I think the best horror movies are not necessarily those well made or with the most gore, or the best story and acting, but the ones you can meta the shit out of, alone or with your friends.
Being 10 and daring your pal to say "candyman" five times in front of a mirror at night during sleepover. Watching Nightmare on helm's street one day, then trying to stay awake all night every night the following week cause you never know when Freddy's going to strike.
I had to sleep under my blankets without moving or making a noise for most of my childhood so that Jason wouldn't notice me, if he were to come... Good times

My favourite Scary Movie? Probably the first one. The second one did have people being rolled up and smoked though, plus freaky man nipples and “Let me use my strong hand”.

The Shining is a close #2 but it's obviously the better film. There are so many creepy hidden gems, double meanings, metaphors, and conspiracy theory details in each and every scene. Kubrick was a genius.




In terms of general, casual enjoyment I like SLASHERS! Halloween (original), Friday the 13th Jason Lives, A Nightmare on Elm Street (original), Child's Play 1 and 2. I know none of those movies are actually "scary" but I could watch them any time, any day.

I had been watching Freddy and Jason etc for years and my mom (Late 80s/early 90s i think) said "Want to see a really scary movie?" and popped on Exorcist. Laughed my ass off. I appreciate the film much more now though.
