The missus and I just bought a 4MP Cybershot this weekend... yesterday I surprised her with the DPP-EX50, it's a Sony Dye-sublimation printer that you can hook up to your TV. You can preview pictures on the TV, create slide shows, as well as print directly from the printer which accepts CF and Memory Stick cards.

I'm looking to pick up a regular photo printer now as well... I've narrowed it down to a few choices but came seem to pick a solid winner.. it's either gonna be an HP or an Epson.

On the HP side I have the:
8150
7960

On the Epson side I have the:
R320
R300M

Does anybody have any experience or knowledge of any of these printers? Thanks.

Last year I checked em all out when selecting a printer for my sister.

I don't remember the Epsons at all, but I was biased against them from the start.
The HPs came out as cheap looking, lots of thin plastic panels, and the ink system is inferior to Canon,

I went with the Canon i900D, awesome interface with color screen, memory card readers, and the great Canon ink tank system. Ran us $200 last Chistmas.

You have a dye sublimation printer and you want one of the crappy inkjet photoprinters? Why? I don't even think any of them are worth it at this point, with stores printing your photos on theirs for $.29/photo and all that, let alone the cheap ones.

The missus wants an inkjet color printer, she GETS an inkjet color printer dammit. Photos aren't the only thing she wants to be able to print in color from the computer. Sorry I should have made that part clear, this wouldn't just be for printing photos which she'll do with this printer and the dye sublimation printer. As much crap as she buys for me I like to be able to get her stuff that she wants too from time to time...

Ah ok, I see now. That makes more sense.

How is that printer (the dye sublimation one) by the way? My wife would really love something like that, even though it would take a very long time to justify the cost given the price of photo printing at the moment.

In general, I've practically given up on inkjet. I have hated every inkjet printer I've ever owned. They're fragile, they suck up ink like crazy, and they make the paper wrinkle.

r300 is very good. Epson do good fade resistant inks now.

Or how about an all-in-one? They are pretty cheap now, and do copy, scan, print. Some are pretty good.

I hardly ever print anything photo-wise these days. I just burn a quick CD and take them to my local photo lab, or upload them to an online service.

You know what? That printer prints DAMN good looking photos... even with the pitiful one meg Kodak camera I've had for years it printed really good looking prints, I can't wait to see what the printed photos look like from our new 4.1mp camera.

I thought about an all in one and looked at the Epson RX600... but we already have a scanner that she really likes... though it's having some issue with our current XP setup... maybe I will look at that RX600 again.... hmm $349.99 with a $50 MIR at Best Buy....

I've always actually been impressed with my inkjet printers.. current one excluded (a Lexmark I bought dirt cheap. I haven't printed anything noteworthy on it yet -- I am, however, finding the color ink a bit finicky already).

The two last printers I had were HPs, liked'em both, so that's what I'd recommend, although I have heard their quality has dipped. I used to work at Office Depot back when I was in school and our Epson printers always gave us headaches, but that was over five years ago, so the technology is hardly comparable any more. They tend to be more recommended anyhow...

So to sum up, I don't know :) ....but frankly, I think the printers with the LCD preview screen are probably a waste.

EDIT: Print-to-CD on the other hand (on the 300M), pretty darn cool.

For photos, I will echo what maharg said. Hard to justify the cost for an inferior and likely more expensive print out of an inkjet printer... but that's another story. Obviously there are plenty of uses for a good, colour home printer... and then there's the instant gratification factor as well...

Um, the R300(M) kicks the crap out of the 8150.

Any reason you don't like Canon? The Pixma IP6000D is a damn fine printer. 179.99. All the new Pixmas also have included duplexers, even on their $100 models... pretty swank.

No don't know anything about Canons but I'll check out that model. Thanks.

We just bought an Epson Stylus CX5400. It scans (and does one-touch photocopies, no PC needed) as well as printing very nicely. Actually I've printed several full page photos, and you can't even tell they're printed until you really close to them (say around 6 inches). Amazing quality for the price.

Do a forum search over at dpreview. Things such as speed, detail, colour accuracy, cost of consumables, and what types of media it accepts are all things to be considered. Is there any reason you're counting out Canon? I just got a new Canon printer and I am very happy with it. :)

As I said I'm not really counting them out just haven't seen much about them. What model is yours?

I believe the IP5000 is the best under $200. It has high ass printing resolution 9600x2400. I assume you want the screen and shit on the printer though, which is why I recommended the IP6000 because its still pretty kick ass. It doesn't have super high res, but kind of makes up for it with the extra color cartridges.
