You've heard of Gotham TV, the revolutionary new feature which we're introducing to the world through PGR3. Everyone that's heard about it is talking about it. It's hard to explain without actually seeing it, but we'll try and give you a little more info to whet your appetite...

PGR3 is a massive step forward in all areas of gaming, from gameplay to graphics, from audio to atmosphere, but we wanted to go further than that. PGR's unique style of street racing is now a televised sport! Tune into Gotham TV for all the racing news, features, and updates from around the world; straight to your Xbox 360.

A sports-style news ticker runs along on the bottom of most screens in PGR3, keeping you updated on what's happening in the Gotham community. Did somebody just break the world record in NYC? Did your friend just fight off a bunch of other racers to take the gold? Is the PGR3 all-time world champion about to race some of their rivals? All of this will be available to view at your fingertips through the Gotham TV sports ticker.

So you think you're a pretty good racer? Now it's your time to prove it! The rewards have never been greater... Gotham TV will broadcast your successes (or your losses) to the world - anybody can tune in to watch you race live on air. You'll feel the pressure of a car on your tail even more than before, knowing that hundreds of fans hang on your every move. You'll even be told how many people are watching!

Tune in to your favourite racing channel, and view live racing with hundreds of other Gotham fans. If you're lucky, you'll see some Gotham Heroes (all-star PGR3 players) decimate everyone else on the track. Make sure you study their racing style and spot their weaknesses, and send a game invite if you're up to the challenge.

What are the best things about Gotham TV for us? It's fun, informative and smart. The system looks at your friends list and filters the news for you, keeping you up to date with the people you care about, as well as hearing about the record breaking news from the world's best players. It's great to flick your eyes down to the ticker when you're in the menus and see what's going on live, online, as you're playing. And if something catches your attention, hop over and watch, then return to your game.

Gotham TV - it's channel surfing for gamers!

Sounds interesting. Ticker could be annoying - hopefully an option.

I guess this would need some kind of server side buffering by MS though. Record the netplay and replay it to any spectators. Otherwise you'd run the risk of slowing down the actual games if lots of people are playing.

I hope they do some celebrity/racing driver specials for you to tune into. One of the benefits of 'TV' is something to talk about the next day. For that you need lots of people watching the same thing sometimes.

That sounds very cool, but I'll believe how well it will make the game atmospheric when I see it.

To this date, Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast is STILL the BEST version out of this series!

All these features that let people know how good or bad you are....are you going to have a choice? It's great if you want to compete and don't mind how you do, or if you're completely awesome and know most of the time people will be seeing good news about you, but what if you suck?

You must be able to turn it off surely. Too many people would be put off by having their contant failures and losses broadcast to all their friends and possibly others.

Same here. I'm really going to enjoy playing this as people I don't know or care about tell me I suck.

[comic book guy]What a really good idea...[/comic book guy]

Gotham
New York City. The nickname was popularized by Washington Irving and others in Salmagundi, a series of satirical sketches (1807-1808).

Metropolis
A major city, especially the chief city of a country or region: Chicago, the metropolis of the Midwest.

Metropolis Street Racer -> Project Gotham Racing

Yeah, but now they seem to stick with Gotham, AND use it beyond just the title (like Gotham TV). Would be awesome if they somehow could include the batmobile. :P

"ah, but now they seem to stick with Gotham, AND use it beyond just the title (like Gotham TV)."

I think that's because sega owns the MSR name (I think?).

No, I meant more like Metropolis = Superman, Gotham = Batman.

Oh OK. It's just that some people don't know about the meaning of Gotham in relation to anything other than Batman.

So we are suppose to get excited about a ticker?

It'd be awesome if you could view real-time races and bet on drivers with credits earned from the game.

Now this would have been a good idea.

Did you not even read, Gek?

well, its gek + xbox racer = bitch first, read later

:p

Anyway, this sounds like a great feature. I wonder is there any limit how many can watch live your races?

Damn, that is a seriously good idea! It would make watching races much, much more fun.

Yes I read about watching live, nothing about it is that innovative imo. Only thing that would interest me is watching how people take corners and viewing their braking points which I can already do with ghosts. I am more concerned about lag this could cause.

This is an excellent idea.

I am more concerned about lag this could cause.

Spectators are always of the lowest priority, and these games are probably highly client-side when it comes to the actual driving itself, so I can't imagine it making a bit of a difference.

Unreal Tournament had mods made where they created a broadcast server that ran alongside the actual game server and people would log into the broadcast server to spectate clan matches and what not. SO far as I could tell, this caused no lag on either side.

Come on, this is the first time gaf has heard of this?
Everybody is talking about it

Hope they include this feature in Halo3. I would love to watch some matches between good teams.
hell yeah! i remember watching a lot of the Thresh matches from Quake II back in the day (prerecorded tho)... fucking awesome to watch his skills. Would love to see the top player in Halo 3 'perform'. I got a lot of ideas how to improve my game watching Quake II championship matches... would love to be able to do the same on 360. Watching it 'Live' would make it even more special.

Welcome to 1998.

Half-Life 1 had spectating, nothing new here really.
they didn't have it in this way though. which is much superior. when you loaded up HL did it tell you a badass top level clan match was on and invite you to come watch it live? there's an enormous different between what you got back then and what they will do in this. it's not even close really.

Perfect Dark will also have it. Probably any first party game with competetive online play like this will have it.

J Allard talked about holding official tournaments using this feature, which I think is a great idea. Being able to invite spectators could attract sponsors, which could end up meaning the payouts or prizes for tournaments would go up.

The online PC racing community has been doing this sort of thing for a while now. I hope it takes off the way Microsoft is saying it will.

high stakes tournaments are cool and all that, but theres no way im gonna play a game for a million bucks if im sitting in my apartment playing over live

if it was lan or something like they do for pc gaming tournaments then sure, id do it, but i putting a million dollars on the line for something thats so unpredictable goes against what pro gaming is all aboot.

Well it's not your million dollars in the first place. If that was the requirement for the tournament than everyone will be under the same restrictions.

did you get specific places to watch from, or could you move about invisibly, like when you die in counterstrike? That'd be cool, following the battles around

Sounds absolutely useless to almost everyone that will own/play it but the top few racers.

I think they would have better spent their time by allowing shoutcast to stream for audio, while racing online or offline.

I'd say you have a good point if you were putting up money to play. But when the entry fee is probably going to be a Live account, there's not a whole lot to lose.

Screw that. I demand all racing games run at 120 fps; It's waay more responsive.

Joking aside, I do see where you're coming from. I'd love this to be able to maintain 60.

Edit: On second thought, I'd love to see a game locked at something above 60. I swear, it does feel better. ;_;

Your tv wouldn't be able to display it though. Maybe HDTV's are different, but normal TV's can't display higher than 60fps.

But yes, you are right, for games where there is rapid motion, >60fps is noticeable.

Yeah, that's what I was going for. Quake 3 is the most notable example, on a modern high-end PC. I'd even wager that some console games, namely VOOT, constantly run at something over 60 fps. Well, maybe, in VOOT's case.

I don't see how they could, since the tv simply can't put out any more than 60 frames per second. It'd be nice, but I don't think it can.

Just because the screen refresh rate is maxed doesn't mean the console can't generate more frames per second, though.

Because it is a no-brainer. It was one of the few areas that made PGR better than MSR.

I can let Bizarre hype up the next game over some gimmick, I don't care, but they really have no excuse this time not to implent a high frame rate with next-gen hardware. We know they can do it so it is not a talent issue...
