I've been having this computer for afew years now, I've added more RAM and better sound and Video and two hard drives. Just last week I got Windows XP 2 pack and with it came the Firewall and the antivirus, well I also have a cable modem I've been using for afew years as well and it has never giving me a probelm. But now its downloading at crap speeds online, I was thinking that maybe the company was working on something but they're not. They told me everything seems to running fine, could it be that the firewall is blocking afew incoming ports and it's killing my speed?

Still downloading slow, I mean everything else is ok. Sites load up quick, but when I'm downloading it only goes at 20-40, sometimes 50. I would get 300+ afew weeks ago

Unfortunately SP 2 really screws with some of the ports and applies a lot of odd "default" settings to the http connection speeds in the reg. I'd say a few things you can look at are using adifferent browser (which really helps if you are using ie). You can also look at some 3rd party progs like Ashampoo that will fool around the reg and change internet x speeds w/o you having to do it.

Those are my recommendations. Definitely turn-off windows firewall saying (I'll monitor on my own). You can d/l a personal firewall, but I'd recommend against ZoneAlarm (sorry). It tends to not really catch malicious bugs and has problems with easy things like Outlook. Another rec would be Nod32 by a company called Eset. It is a all in one pkg.

Does A/v, Firewall, spyware. It really is all incompassing paired with an Opera browser. (It's my setup so I am somewhat partial)

Either way if connection speeds are really bothering you take a look at "tweakers" like Ashampoo or Tweak UI Pro.

Good Luck!
