Oprah Winfrey Gives Cars to Audience
Sep 13, 12:36 PM (ET)

(AP) Talk show host Oprah Winfrey sits atop a Pontiac G6 outside her Chicago studios Monday, Sept. 13,...

CHICAGO (AP) - Talk show host Oprah Winfrey celebrated the premiere of her 19th season Monday by surprising each of her 276 audience members with a new car.

"We're calling this our wildest dream season, because this year on the Oprah show, no dream is too wild, no surprise too impossible to pull off," Winfrey said.

Making sure the audience was kept in suspense, Winfrey opened the show by calling 11 audience members onto the stage. She gave each of them a car - a Pontiac G6.

She then had gift boxes distributed to the rest of the audience and said one of the boxes contained keys to a twelfth car. But when the audience members opened the boxes, each had a set of keys.

"Everybody gets a car! Everybody gets a car! Everybody gets a car!" Winfrey yelled as she jumped up and down on the stage.

The audience members screamed, cried and hugged each other - then followed Winfrey out to the parking lot of her Harpo Studios to see their Pontiacs, all decorated with giant red bows.

One woman stepped up onto the frame of a driver's side door, put her head on the roof and hugged the vehicle.

Winfrey said the audience members were chosen because their friends or family had written to the show about their need for a new car. One woman's young son said she drove a car that "looks like she got into a gunfight"; another couple had almost 400,000 miles on their two vehicles.

In other segments on the show, Winfrey surprised a 20-year-old girl who had spent years in foster care and homeless shelters with a four-year college scholarship, a makeover and $10,000 in clothes. And a family with eight foster children who were going to be kicked out of the house they were renting were given $130,000 to buy and repair the home.

"The Oprah Winfrey Show," which debuted in 1986, is syndicated to 212 domestic markets and 109 countries.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
She gave them all G6's?

She didn't do them any favors...

How long before one of these puppies ends up on eBay?

Grizzlyjin

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
I would be her personal boy toy for a car, no joke.

Anyone see the SNL skit where Oprah kept giving out free stuff that was whipping the audience into a frenzy? The women start cheering, then crying, then making out, rioting, humping eachother, throwing chairs and having thier heads blow off. So fricking hilarious.

That skit was absolutely, side splittingly hilarious. The show has fallen into a scary pattern of nothing but free stuff to excite the audience and get media coverage. Good for the people winning...but boring as hell when it's all she does.

The skit though...just awesome. "A TURKEY!" She actually did give her audience turkey.

There were a couple of guys there; I saw the first half of this episode. One of the first 11 people to get a car was a guy.

And you know the only reason for me to watch this today was to see how Oprah acted man it was a good episode. I think its time to write miss Oprah a letter about my disabled mother and her many handicaps in life. Then maybe i could get that DLP screen i've been wanting for all these years =P

Watched the Highlights on ET just now. Nice to see that the Cars were given to people deserving of them. The amount of things she gives away is pretty obscene man...esp on this annual episode called ' Oprah's Favourite Things'. I would kill to be on that episode

The part with the homeless 20year old and the foster parents were really touching. She gets a 4 year scholarship plus room&board to the college of her choice, and the foster mom, $100,000 to buy her house so they don't have to move out, plus $30,000 to renovate, and i saw a few Samsung DLP HDTVs as well(courtesy of Best Buy)...and yeah, her "Oprah's favorite things..." episode is a great one to cash in on. She had 2 before, one for fall and one for spring I think.

One thing I hate about The Oprah Winfrey show is the crazy audience. They cheer and scream at the slightest thing. But you've got to love the woman though. She often honours and rewards selfless people... and that to me is the best thing about this show

Good to see that they all needed cars.

That Pontiac G6 is a nice looking car. Who could turn that down? No doubt Pontiac got a lot of publicity from this. To think I used to think they were talking about a Canon camera whenever 'the new G6' commercial was on tv. LOL.

Two thumbs way up for Oprah. She's a class act. :D

Local radio here in Chicago says those cars cost Pontiac 7 million.

But that pales in comparison to advertising your new car on the Oprah show.

Says something about Oprah's bank when giving the entire audience loaded new vehicles is not the focus of the whole show.

Someone needs to capture this and upload it so I can see the audience reaction to this, starting with only the six coming up and then the final reveal. Sounds like it was cool, and I don't get to watch Oprah at all because I'm at work.

Wow she is truly a great person. It really shows a lot about her character that she would freelly give away so much stuff instead of hoarding her wealth like so many digustingly well off people do.

Yeah, I thought it was nice Pontiac donated the cars too.. but seriously, she does actually give away a lot (unless it's always donations from sponsors??).

No, she does give away stuff from her personal wealth, as well as, like in this case, via "connections" as she noted in an interview. Her staff gets tons of stuff, expensive luggage, clothing, vacations, etc. And that American Idol-esque singing competition she had, all of the proceeds from the albums when directly to the singers, she didn't pocket a dime.

If it's a Pontiac, I'd give it back.

:lol

"Pontiac...we build excrement!"

Seriously, good for Pontiac and good for Oprah...saw that video only a couple of times, but it was hilarious.

This brings up a neat little idea into my head...

I wonder if I got tickets to a year's worth of Oprah tapings if I could get enough stuff to provide a livable income.

And the amazing thing is, she'll just continue to have her show go on with high ratings and interest as long as she keeps giving things away. It really doesn't set her back much and she of course gets a lot of it back, I'm sure anyways.

But most of us are stuck with a $99-$199 operating system as our freebie.

oprah is one of the most generous celebrities out there. 10% of all her income goes to charities and she treats every single one of employees like gold.

I kind of wish she'd run for president. I really can't imagine anyone beating her.
