Philly man lied about kidnapped child to make police 'work harder' to find his stolen car

A 22-year-old Philadelphia man was charged with making a false report after he allegedly lied to police that a 4-year-old boy was in the back seat of his stolen Ford Escort to make officers "work harder" to find the car.

Marcus Fletcher, of the 5800 block of North Hope Street, told police that he was a pizza delivery driver and about 10:35 p.m. Monday his vehicle was stolen at gunpoint in the 4600 block of North Sydenham Street in the city's Logan section. His two assailants also took his wallet with ID and credit cards, a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, and $30 cash.

Fletcher told police his 4-year-old nephew was in his green 1995 Ford Escort. Police conducted an intense search and soon found the car parked, locked, and unoccupied in the 4300 block of North 16th Street.

Detectives then interviewed Fletcher, who gave conflicting accounts of the robbery and was unable to provide a detailed description of the child or his parents.

Police said Fletcher finally admitted that he lied about the nephew. He told detectives he had been robbed before and was unsatisfied with the resulting investigation, according to a police statement, "therefore he made up the aforementioned story to watch the police work harder."

Officers searched the immediate area by ground with K9 and in the air with helicopters, when they believed the child was still missing.

Fletcher allegedly told police that he offered to watch the child for friends, and that he picked him up earlier in the night at Broad and Erie streets.

Investigators say the man's story kept changing and didn't quite add up.

That's about the only way the police are going to help you find your car.

It probably helps if you're white and your car that got stolen is a $50k plus late model car and not a 1995 ford eacort.

This guy maybe could have made up a story about his $20k coin collection being in he trunk and maybe they would have worked a little harder. I don't know how much effort they would put into figuring out if you were lying about that, but I think you could just say you bought all the coins over time in cash and didn't keep the receipts.

I understand that the idea that they arent going to assign a detective to hunt it down and that is frustrating...

But this is so over line, what a fool lol

What about the $30 cash?
And the Samsung S7 Edge?

Hope they found those too, because that $30 is probably worth more than his car.

Police generally won't search for a car, as far as I've been told. It'll be listed as stolen so it comes up on a plate check and stuff, but realistically they can't do much more than that.

He should have told them he had 4 lbs of drugs in his backseat, they would have worked just as hard to find his car. And they would have let him go! Maybe. I may not have completely worked this through.
