Happy days

Its only for today btw.

Opera's good to have around. It's very standards focused and it's like FireFox with a lot of extensions already installed. Still not big on the UI, but it's largely customizable and manageable. Really, the only thing stopping me from using it more often is that Safari 2.0's quite solid (sans those pesky memory leaks) and that they charge for the thing.

I registered if by any chance I decide to use Opera. I've used it before and it's nice. Firefox works just fine though and well, I don't feel like switching at the moment.

I already have Opera installed myself, I just hardly use it, but decided to register it anyawys after reading Slashdot. :D Not much of a difference though, the ads were already small. Maybe I'll use it a little more often now, who knows.

Can I just download it today and save it til another day/another pc or do I to download and install it on the PC I want to use it on today to take advantage of the no ads deal?

Yeah, just get the reg code today.

You want it to make Opera even faster? Try this:

Tools > Preferences > Advanced. Then look on the right hand side for "Loading" and use the dropdown box to set it to "Redraw instantly". One other thing that helps with quicker name resolution: Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Network (from the sidebar) > Server Name completion. Make sure the "Look for network machine" is unchecked and "Try name completion" is checked off with Prefix set to www, and suffix to .com.

What does Opera offer over Firefox?
Opera offers more out of the box, is a tad faster, and more compliant with web standards than Firefox. OTOH, Firefox is a lighter browser and more customizable. i'm a Firefox user, but i like Opera too. :)

Cool! Thanks for the heads up!

I've been using Opera for half a year now and like it better than IE and Firefox. It's fast, tabbed and reliable.

How do I do that without installing it? www.opera.com seems to be down... unsurprisingly.

Thats right. Its also faster, much more secure, feature rich and stable than Firefox. :) Opera tend to do most of the innovating.

Ok I've already downloaded it... so if I install it on a PC I can get the registration key then uninstall it and save it for later?

I'm using the latest version now and it's actually not bad. Is there something like mozilla's adblock for this?

Tried Firefox for a while and couldn't be bothered searching for all the extensions to make it comparable to Opera. I especially like the ability to tile or cascade windows in Opera, as well as the notes panel and hell, all of the panels. Works out great on my widescreen display.

I've always liked Opera more than Mozilla -- I've really tried to like Mozilla, but I never could. Opera just does more out of the "box"... I love the way it handles "pages" (internal windows), default shortcuts, lots of easy to use options (render with no images by clicking a button, render as a text browser, scale entire page down, etc. etc. etc.) and the ability to customize the entire interface quickly and easily.

Edit: Note... for adblocking, one fun thing to do is run PeerGuardian with just the Ad list on the block file, and set it to block HTTP. :)

Opera wins, if you don't like messing around with extensions.

It does most everything a browser should do. The only issues with it are more issues with the internet itself, which favors IE as its standard browser of choice... and thus screws everyone else when it comes to proper formatting.

GAF works a treat though.

small tip for opera users: right click and mouse wheel lets you scroll/select through all the tabs.

And learn mouse gestures... they fucking ROCK!! F8 is what F6 does in IE (go to the adress bar) and CTRL+D Learn if and love it! (it's paste (CTRL+V) with an automatic enter)

Firefox users, keep in mind that CTRL+N is a new tab, instead of CTRL+T. And remember though, that once you go Opera, no other browser can satisfy you anymore...

...Hmm, that sounds weird

Yeah I am definately digging Opera. I have only one big concern. In FireFox I could just middle mouse button/click in mouse wheel to open a bookmark in a new tab. I've figured out that if I hold shift and click on the bookmark it will open in a new tab, but I'd rather not add an extra key stroke by switching browsers. Anyone know a nifty short cut that will do that?

Another thing is make Opera your default email client. It rocks. You can do a every 5 minute check while you browse the internet and receive emails as they are sent :)

Email can be accessed once your account is set. Just click on the left bar to pop it out and click email. Unobtrusive yet powerful. Leagues ahead of Thunderbird and has all the gmail features.

modify it in preferences. You can also create new ones.

I also recommend afew skins from here.

http://my.opera.com/community/customize/skins/index.pl?search=&cat=&show=pop&perscreen=20

Some great ones like blue button, oxid, vista, metal blue, Mamouna etc.

Does Opera have a save session option like the FireFox extension? I've never used it, but I'll make the switch if it does.

Another awesome feature in Opera is user mode. If your going to do some heavy reading online just select View>Style>User mode (you can even add it as a button for ease of use, I prefer this in fact) and then check accesibility layout and high contrast (w/b).

Whatever you're reading will now have large white text on a black background, your eyeballs will be most appreciative.

EDIT: YES there is a session function, as well as a restart from last time incase your computer crashes it will reload your last autosaved session.

Thats what I had set, and it works for links on a web page, or stand alone links in the bookmark bar. However, it does not work for bookmarks nested inside a folder. This isn't such a big problem at home, but at work I have a ton of links bookmarked to make my job a bit easier. Any suggestions for that?

Yeah edit it.

I am too lazy to do a screengrab :P Its there however where you can get drop down menus on what you can do with a specific button or gesture.

shift click enter

i really, really want to love Opera, but the lack of a 'proper' ad-removal device is killing my oh-so-precious love.

Breeze Simplified Micro v4.15 - but I'm also using a minimalist skin on Windows (SkyLine) - both edited to my likings :)

And Red Mercury, it always does that for me (opening multiple bookmarks nested into a folder) - It even asks me when I want to open them if ther are more than 4 in there. No idea what I did to make that happen though

A few months ago when i gave Opera a good try, i ran across a page detailing how to exclude sites from loading in Opera. i think the downside was that you can't use wildcards. Google should have an answer.
