Thousands entered the former Jewish enclaves, some setting an abandoned synagogue ablaze in a settlement.

Crowds celebrated in the town of Rafah, on the border between Gaza and Egypt.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said the Israeli withdrawal was an historic and joyful day for his people, but some issues still had to be resolved.

The Palestinian Authority says it will continue to insist on total freedom of movement between Gaza and Egypt - otherwise, they add, the Israeli occupation of Gaza will not have really ended.

i thought egypt controlled that border though..

...

yup, cnn says the following:: http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/09/12/gaza/index.html

Israel formerly guarded the Philadelphi corridor, a narrow strip of land separating Gaza from Egypt. But after negotiations with Israel, Egypt took over guarding the corridor, deploying more than 100 policemen.

that statement by the Palestinian Authority is kinda confusing then.

anyway, lets hope this continues to move in the right direction.

I think they "celebrated" by burning everything that had Jewish symbolism (even entire Synagogs) on it.

Not exactly a heartwarming gesture of peace.

they destroyed all the homes but left the synagogues knowing the palestinian after 37 years of occupation would mostly likely destroy them... and when they do, israel would say, "look at the bastards, they're destroying holy sties"

no. the israeli army bulldozed most of the building at the Palestinian Authorities request (many people dont realize that).. greenhouses, sewage/pluming and all that crap was left intact, the PA wants to rebuild everything from scratch.. the synagogues were left intact since its forbidden by the religion or something like that.

i found more info on the Egypt thing::

Two-hundred (Egyptian) soldiers began to take up position early on Saturday under a deal with Israel which will eventually see 750 border troops deployed.

However Israel will continue to control all movement of people and goods between Gaza and Egypt

This arrangement is supposed to last six months, but Palestinians worry it may become permanent.

Palestinians won't stop till Israel is wiped off the planet.

Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims won't stop until Israel is forced to wipe them off the planet with their conciderable nuclear arsenal. good thing Israel has nukes and its middle-eastern enemies, for the most part, do not. and if they ever do acquire a handful of nuclear weapons, Israel and the U.S. will swiftly wipe those weapons out.

oh there ain't no party like a west bank party 'cause a palestinian party don't stop don't stop BANG let the bomb drop.

I have it on pretty good authority that this is all a ruse, and Sharon plans on using this as motive when he rolls into the West Bank with tanks and military and takes it all for himself. The guy I know is over in Israel right now, and he's saying thats why Sharon didn't have any of his allies with him, and why most of the Government went along with him.

just something to watch.

a guy on another board I've posted on for years is with the press covering the israeli government.

for what website.. and why hasnt this been reported.. if anything, this has more to do with the palestinians growing population, israels inability to control the situation and their belief that this will validate what they have been saying for ages..

I wouldn't say it's a ruse, exactly. But Sharon is an experienced military man, and knows what's what. There won't be "peace and brotherhood" with Palestine in our time. However, they are welcome (and should) take this as a good sign, a good step forward. Once things in Palestine calm down and Hamas' "business as usual" resumes, then Sharon will have an event to point to and say "Hey, I tried" before continuing his "business as usual".

well considering the isreali's marched the palestinians out of Jerusalem in th 40's instead of trying to live with them...what could you expect.

not exactly as it happened.

anyway, someone on the bbc comments page made a good point.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4142910.stm#ashraf

Abdullah's comments encapsulate the dilemma faced by even the most moderate Israelis. On the one hand, there is hope and the knowledge that large concessions must be made if a peaceful compromise is to be found. Yet, on the other, it seems as though whatever action Israel takes, there will always be extremists who will accept nothing less than the destruction of Israel.

Jesus christ, the whole damn Arab league told them to get out of the way so they could march straight into Israel and not have to worry about killing any of their own brothers. Too bad for them Israel kicked their asses, and the Palestinians didn't have anywhere to go to. (None of the arab countries would let the Palestinian refugees become citizens except Jordan, and most of them forced the Palestinians back into Israel)

Although, if you want to believe Israel forced them out, then go ahead.
