PES4 online strategies

I lose practically every game I play over the internet. My defence is shit, the opposition often open it up through clever though-balls and fancy dribbling and it seems gotten behind all too easily. My offence is total shit, it's always run down one wing and cross the ball in or sometimes to spice things up it's run down the other wing cross the ball in; there's do structure or plan and it compliments the shitty defence perfectly.

What must I do to be at least competitive online (I’m no pro offline either for that matter)? What are some strategies for organising my defence so that it is not so susceptible to through balls or splitting wide open all so often? And what are some strategies for sound offensive build up?

I'm currently playing in a league with results so far of 1 draw and 7 losses from 8 games, 6 goals for and 20 against. In that one draw my opponent scored in the 88th minute :\

Well, it sounds like the problem is.... you're "shit". ;) That will take time to fix. Experience is so important. But strategies and tips will no doubt help you improve faster.

How long have you been playing the series for?

On defense, guarding against through balls:

- you should pretty much always have someone in front of the person carrying the ball. do not lunge at them (not always, i mean), but jockey. holding R2 will keep the defender positioned well, but naturally hurts quickness (so, use a combination of regular running and R2 jockying). this will cut off passing lanes (and prevent them from dribbling easily, of course)

- do not constantly pull defenders out of position. be conscious of where each player belongs and what his role is. eg, do not have a CB follow a forward around the pitch, as it will create a hole in his area of the field. switching players appropriately is critical (and will take time to do properly) **this should help you against being split wide open

- sometimes the ball carrier will be in a situation where he can give a through pass easily (no defender marking him). in that case, be aware of the forwards who are making runs, or potentially could. maybe pull your defender backwards so if a through pass is made, you can either intercept it or be on the other side of the forward who receives it.

Sound offensive build up? ...where to begin? It depends on your team, formation, and personal style of play. It's probably best to observe your opposition when playing against them -- I know you'll be busy worrying about defending properly, but actually understanding how they're successful will definitely help you on offense.

Otherwise, I don't know what advice I can give you. Try the Training Mode (it's very good). And a few pointers....

- L1+X is important... especially when you become comfortable with using it as a one-time pass (ie, pass to player, press L1+X before ball reaches him, said player first-touch passes then runs)

- remember that through passes (triangle) are pressure sensitive and will go in the direction that you press.

- move the ball forward with your DMF/SMFs -- try beating your opponent one on one (if dribble accuracy is high, i mean) and using little give-and-go passes between your mid-fielders. this will provide you with greater odds and more choices when you get upfield. otherwise, if you just immediately move it up to your forwards, they'll have difficulties. in that case, never be afraid to pass the ball backwards. even all the way back to your defensemen. control the field.

I've got to stop myself. There's more I could say (re, crossing, etc), but I'll leave it to other people

i've just started playing we8LE ..and loving it ...but i remember seeinga thread somethere on another forum with images of all the pitches ... does any1 have a link?

Since PES3.

Yeah defending against the ball carrier seems to be a big problem. The opponent can typically get past my weak, ill-timed lunge attempts are therefore create space to go on the attack. I'll try to improve my positioning which will hopefully create better lunge opportunities.

- do not constantly pull defenders out of position. be conscious of where each player belongs and what his role is. eg, do not have a CB follow a forward around the pitch, as it will create a hole in his area of the field. switching players appropriately is critical (and will take time to do properly) **this should help you against being split wide open

This sort of ties in with the above, the opponent gets past my poor attempts at attacking the ball carrier, space is opened up and in the ensuing panic I try to get defenders attacking the ball carrier en masse. Not smart I know and I will keep players back behind play or position them in specific areas to watch for through balls or as another line of defence. So I don't do this completely mindlessly, but I can certainly tell that my opponents can read the play far better than I can and will often find gaps and holes in my defence and this combined with the aforementioned defensive issues makes for desperate games of trying to hang on and losing by one or two goals, or some real lopsided score lines of 4-0, 5-0 etc.

I suck at this to, although I manage win a few matchs out of luck and some tiny piece of skill....

I never read the maual as i dont have one so I proably dont even have a clue how to do the important stuff.

What the best site out there to give me some tips on advanced skills or tactics (xbox version)

Easy! Easy! Easy! Easy!

YOU SHUT UP!!!!!!!!

never just pass

pass and move, by using the one-two pass instead

you don't have to return it immediately, but the player will continue to run on

and utilize the black/whatever R2 is button to move your defenders around to block through balls

Just got wiped again 2-0 host leg and 5-0 client leg. Season record is now 0 wins, 2 draws and 10 losses.

I'm so beyond pissed about all this that I head butted a wardrobe several times and shouted explicatives at the floor.

I can't be helped; I'm done with this shit.

In defence always be aware of the strikers position in comparison to your defenders, look at the map for this. If a player tries a hopeful throughball or even just a normal pass to a forward press and hold the pass button (if the forward is outnumbered hold pass and shoot) to bring your defender/defenders too the ball and either intercept or put pressure on the forward recieving the ball. Try to never give an opposition midfielder time to pick out a pass, again use the pass and shoot buttons to pressure him. But use them wisely, because if you use them too much you could create unwanted gaps in your defence. Finally do not try to pass your way out of defence. If your in trouble then just whack the ball out of there :)

In midfield/attack don't just go for hopeful passes. Sometimes, if you really run out of idea's, then this is ok. But most of the time try to pass and move and build up the play. If you don't have a player to pass forward to then pass sideways or even backwards. Be patient and keep the ball and wait for a real opportunity to apear, because otherwise your just giving away possesion. When your on the ball always try to be unpredictable, I suppose that is easier said then done. But say the ball comes to your striker, turn onto the ball as it arrives not after it arrives, use a pass+shoot combination to fient away from the defender. Use the shoulder button to push the ball about a bit. I always think its best to not only do tricks and bits of skill when you come to a defender, but to do thi even when unchallenged (though not to much or you look like an idiot :)). Because that gets you in the right frame of mind and prepared to be skillful when its really needed. For crossing don't always just use the normal cross. Use a combination of crosses. Normal crossing is ok but can often be easily defended. Use double tap cross for a powerfully driven cross, or if your clear down the side and close to the 18 yard box use a triple tap low drive cross. This one is the most dangerous cross of all. Because if your striker doesn't put the ball in the net a sliding opposition defender can easily do it instead. Bare in mind I'm talking about the PC version (its just the same as the others but the controls may differ).

I'm quite good at the game. I just played my first season in a properly orginised league that's been going on for a few seasons already. I finished second in the spanish division with one of the worst teams in the spanish league (Athletic Club).

I'm not sure what you're expecting. It sounds like you're relatively new to the game. Most people online will be very experienced.

What difficulty do you play offline? 3 star? How do you find it?
