you think has better artwork?

Speevy, be a uniter not a divider.

That said, I don't know which is better. I do know that I am repulsed by anime character design, though I do like the environments in some of those games.

I think the best japanese RPGs have the best artwork around. FFXII should be the endall example. It's not overly anime... hell, it isn't anime at all. It just looks fucking great.

Sadly, it's no contest. We have capabale western artists, it's just the people who make the games have no taste and end up chosing shitty artists.

Generally speaking.

Japanese RPGs, in general, though sometimes the designs, as nice as they look, lack cohesiveness. In other words, there isn't a distinct attempt to make disparate styles all seem like they're part of the same world. It needs to be more consistent.

I'm definitely more partial to pc adventure games. The artwork in japanese rpgs lately have turned me off them for good.

People are entitled to their opinions, but at least give examples and make comparisons. Don't just be a smartass.

edit: Just noticed your clarification of 'Western adventure'. In which case I'll respond with "thats a stupid comparison and both are very different game styles"

If forced at forkpoint to choose, I'd go with the JRPGs simply because most adventure games remind me of lores static graphics on the old PCs (see your thread for info), and technology has moved on so much its unreal. Plus I was never a huge fan of randomly moving my mouse all over the screen waiting for it to change shape (although perhaps more enjoyable than seeing if I can move 15 nanometres without encountering a random battle)

It would be interesting to see what western adventures would come up with nowadays. Or perhaps a Japanese slant on the idea?

I suppose if I cared enough i'd post more.

I'm so goddamn lost right now.

PC Adventure games. Where does Blizzard come in?

It's definitely an odd comparison, though.

I don't know. Loom is one of the best looking games of all time.

Many of LucasArts' adventure games had gorgeous art, really. The quality is easily on par, I suppose, but the settings are too different for me to really get the comparison.

Tain beat me to it especially with the Loom examples. Although i prefer Japanese art overall (especially concept sketches), i think much of the western PC art of old is artistically on par with much of the Japanese art. Western art with limited palettes seems to trump much of what we put out now in this age of polys.

You know, I'd say back in the old days, adventure games were the shit, graphically. While RPGs used primitive (although charming) tile based graphics. Kings Quest V, which I believe was the first 256 color VGA game, or Mixed Up Mother Goose, when did they come out? Like 1989 or so? Looked much better than any RPG at the time, even Phantasy Star. Nowadays, the adventure genre is on life support and has been for a while, while RPGs are healthy as ever...

I remember absolutely loving some adventure games graphics back in the early days of 256 color VGA - Mixed Up Mother Goose, Kings Quest 5 and 6, Loom (Remember being really impressed with this), all looked really nice. While, Japanese RPGs still used tile based graphics and SD 8x8 sprites (Final Fantasy IV time period). Unfortunately, after Myst, the adventures seemed to go in the way of photorealism and eventual blandness. Although, I really liked Myst's graphics. Plus, some of the adventure games with the more animated/cartoony style (Kings Quest VII, a lot of the big Lucasarts games) looked great and still hold up if you don't mind the low resolution.

I think the first RPG that really impressed me graphically, aside from some cool monster designs in FF4 and 5, was FF6. The Phantom Forest just blew me away the first time I saw it, you know, the pond... Then, a lot of late SNES RPGs featured excellent graphics (Seiken Densetsu 3, Chrono Trigger, TOP, and Star Ocean)... but PSX is when the whole surreal worlds and beautiful artwork took off in RPGs - the FFs, SaGa Frontier 2, Legend of Mana.

I'm gonna concede a truce - both genres have had their share of memorable graphics and settings.

Instead of making retarded sweeping generalizations, why not judge the artistic merits of each individual game and not the country it originated from.

Oh, you meant like, Western point and click adventures. In that case, I'd be hard pressed to make a choice. There was so much good art in those games. All the LucasArts stuff, Beneath a Steel Sky, the Delphine games and so on. Guess I'd still go with Japanese RPGs simply because there's so much more 'evidence'.

I don't know why you're comparing 2 very specific genres.
Let's take out 'PC'...

I think non-Eastern developers should try tackling some JRPGs.

For example, the upcoming...

On the whole japanese, but with games like Sam and Max and Full throttle there are few that compare.

I'm going to go with Western adventure style art. Just because it's more varied; seems to have more personality to it.

It really depends on the game/company. I loved the artstyle of Chrono Cross, however I also loved the artstyle of Planescape Torment. I think Ico is quite striking, however, I find the artwork in the myst games to be equally impressive.

good Japanese concept arts and in-game art

Golden Age of PC gaming in both concept and in-game art

some good modern era Western concept arts but bad in-game art
