PC Tech gurus - need help!

Hi folks, I don't usually come asking for PC help, but this one's a little complicated in that it's not my PC. My parents have a rickety old PC working, a PII 1GHz machine with crappy RAM and a crappier HD (15GB, I think) with WinXP and a dial-up connection. I wiped the HD once and reinstalled everything with XP on account of a virus, but there seems to be something else now. Within a minute of connecting online through dial-up, an error message pops up and says "LSA Shell export version encountered a problem blah blah blah needs to restart", and the whole computer shuts down within a minute.

Sounds an awful lot like a virus I've heard of. I'm about to drive over later in the week to help them out - burn crucial files to disc, chuck out old HD, install flashy new one - is this the best course of action to take or have I missed something obvious? They're especially touchy right now because of an impending wedding of one of my siblings and they were getting all excited about finally getting broadband in a couple of weeks, so I'd rather not screw it up or leave something out that'll come back and bite me in a few weeks.
