PC game recommendations please

I recently picked up a good PC that can run any of the new games out there. For the past few years I have had to deal with a 600mhz computer. Now I have a need for some new games. What has come out in the past few years that imust be played? Keep in mind I am not a fan of RTS games.

Myth The Fallen Lords and Myth II Soulblighter they are RTS games but not at all like all the RTS games. They are more strategy as their is no base building or any kind of harvesting anything.

There are some fun shooters you can pick up for $20 these days and they still look good!

- Max Payne 2
- Far Cry
- Call of Duty

Of course, make it a point to pick up Half-Life 2. I'd also recommend Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

Half Life 2
Far Cry
Call of Duty
Doom 3
Warcraft 3 online (and ta' hell with yer hate fer RTS)

You don't need a monster rig to play it and it's a couple of years old but I still love Rise of Nations. It's just a great game. RoN has just the right mix of Age of Empires, Civilization, and Command and Conquer.

UT2k4 is a must. Onslaught + a shit ton of mods = happy camper. You could play this for months. It's by far the best FPS on the PC. Half Life 2 just isn't all that great, imo.

Several of my friends are really into World of Warcraft and swear by it but I've got no experiece with it first hand.

If you want to waste time, lose friends and fail in your studies get World of Warcraft....

Halo PC. $20! Better online than Halo 2! And you get to use a real FPS gaming setup...

And Psychonauts. Unless you want it on Xbox.

O.K. guys now that I've got my laptop I can start playing PC games too! So tell me....as a complete newbie, which first person shooter should I get aquainted with first? Doom 3? UT2k4? Or HL2? Mind you, I never *got* this genre and don't see what all the fuss is about. So if anything, I need to be converted first :D

Half-Life w/ Team Fortress Classic. Or Quake 3.

Wow, well, that's tough. How newb of a newb are you? I mean, if you never played the first Half-Life, I'd start there, seriously. I'd stay away from the stuff like UT and Q3, because for 1 player they aren't much game...unless you want to get into the online thing. After HL, you'll just be blown away by what they accomplished with HL2. Then, gosh, there's so many other ones to branch off into. Return to Wolfenstein isn't bad, might be good for a beginner. And Call of Duty if the army thing strikes, that would be the best of that category. For a little extra thinking, like somebody already mentioned, the No One Lives Forever games are good......or maybe if the gun thing bores you completely, the Thief series would be worth checking out. Or, if it's just the shooting that turns you on, something like Serious Sam would be the way to go. For the newer games, Far Cry and Riddick are worth it, though I wouldn't recommend jumping into Far Cry first, there are levels in that game that get pretty daunting. Great game though. Doom 3, um, yeah, maybe. Personally, it doesn't do much for me. For a story-line FPS, the story isn't very gripping. And for an out and out shooter FPS, the levels are too cramped and repetitive, IMO. I'm sure there's a couple other favorites of people that I've missed, but those are the ones I'm familiar with.

what about brothers in arms I heard that was a good one.

Doom 3 (also see classic doom) - A classic "corridor" style shooter. A throwback to the gameplay of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Not overly sophisticated, but a fun fast-twitch game. Just remember to print out the locker codes from GameFAQs. ;)

S.W.A.T. 4 - Tactical squad-based FPS with emphasis on non-lethal tactics. You can choose to just blast your way through missions, but it's much more challenging and rewarding to play by the rules.

World of Warcraft - Rested experience means you get experience even when you're logged out, so you don't really need to sacrifice your real life to get anywhere. The art direction is above and beyond anything I've seen in an MMORPG to date.

UT2K4
Call Of Duty
Call Of Duty: United Offensive
Half-Life 2 and Counter-strike: Source
No One Lives Forever
No One Lives Forever 2
Far Cry
Return To Castle Wolfenstein
Doom 3
Quake 3 + Team Arena and any Q3 mods
Serious Sam
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
Soldier Of Fortune II: Double Helix
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Rallisport Challenge
Freedom Fighters

What can I say? I love first person shooters.

I've read that's good too, haven't played it yet though. Was kind of holding off on that one only because I played several of the Medal of Honor games on PS2 and then Call of Duty on the PC and was a little burned out on the army theme. When the price drops, I may pick it up though.

Another vote for UT2k4.

The learning curve can be a little steep against skilled human players, but the bot intelligence in that series is extremely good and can be scaled down to n00b level while you learn.
