OS X Yosemite [OT]

The Real Abed

Is it possible the final public beta wasn't that different from the final release? I mean if this pretty much the same maybe it only updates what it needed to.

I'm not familiar with the beta, and this kind of thing is exactly why I don't participate in them. It's not worth the hassle.

I used to used program called time tracker (software in alpha, ironically lol) made by pacifist dev, that looks at your time machine backups and figures out the delta files - the actual files that were replaced in each backup. I'd use this to see what actually gets changed each back up. Haven't used it in a while though. For a whilentbwasnt giving the deltas properly.
It's possible. But the update was like a gigabyte. Which is like a quarter of the entire OS update when brand new compressed. Surely it would have taken time to put the files in place. Plus forcing a shutdown would have screwed something up. But maybe it didn't need a real log out and move into place update. I guess it could have put the files in place when App Store was finished downloading them right before it attempted to reboot and it could have been finalized at startup. Though it'd be much different from every other update I've seen so far. But would explain it if PB3 was pretty much the finished product.

Safari insists on showing a site from my iPad (iCloud tabs) which I read (and closed) yesterday. I can close it on my Mac, but the next time iCloud syncs, it shows up again.

I'm using the iPad right now. I've opened and closed several tabs in order to force an update, but it just doesn't work. The only tab I can ever see on my Mac is that one from yesterday.
The other direction (Mac tabs showing up on the iPad) works fine.

Fucking iCloud.

The final Public Beta was Build 14D130a. The final release was Build 14D131. And also a huge difference in download size.

I've also noticed different functionality in Photos between the two Builds.

On final Public Beta when importing photos off my iPhone Camera Roll onto the Mac, I was asked if I wanted those same photos deleted from my iPhone after import.

Final Release doesn't have that option and just leaves the photos on the iPhone Camera Roll without prompting.

I got all my Safari syncing between my Mac, iPhone and iPad and it seems to be working fine, It always has.

On safari on my Mac I have it set to open with a new window, open new windows with an Empty Page, open new tabs with an Empty Page.

Woah, by accident I discovered this apparently new feature in 10.10.3 (picture is from Reddit):
jDu7cqU.png

A three finger tap on a link opens a preview window of the link and you can scroll around on the page. With a click into the preview window, it takes you to the page in a new tab. Very neat.

Yeah, saw this too. Too bad I'm already using triple tap as the mousewheel click (= open link in background).

I'd rather use triple click for link QuickLook, but apparently that's not an option.

I wonder if you can disable the trackpad shortcut on the System Preferences and then manually add on BetterTouchTool a trackpad shortcut for Cmd + Ctrl + D. It's worth a try!

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
How do I stop Photos form opening up every time I plug in my phone to my computer? I don't want to use it.

My photo collection is not ordered. It's not completely random either. Most of the pictures are in order, but a huge bunch of them are all over the place. For instance, there's several from March 30th, then one from April 9th, then April 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on.
Same shit on my phone. But for some reason, they're in different places on my phone.

I am so tired of this shit.

Yeah it really sucks. I sync one album from aperture to my phone and photos will clearly have a date but be put in the wrong place.

I actually love automatic sorting but for something as serious for me as photos I also need the control should I require.

I'm fairly upset that there isn't an equivalent aperture replacement, so I'm still having a serious think.

While the phone is plugged into the Mac, Open Photos.

Click on your phone in the sidebar (enable the sidebar in the 'View' option)

Uncheck 'Open Photos for this device' in the top right corner under the minimise buttons.

When I'm in an album on Photos, in the View option I have a 'Keep Sorted By Date' option that has a tick (✔️) next to it. Do you have that?

I do. And the order appears to be correct within albums.

If I'm not missing anything, the only place where the photos are in incorrect order is the predefined "All Photos" album (= Camera Roll). For this album, the option in the View menu is "Keep sorted by Date Added" instead, but it's disabled (grayed out).

Ahah!! I see what you mean. Yes in the All Photos section the photos are not in Date Taken order.

In February I imported a photo taken last Summertime and the photo appears among my February 2015 photos in the All Photos section.

