OXM Black demo

Lost in the hoopla over The Outfit news from the new OXM is the Black demo on the disk. I did a quick search and didnt see anything in the first five or so pages. I think there's already been a Black demo released on the OPM disk.

Anyway, I played through it a couple of times. Impressions:

- Its ugly. I know its an Xbox games, but it doesn't come close to ranking up there with the best looking games on the system. It looks muddy and kinda washed together.

- Its just a demo, but the AI isn't all that good. Just kinda your typical FPS easy target AI.

- No jumping, covering, leaning, or rolling. I'm sorry, but any FPS without some of those things is just not acceptable - especially a lean function.

+ The sound is really good - kinda remined me of MoH:EA.

+ You can blow shit up.

Overall, I think its just your standard FPS with the gimmick of being able to blow a lot of shit up. With no Live functionality, I don't think its worthy of anything more than a rent.

Flame away......

So same as the PS demo ehh, how is the framerate?

The framerate is much more stable. Early in the demo when you can blow up the first car, the PS2 demo slows down considerably. In the Xbox version, it stays smooth. In fact, the Xbox version feels faster gameplay-wise to me because of the more consistent framerate.

is it true that the enemies take an aweful lot of punishment before dying, like pd0? it would suck to have the game's guns feel and look so powerfull only to have them show nearly no efect on bad guys

edit; has this been confirmed for 360 as well?

Leaning really is something that I feel should be standard in any FPS. It was fundamental to CoD and I miss it in any game that fails to incorporate this ability. Is there a crouch/prone function in Black?

I watched the Black footage on Gametrailers and it did appear that enemies could take several rounds to the upper chest area, shudder and moan a little, and then get back to shooting you as if they weren't missing 70% of their lungs and the left portion of their heart.

I agree with your impressions. I'll go as far as to say that the Black demo = Killzone + destructible environments

Note: I do not like Killzone

The amount of damage enemies take feels reasonable in the demo (though the shotgun feels underpowered). I'm not sure if it's the video you're referring to, but the asylum footage on gametrailers features a lot of enemies wearing visible body armor. These guys seem to take more of a beating than the standard grunts - the first shotgun blast knocks them down, but it takes a second shot to put them down for good.

In the PS2 demo they took quite a bit of damage before going down. For example, the spread of the shotgun makes it almost useless unless you're close enough to see their panty lines and get a nice shot into their face.

I interviewed one of the level designers for this game, Keith "Urban Style" Jordanez, and he has some interesting words. The biggest secret he told me? You won't be on Planet Earth for the entire game...

I see, thanks for clearing that up.

I'm still not sure if I enjoy the idea of enemies surviving close range shots, or running after me following a few rounds into their legs and groin. It's a delicate balance between realism and keeping it fun...I guess it also depends on the style of the game (think of Goldeneye's titanium guards)

So it's gonna be like Halo 2? :P

Really? That's fucking lame.

OH TEH SPOILER NOESSS!!!111

Aeris dies!
Colton White is an Indian!
I AM YOUR FATHER!

Just got the demo, a couple of observations:

Controls aren't bad, and will probably end up being good as long as they let you up the sensitivity in the final version

Graphics are bad, framerate is good

Animation on enemies is cartoonish sometimes and bad the rest of the time

You take a lot of damage if you run out in the open, making the shotgun pretty much useless in the demo

Aside from glass and those pillars we've all seen 100 times, practically nothing is destructible

Sound is awesome

Watching the intro is more fun than the demo

This is good news for me. The farther away a FPS gets away from the norm (realistic theme and environments) the better.

The demo is okay. I wonder why this game is getting so much press though. EA maybe?

Pretty much. Retailers are being pushed to sell/preorder the game too. I still predict this game to drop in price in a couple months and a decent amount of trade ins due to no multiplayer

The demo definitely leaves much to be desired...

While the environments are destructible, blowing the hell out everything in sight does absolutely nothing to help you take out enemy soldiers. Sure, rolling a grenade under a vehicle is effective in taking out enemies within short range of the explosion, but in what shooter haven't we done that before?

I remember when Black and SiN Episodes were in the same 1up show. People were frothing for Black... I thought SiN looked so much better. I'm just not getting the big attraction of Black, but I'm not like a big weapons guy. I'm assuming the weapons are the main attraction since they have like 100 bullets from different weapons in the print ad.

How did you play the review copy?

Review copies have been sent out.

I can't comment on the leaving Earth bit, but it seems from the two introductory missions that the game is wholly terrestrial.

Uh, most shooters still have static backgrounds that don't effect gameplay.

And the demo build is old, I don't think the final game will dissapoint (if you're looking for a fun, straightforward shooter).

Yeah, but when EA and Citerion claimed that Black would feature destructible environments that would impact the gameplay in a big way, gamers most definitely expect them to keep their word on it.

I like the black demo. I even plan on buying the game actually. Keep in mind i'm in search of a one player FPS anyway.
So far black gives me this "arcade" unrealistic feel that i really like and i needed an FPS like that. Too much pseudo-realistic shooters lately, or maybe i do too much Rainbow Six at the job...

Wow. This is the first i've heard about there being no jump, roll, or lean move. Thats just shit. I can't believe they wouldn't think to have one of those things in the game. I don't know how thats gonna feel but I know it can't be good.
