find it.

It's so fucking opeth. it's so fucking new.

why am i in love with opeth so much? because opeth doesn't hurt me. opeth loves me.

I'm listening to it right now. I've never listend to Opeth before, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's pretty good so far, but damn, why do bands have to "growl"? It just makes it sound worse. In this case, it's not so bad, but some bands just totally ruin their music with the growling.

that's opeth's style. if you want opeth without growling, listen to damnation.

Re-read this post in a month. I think the answer will have hit you by then, if you stick with the music. :)

hrrm I listened to the album on the way home from work... not what i was hoping for. It seems more like Damnation 1.5 than a new opeth album. With exception to Ghosts of Perdition, Baying of the Hounds, and The Grand Conjuration, i didnt hear much heavyness... im going to listen to this a couple more times to let it sink in.

Upon first listen, I'd say this is Opeth's worst album. Extremely inconsistent, and lacks the punch of previous works. It feels like the leftovers from Blackwater Park and Damnation.

I'm loving it too, bought this alone with Porcupine Tree - Deadwing best purchase i made in a long fucking time Deadwing is fucking amazing Porcupine Tree the hottest shit in music right now.

I've listened to it about five times today, and it's great. This is still very much the Opeth that came into being around the Still Life/Blackwater Park era, but with markedly more prog rock influence. I don't recall ever hearing this much keyboard work on an Opeth record before.

Anyone else think the riff that comes in at 9:44 on "The Baying of the Hounds" is bloody brilliant?

YES, FINALLY ANOTHER PERSON WHO LIKES PT. Deadwing is fucking album of the year for sure. After a few more listens to the Opeth album I am enjoying it more, The Grand Conjuration really sticks out for me, fucking great stuff. Anyways if you guys like Opeth I suggest checking out Porcupine Tree, its not as heavy, it's hard to explain, but it's great, I've introduced 3 people to PT and they all are nuts for it now.

fucking hell, I thought I was the only one that liked PT on this boards. Someone should make a PT appreciaton thread, the band is fucking amazing more people need to hear this shit because it seriously rock

Ive got the whole PT collection, and have seen them a few times, Ive suggested them in music threads for years here now, not like anyone listens in those though.

Opeth and Steve Wilson's music share alot in common. I dont know if thats due to Wilsons production of BWP and Deliverance / Damnation, or if he was influenced by them, Id say both. "In Absentia" is one of the greatest albums ever made in my opinion, and the song "Blackest Eyes" has always had an Opeth riff to me.

Anyways back to Ghost Reveries, This is certainly Opeth's best work to date for me.

also on top of it, liking it

and i also approve of porcupine. to me they're the perfect band to slot inbetween Opeth and Anathema.

I went and checked out PT after Damnation was released. I'm really, really glad I did. I still need to check out Deadwing though.

Porcupine Tree are great. Shame I missed my chance to see them live. It's pretty well-documented that Mikael Akerfeldt is a big PT fan. He did some vocal harmonies on their last album.

Ghost Reveries is still rokken, btw. My only real gripe is that the outro to "Reverie/Harlequin Forest" overstays its welcome just a tad, but it could grow on me with time.
