PC gaming catchup!

I suck and haven't finished a PC game in...well, likely over half a decade. (Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure I think it was) I'm trying to catch up a bit and play the classics, as well as some hidden gems from many years ago. Don't suggest anything that requires massive 3d support because my system likely can't handle it. I'm talking more about games like Diablo, Baldur's Gate, Kohan, and others that are similar in system requirements. I'm currently playing through Septerra Core (good stuff, great writing) and I bought a Fantasy Pak a couple of years ago that has Kohan, Kohan: Ahriman's Gift, and Disciples on it. I'm thinking of tackling that next, or maybe seeking out a copy of Diablo and finally playing through that. Other games I'm interested in acquiring/finishing:

Total Annihilation ("best RTS ever" is something I keep hearing...)
Starcraft (maybe...wasn't crazy with what I played)
Warcraft II (classic, never finished it)
The Revenant (looks/sounds fun, love the fantasy stuff)
Age of Empires I+II (just 'cause)
Homeworld (liked what I played, own it already, just stopped playing 'cause it got complicated/hard)

Okay, nostalgia GO!

Moonbase Commander is good and pretty much any system will run it. If you have a few friends you can play it with, upgrade 'good' to 'the best ever'.

Hmm, no 3D stuff?

: Heroes of M&M3 (beats the living shit out of Disciples)
: Baldur's Gate 2, Fallout 2, Icewind Dale 2 (do not get Planescape: Torment - it sucks)
: The Longest Journey (best adv. game since the golden era of Sierra)

Wow, Longest Journey looks pretty gorgeous and interesting.

Is it a point-and-click style adventure game like Day of the Tentacle, and other games of that design? Or is it different, is there action, etc?

Total Annihilation is the "BEST RTS EVAR!!" but a bit dated nowadays, although still lightyears ahead in certain aspects.

The way the interface works and the queue'ing system is still king, along with the way certain types of enemies move (planes = :O) - But the inability to zoom really hurts it when compared to present day RTS'es. Graphics, while still looking very good show their age a bit.

Doesn't stop me from playing it once every 2 weeks thoug :)

Point and click. Get the game. I played a little bit of the beginning and I was amazed at the depth and amount of dialogue in the game, it definately felt like something getting good. Im going to play through it as soon as I get through Grim Fandango.

Which is my recommendation - Grim Fandango

It's not that Homeworld is really complicated, it's that the whole unit movement/management system blows. Hard to keep track of all the ships and battles on multiple fronts are nigh impossible.

Shame really, as everything else is really superb. Love the story, music, and abudance of different ship types.

You should check out Grim Fandango, Planescape:Torment, Alpha Centauri, System Shock 2, Freespace 2, and maybe Mafia. Those are all easily ran on an outdated machine. All classics.

Not sure if I can run either game but I may give them a go.

Whoa...Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is coming out soon too, and it'll be for X-Box and PC. Will have to check that out (on X-Box) after looking at the promo movie on IGN's site.

Both games are pretty low spec. If you can run homeworld you should definately be able to run these games. They both have simple polygons on prerendered backgrounds. Nothing too beefy.

go back and play some more starcraft. with people, preferably. if you go in with an action game + resource management mindset you will have fun.

Whoa. 10 bucks for The Longest Journey and system requirements that I definitely meet. Might have to get this down the line afterall! I can't afford crap right now though, so I'll try going through my backlog of already-owned games first. The 5 I have right now are:

Septerra Core
Kohan (+Ahriman's Gift)
Disciples
Homeworld

Anyone actually played Disciples?

The first Disciples? It's horrible. Don't even bother. Play the sequel if anything.

Total Annihilation is the best RTS ever, you'll fall over when you see how much content has been created for it by the devs and users.

This game called Supreme commander reminds me of it

Freespace 2 is another sure buy, there's so much user created stuff for that game you'll crap your pants.

Fallout 2.

What about the original Fallout? I remember playing the demo yeeeeeeeeears ago and liking it. And then there's Blade Runner...hmmmmmm. So many great games that I didn't play 'cause I was wrapped up in console gaming.

I'm definitely going to order The Longest Journey. It looks and sounds really freaking good from the stuff I've read and looked at.

TLJ is insanely good. One of the best adv. games ever made if not THE best. I finished almost 100 different adv. games and TLJ is in my top 3, next to Shannara and Sanitarium.

Blade Runner is in the first 20 :)

Fallout 2 fixes everything that was wrong with Fallout 1, has a bigger world, more stuff to do, *better* stuff to do, more weapons, more party members, more enemies, harder battles etc.

Everything you'd want from a Fallout sequel.

GET IT

Yeah, point-and-click. If you like those kind of games, I can't recommend TLJ enough. I really loved it. It's a shame good adventure games don't come out anymore.

Me personally I've been doing a lot of PC catchup myself. I just finished Mission Critical and have been playing Anachronox. Next up is a huge list of LucasArts adventure titlees that I've never played like the Monkey Island series and Leisure Suit Larry and King's Quest series from Sierra.

If I can get my hands on it, I'd like to check out Septura Core since you seemed to pimp it out in the other thread.
