No, this is indeed real.

The New Zealand-based filmmaker has filed a lawsuit against his Oscar-winning trilogy's distributor, New Line Cinema, claiming the studio has stiffed him on potentially millions of dollars in profits from the first Rings installment, 2001's The Fellowship of the Ring.

Jackson's production company, Wingnut Films, filed the suit Monday in federal court in Los Angeles, charging New Line and subsidiary Katja Motion Pictures with some book-cooking when it came to accounting for DVD sales. The director also believes New Line gave sweetheart deals to its affiliates when it came to working out licensing agreements, instead of shopping the movie around to get a bigger payday.

heh. Peter Jackson gets mighty pissed off when he thinks some organization is trying to screw film makers. Just ask the New Zealand film comission.

What is with film companies that keep trying to do this?

Uhm, they're soulless corporations without integrity who have no interest in rewarding the artist(s) who lined their pockets?

The buzz around town is that everyone at New Line hates Lord of the Rings.

They do have one of the Oscars prominantly displayed in one of the offices, and plenty of posters, etc. too, but the execs. that made the trilogy happen have all moved on to greener pastures.

There's nothing Hollywood people hate more than sucesses they had nothing to do with.

That one New Line producer that's on all of the DVDs seemed to really enjoy it.

Anyways, if it wasn't for LOTR, New Line wouldn't exist today.

Yup, Warner Brothers was going to shut down the studio but New Line gambled their fate on the movies.

Why? Does New Line have some stake in The Hobbit rights, or could Jackson simply do it for another studio?

New Line owns the rights to film The Hobbit. They just can't distribute it. Sony holds those rights now that they own MGM/UA and they aren't ever going to budge.
