I think the character art looks pretty good - is this a straight port (story wise) or are there any new quests/story branches?

Well, to be fair, some of us already heard the totally fuckified music too.

We weep for many reasons.

And to answer someone's question, SUPPOSEDLY, the remakes of PS1, PS2, and PS4 are all being compiled into a PS Trilogy disc to be released here in the West. At some point.

Late last year it was tentatively scheduled for a Q1 release, but since PS2 Remake hasn't even come out in Japan yet, I highly doubt it.
 
while I think the art *could* have been better, it doesnt seem nearly as bad as Phantasy Star Generation 1's art, which to me seemed almost horrible.

Based on that site, I'd hardly say the new art is all screwed up. The new designs look pretty good, but those particular pics are poor (blocky edges around characters, for instance).

As for the music, did they create new tunes? Re-creating the tunes with higher quality samples would be nice, but if they ditched the old tunes, that was a mistake.

Geez..all you people complaining about the art, are so crazy. The orignal art on Phantasy Star 2 looks like the standard 80's anime design. The new re-design looks like mordern anime design. The New art looks good. Alot of you are letting nostalgia blind you. Heck, I played the original Phanrasy stars on the Sega master system and the Genesis, and I don't see what are the screaming is about. as long as the story and general game is there with upgraded graphics, iam there.
 
I don't think the new art's horrible, but it's certainly lower quality. Sure, the old stuff's rather 80's, but that's one reason I like it so much. Don't see that much these days, do you? It's also clean and vibrant (Amy's hair is supposed to be RED, dammit!). I find the old aesthetic to be nostalgic and attractive and not necessarily inferior to the more modern design sensibilities seen in the new art.

Edit: Okay, so the old Rudo is kinda ugly.
 
Actually, looking at this artwork, it doesn't seem that bad to me. Perhaps that's because the artwork for PS1 was HORRID. Talk about butchering a game. At least they're getting better.
 
Ugh, that's some ugly generic contemporary anime art (contemporary by anime standards). The designs aren't so bad but the art is argh.
 
They didn't have to keep the same style of designs, but they absolutely should have went with the style from PS IV or something similar. And also the music compositions are the same, but the instruments used and the quality are very poor.

Eh, I have to admit the old art, as much as I loved it then, is now terribly outdated. It still looks weird to see them all redrawn though.

Anna looks especially ugly - I remember thinking she was a babe when I was a kid and I first got PSII.

I couldn't agree more. This is one of my most favored games as well but to see something like this is really aggrevating. The art is bad, but it doesn't hit as hard as the music does because the music in the originals was absolutely beautiful. If they ruined the gameplay or the story, there will definetly e hell to pay.

I will not only post something snarky on GAF, I will send them hate mail under every e-mail account I have! I will end up buying it and playing it seeing as how PS II is one my favorite games.

Fixed.

Since I actually like art styles from the 80's, I don't consider the redesigned designs an improvement. They don't really look all that contemporary, but they don't capture the retro flair of the originals, either.

If it had been up to me, I would've loved to see Satoshi Urushihara update the characters for the remake. Judging by some of his more high-tech stuff, I think he could really have done the original designs justice.

I can STILL hear the sheer butchery done to the main theme. Argh.

As for new art vs old art. Well, Nei looks like shit. So does Rolf, Anna, Amy, Shir, and Kain.

80's art may be outdated, but it's still superior to this shit. PS4 had the best art, imho.