This leads me to believe that the All Photos section is sorted by Date of Import into the Photos Library rather than the date the actual photo was taken.

Trying to find a workaround, I just created a Smart Album which matches all photos. Didn't work. The order was different, but still incorrect. So I deleted it again.
And guess what? Now the order of the All Photos album has changed!

April 6th, March 31st, April 6th, April 5th, April 2nd, April 5th, March 31st, March 30st, April 6th, ...

Jesus fucking Christ. Idiots.

I was referring to iOS.

Just pointing out that the order photos show can be all over the place. For example in my faves albums I think they're showing in order of file name.

There's inconsistency and no user control.

Hey guys, any recommendations for a Photo Library/Viewer similar to Picasa/Photos.

I have all my photos (close to 100 GB) on a NAS so l'd like one that can work with my existing library/folders. I use Picasa at the moment but l've found it to be VERY unreliable on OSX over the network. The library completely disappears sometimes and needs to rescan. The scan process misses photos too.

I don't need editing capabilities. Just to be able to view and possibly group the photos.

I'm just successfully using the new Photos app that comes as part of Yosemite 10.10.3.

I've got 80GB worth of pics and videos and use it as a photo browser and for very light editing. All my pics and videos are stored in Albums that I've organised.

I migrated to the new Photos app after using iPhoto and Aperture previously. My 80GB worth are stored on the internal HDD of my iMac and I manually back up the Photos Library file once a month (I was on the Yosemite Beta).

Seems to work fine for me.

Some great questions answered here: http://www.imore.com/photos-os-x-faq

But unfortunately it doesn't answer the question you have about if you can run Photos app on an external library located on a different drive.

Have a read of https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204655 from the Apple site.

Apple site said:
Using iPhoto and Aperture after you migrate to Photos
iPhoto — and Aperture, if you downloaded it — remains on your system in the Applications folder, and you can continue to use it. If you open iPhoto or Aperture after you upgrade to Photos, you’ll be asked if you want to open your library there or in Photos.
Any changes or edits you make in iPhoto or Aperture aren't reflected in Photos. And any changes or edits you make in Photos will not be reflected in iPhoto or Aperture.

I believe that if you have no intention of using it anymore, and your iPhoto & Aperture library are successfully migrated across to Photos, then you can happily delete iPhoto, Aperture, your iPhoto library and your Aperture Library.

Good stuff. Thanks. Still adjusting to these Mac file structures.

Having a annoying issue with Photos uploading to icloud photo library. The upload starts and then resets when it's about done. Log says:

4/12/15 8:36:22.371 PM cloudphotosd[426]: Reset Sync Requested! Reason: Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=13 "Permission denied" UserInfo=0x7fa993f7fab0 {NSURL=file:///Users/user/Pictures/Photos%20Library.photoslibrary/private/com.apple.cloudphotosd/CloudSync.noindex/Engine/filecache/Aam/cplAamjATeQqJePb1WplPuvGR7Df+ce.jpeg, NSLocalizedDescription=Permission denied}

Same file name each time. I've tried repairing permissions and repairing the Photos library but it keeps doing it :/

"Get your shit together"

This has been much discussed on this and other forums.

What's hilarious is that a "Snow Leopard"-type rewrite that everyone is asking for would actually result in an incredibly buggy release, rather than a stable one at launch. As often mentioned, Snow Leopard suffered from instability and extreme graphical performance issues until 10.6.5, a year into the release.

No, Apple actually knows what they're doing with these public betas and pre-release versions. That's the solution, here. Yosemite is going to be much more stable and performant than it otherwise would have been by the end of its life thanks to the betas. iOS 8 for that matter as well.

The new Intel graphics drivers that should be included in 10.10.4/10.10.5 will likely greatly improve performance, too.

ZFS, fixed Get Info/Inspector stuff, Siri, iTunes unbundling, WindowServer performance improvements. Yep yep yep.

For real. Certain stuff (WindowServer, HFS+, iTunes, probably the Finder again lol) needs some serious updating, but plenty of the OS underpinnings don't really need a ground-up rewrite anyway.

