I'm pretty sure you have to be a Christian to fully appreciate it.

Are you trying to say Christians enjoy snuff films? I mean that would explain the witch burnings and other acts in the past ... but wow. ;)

Jesus' death on the cross and subsequent resurrection hold DEEP meaning and impact with Christians. Without his death and resurrection we would still be doomed by sin. His sacrifice on the cross, as a willing and completely innocent victim, allowed him to claim victory over both sin and death.. that allows him to also reach out his hand and grant salvation to anyone who believes in him (as God).

Let's just say that in the continuum of the history of time, Jesus' death and resurrection are the singular most important moments to a christian.

Christians die to sin and are resurrected in the glory of God so we meditate on the death and resurrection of Jesus quite a bit. It's great to have this visual tool to help us appreciate the beautiful tragedy that was his death and not take our salvation for granted.

If Mel were smart, he'd silence all the detractors of the film and make a followup that detailed his resurrection. I think that'd be the perfect compliment; one film with the intense gore and the death of Jesus, and then his subsequent triumphant resurrection.
