hmm, let me recall...

You are sent to an area where there are enemies... (mission based)...then all around are spheres... which sphere you absorb determines a feature or attack you can use... absorb several in sequence you can different features or abilities... they may or may not respawn those spheres so it's a tactical element...

Now you are in an environment that have line of sight, so attacks can be used positively or negatively based on the area... (ie. hide behind something to defend instead of using an ability.... destroy an environment to impact an enemy...).... and you do all of this in 3rd person mode... you control the camera, or lock and unlock to an enemy w/ or without camera lock...

And behind the combat / mission mode, is a story of post war canon, w/ the lost memories cliche and try to remember what you did wrong in the before you got cryogenically slept life that makes your current life so riddled with enemies genre...

And you level up I guess....some small RPG elements thrown into the mix.

Felt the FMVs were realtime though...

That's more or less correct. There is no level up, you just gain more powers (not more powerful, just more choice) and have the hability to create more than one arsenal but that's it.
Some FMVs are realtime, some are prerendered.
Awesome game, some of the graphics are the best I'be ever seen on current generation hardware, but it could be topped by some scenes in Oddworld Stranger.

It's an amazing game.

Seriously, one of the best on the Xbox, and I haven't even played it on Live.

Tons of customization in the arsenals, plenty of variety in the skills, and it's actually pretty fast-paced.

Yep, it's very hard to explain how to play the game on a forum but once you have done the 10 minutes tutorial it's really natural and very different from anything else.
Kudos to team Tree and Yukio Futatsugi for creating such a game, and a big f*** you to Shane Kim for not putting MS Redmond's support behind the american release, especially after the devs lots of changes to the game look so it would be "more appealing" to americans. Thanks so much for this strange (should I say stupid ?) character design !

Are there any shots of the original character designs floating around?
I don't think the original character design has ever been shown. The first shots of the game (september 2003) already have the current design.
Phatsaqs: I was wondering what kept you :D Now we just need novery and this thread will be complete !

The gameplay in the demo really confuses me, but the atmosphere and artistic design make me want to play it some more. I wish I understood anything at all. I'm definitely going to look into it when it's released here.

YARRRRRR!!! ;)

Seriously, I've played it too; was very turned off by the Japanese demo, but after playing the actual game (which plays in 100% English already), I've changed my mind.

Phantom Dust is a very different kind of "deathmatch" game. IMO the pacing is a bit on the slow side, but the customization and great atmosphere make up for it.

All I can do is thank Majesco for bringing this to the States after Microsoft dropped it. The game looks great, and from what I have already read on this thread, it plays that way as well. Definetly going to pick it up.

Clocking in!

Anyway, it's going to be absolutely fascinating to watch Japanese and American players compete online. Their respective play styles are so different and I think a lot of Americans will be pissed at how passive the Japanese play.

But on the other hand, Americans might not even get a chance to battle Japanese players. There's only 2500 registered Phantom Dust players on Xbox Live, including Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong.

And here's a cool clip of Xbox Live gameplay: http://xboxphreaker.com/phantomdustlive.wmv

I'm just going to go ahead and say it: Microsoft is STUPID for not having brought this game over to the States. :)

I cannot agree with you more. It was already in freaking English. Just convert it to NTSC/US and bring the damn thing over here, but I guess it wasn't worth the effort. Now Majesco can laugh all the way to the bank. Hell, Majesco even picked up Psychonauts which Microsoft was stupid enough to drop as well. They are surely making a name for themselves.

Thanks for the vid...

You're right, the game is much slower than one would assume.

Wow, that video was awesome! Thanks for posting it.

I especially love how destructive the environment seems to be. Are there a bunch of different maps?
There's 7 different maps total. 6 of which have 3 different variations each (Palace, Highway, Lane, Panorama, City, Refinery). The variations are mainly visual such as nightime, daytime, etc. but some of them have slight structural differences as well.