Ok so another question that I've been trying to work out since a got a Mac; I'd like to have a common photo library between mine and my wife's user accounts. It is as easy as sharing her Photos master library file, then importing it into my Photos? Will they remain connected as either one of us dumps photos into them?

I think you'd want to move the Photos library to a shared folder where you both have access. You may not be able to have Photos open at the same time under both accounts.

I think ZFS (or whatever off-brand alternative you make) is on my wishlist at the top, although I can't see a world in which Apple would straight drop HFS+ and go ZFS default in its first iteration. File systems are a huge deal. But considering how dangerous bit rot is to pretty much everything we hold dear, I hope it's coming sooner rather than later.

The new Intel graphics drivers that should be included in 10.10.4/10.10.5 will likely greatly improve performance, too.
Got a link that talks about this? Interested to hear more.

Intel released a major GPU driver update a month or so ago that should make it into Macs in the next couple of updates. Search along those lines. It was the same update that fixed Chrome performance on Windows.

Having a annoying issue with Photos uploading to icloud photo library. The upload starts and then resets when it's about done. Log says:

4/12/15 8:36:22.371 PM cloudphotosd[426]: Reset Sync Requested! Reason: Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=13 "Permission denied" UserInfo=0x7fa993f7fab0 {NSURL=file:///Users/user/Pictures/Photos%20Library.photoslibrary/private/com.apple.cloudphotosd/CloudSync.noindex/Engine/filecache/Aam/cplAamjATeQqJePb1WplPuvGR7Df+ce.jpeg, NSLocalizedDescription=Permission denied}

Same file name each time. I've tried repairing permissions and repairing the Photos library but it keeps doing it :/

Is 'cplAamjATeQqJePb1WplPuvGR7Df+ce.jpeg' a jpeg you can locate in your library? If it is then try renaming it or deleting the pic and re-adding it with a different filename.

Sorry but it's a long shot.

I've got a few bugs that I need to report with Yosemite but I can't because Feedback Assistant specifically wants me to change my Apple ID password before I can post. I don't want to change my Apple ID.

Ugh. I just had to too when I discovered my iMessage and iCloud syncing wasn't working because I had enabled two-factor and didn't generate a code. So when I went to generate it it asked me to change the password first. So I reluctantly did. Thankfully I just keep it in 1Password so I don't mind picking a random word and some numbers if I need to. The 12 diget code however, well thank goodness for 1Password there. I can keep it close but not out in the open. I do the same with my two-factor Google and DropBox codes.

But yeah, having to change passwords when you're so used to one sucks. And they don't let you keep it by making the new password the same. How dare Apple try and keep me secure? The nerve of them! lol

The worst part of it all is going around to all my Macs and devices afterwards and having to reenter the password over and over and trying to figure out if it's asking for my password or my security code. Because it does not make that clear at all.

What's this code? The recovery Key?

Might be placebo, but I think something in Safari was contributing to my issues.

Kept Safari shut since yesterday and been using Chrome, no restarts. I noticed in Safari yesterday I kept having issues on certain webpages, not word-for-word but things like 'content quit unexpectedly so the page reloaded', happening over and over.

I only have two extensions on Safari, AdBlock (off on GAF of course) and YouTube Center.

Hello! Just found this thread.

I'm running the latest build of the Yosemite public beta and I've been encountering significant Wi-Fi issues on my MacBook Pro after waking from sleep.

Internet access is unavailable for several minutes and seemingly non-existent during Power Nap. However, access to the web-based control panel of my router and any web site through its IP address is fine—so I'm putting this down to some sort of DNS issue.

My router uses Google DNS and my devices use my router's DNS settings, not their own. Only my Mac is having connectivity issues. Similarly, my router is able to ping Google.com, however my Mac is not—it must be the IP address of Google.com. Again, after several minutes, everything starts magically working again. Nothing out of the ordinary appears to be lurking in Console, so I'm really confused as to what the problem is.

Any idea what might be going on? Thanks!
