PGR3 - WOW - New Screens

The more I see, the more impressed I am. Bring it on!

Last week we released a single screenshot from PGR3 which seemed to cause quite a stir all over the Internet...

Initially, people claimed it was just a photograph! I think people have pretty much come to the correct conclusion now though - this is what people can genuinely expect from the next generation of video games. Bizarre Creations are proud to be one of the developers leading the charge toward High Definition, and we're very pleased with the results so far.

As a small gift to all of you who still refuse to believe that last week's image was a real screenshot, here we have the wire-frame version of the same scene, captured from the same dev kit that the original screenshot was taken. After reading the comments from all over the web (ranging from "That's awesome" to "That's a fake!"), we felt we had to release something which proved we're not messing with you.

Some people also claimed that we only showed this particular building because it's our most impressive. That's simply not true... and I wanted to work out a way to prove it to you. So as I wandered over to Chris's desk to get this wire-frame shot I decided that I would ask him to grab whatever was on his screen at that particular moment. After a couple of seconds of fiddling with his 360 controller to get the best angle, Chris rendered out this new shot for us. This is New York City again, in a slightly different area of town - and as with the shot last week, it's just a random street rather than a specific 'showpiece' area that some were worried about.

Yes, it is possible to get all areas of the game that need it up to this level of detail – that’s what you get for 2 years work with up to 35 artists here at Bizarre, plus additional help from outsourcing companies! Some areas (ie. those with simple buildings in real life) won’t be as detailed, but where buildings are that complex, the game will be that complex too. And in case you don’t believe me again, the wire frame screenshot is printed below, taken immediately afterwards from the same dev kit, by switching the game into wireframe mode.

This is how PGR3's artwork looks right now. On actual 360 hardware. Please bear in mind, however, that you're still looking at a work in progress video game, and that the final in-game effects and lighting aren't even in place yet. We're still a long way from the finish line, but things will only improve from this point on. Start preparing now, and save your pennies for a widescreen HDTV and surround sound system. Although the game will still look stellar on a regular TV, you'll get the best experience when you go High Def.

In other news, Roger (our super code monkey) did a small show 'n' tell for the team. He demonstrated some of the new effects that have recently been put into the game. A whole bunch of us crowded into the meeting room, and saw the game running in all it's 720p glory on a huge projector. Running into barriers and watching the crowd scatter in terror never gets old!

In our debug build, we can detach the camera and wander over the cityscape, without having to worry about driving our car to the particular bit of track we want to look at. It really helps when you need to get a good look at some of the buildings or other geometry in the game. Whilst I was whizzing about in the debug camera, I stumbled upon something really impressive...

When you zoom right up to the back of your car, you can actually see gases being vented from the engine! You notice heat haze at the back of your car's exhausts! It ripples the air around it, and gives the impression of heat blasting over the back bumper of your super car. (I'll try to get a screenshot of this soon). It's simply awesome - Should. Have. Sent. A. Poet.

Anyways, check back next week for more updates!

That one doesn't look as good as the one from last week -- there's some blurry textures there on the bottom left -- but still very impresive.

It's nice to hear the effects aren't all in place yet.
And I wish we could find out if the shadowing will change depending on light source.

But really, it looks great. The old screenshot grew on me the more I looked at it, but by that time I didn't have a place to praise it. I just want to see this game ingame in motion.

While it's true it's a bit blurry, there is also the awful jpg compression to blame there.

If the next-gen GTA can look something along those lines...

THEN MILLIONS WILL BUY IT, doesn't matter how damn stale the formula is. :lol

Props to the PGR3 team, that looks amazing!

Awesome indeed!! PGR3 on X360 is gonna rock!

Btw looks like the polycount isn't that high....that's what you get when you have good texture artitsts....(hope the PGR3 team is reading this)

Great work guys

It's a pity MS never had shots like this for E3. I would have killed the whole Xbox1.5 thing.

I think they have all the worlds in high detail in their development systems, then maybe render the trackside bits higher res and 'lesser' buildings lower res.

Still looks gorgeous though. Please god let them not get carried away with fancy bloom nonsense etc. Keep it subtle.

But how would you notice that in a racing game. It's not like you can speed up time and have the sun moving at lightning speed.
I don't really care about screens taken from pretty angles released just to create hype. I want to see the actual gameplay in motion.
Screw that. I want the finished game in my finished xbox360 running on my free HDTV and free xbox live platinum hand delivered by Mr. Gates now. :)

Yakitate Japan was funny today with eps 31-32 .

Cant stop lauging with the final egg in the roulette :lol

From your mouth to god's ears. Please don't screw up the lighting.

I am just hoping that within the next 90 days we will see stuff that really shows Xbox 360 in a good light.

I think we will but there is still just a small part of me that is a bit skeptical.

Help me out here MS. :)

PLEASE leave the debug camera in the finished game!!! Also, for those who think that poly count is low, doesnt that bode well for a possible 60fps? *drool*

no Xbox 1.5 comments yet?

You guys are getting soft... :D

No, they're just getting banned :lol

BTW, if PGR3 is a racer, where are all the damn cars??? ;) I kid. This is a pre-order for me, baby!

They should really change the name of this game/series. Very few people know "Project gotham racing" and it`s one of the main reasons PGR2 sold badly. I can`t tell you how many people thought it was some kind of Batman game or other shit.

I also don`t quite see the point of such detailed cities, seems like a waste of resouces, imo.
Especially if they`re going with shitty looking cars again and 30fps.

this will look insane at 150mph.

Maybe they'll get parralax mapping to work in the next version of PGR, i think that is the only thing that will make it look even more realistic.

Perhaps this is my ignorance of the racing world, but I at least know that 'gotham' means city.

I have no idea what a "Gran" or a "Turismo" is, not do I know what "Forza" is. Project Gotham Racing sounds cool to me.

Don't try to argue with Gregory on anything concerning PGR or Forza, just an advice :D

If you select a race in the morning and the shadows are burned onto the textures for a noon sun, it won't look exactly right.

I hope they get the lighting right, too.

And I think the XBOX 1.5 thing was born from early screens that looked like something out of this generation. It's good that's slowly becoming a thing of the past with new screens.

Yeah, but still after 4 games very few people have heard of this series. Atleast in my experience.
Being Xbox exclusive doesn`t help though.

The picture of the sports car on the front cover doesn't give any clues that it's a racing game then? :lol

4?

MSR
PGR
PGR2...

and MSR even had a different name

They really probably should change the name...if I had never heard of it, I would think something like...

"Hmm...project gotham racing...so it's racing....through the projects...in gotham? So it's like the batmobile gone gangsta..."

Now that is just amazing....*and* cars will have FULLY MODLED interiors with animated drivers.....

This is one of the must have launch X360 games for me....

BTW, this is my favorite PGR3 shot:D

The first photo is incredible. I actually recognize the street and restaurant in Chinatown. If the final game looks even remotely as detailed as I imagine it looking, I think we'll all be blown away. This is the first time I've ever seen such an accurate rendering of NYC.

or a horribly dissapointing mtv special. wtf were they thinking?

and this continues to impress. cant wait to see actual pics of you know, cars AND environments. i dont even car if its replay shots... a movie would be beyond killer though.

oh, and i cant wait to see the crowd run for their lives when you slam into barracades :lol

Yes it did. Because it was a launch game.
PGR2 only sold half.
