I suppose its worth depends on what you want to do with it. What site is this config from? There are some pretty cheap parts there which usually means that 50-100 dollars more gets a much better computer.

It's pretty clear from his choice of GPU that he's not out for cutting edge.
Oh, i think nvidia and ATi is going to release a cheap DX10 VGA, so waiting for at least 2 months will make him 100% ready for any future windows vista upgrade.

Sorry I should've indicated what I need the computer for. I'm definitely not going for cutting edge. I basically need a PC for programming, surfing the net, and email. I won't be playing games. The main OS will be XP but I'll also install Linux through VMWare or via dual-boot.

Do you guys know when prices will drop? How much of a price drop are we looking at? I need a computer fairly quickly, so if it's in the range of $50 or so then I might as well get this unless there is some glaring reason not to.

Here's the link to the online store.

I've changed the motherboard from the default because I need a serial and parallel port, and also upgraded the RAM to DDR-667 (which is supported by the mobo I chose).

Please let me know if there's a better configuration. I don't need a powerhouse -- I plan to go all out on a new desktop next summer. This is just something I need to get some work done in the meantime.

Edit: I also changed the video card from the default because I want a DVI input.

Actually, some AMD price drops are showing up today. Intel's releasing its Core 2 processor officially on the 27th, which just happens to be better performers (and cooler running) than the last batch of Pentiums. The Core 2 also happens to beat AMD's equivalent products at the prices that AMD was selling at, so they slashed their prices in an effort to bring up their price\performance ratio. For that matter, the Pentium 4's are also seeing major price drops as Intel wants to clear them out. That 805 processor should be under $90 by the end of the week, if not sooner.
