Update: Nintendo confirms no DL required for physical Switch 2 Edition Games (the OG Switch game and the upgrade pack are on the same cart)

No you cannot. How did you possibly get that idea from this?
Yes you can, if you use your switch account on both systems you'd be able to play the game on your original switch and use the upgrade pack+cartridge on switch 2
Maybe you missed that Nintendo allows your account on 2 systems and the ability to transfer digital games between your consoles.
Not to be confused with the ability to lend your digital games to someone else for a period of 2 weeks.

So, how exactly does it work?

Will I be able to use my normal BoTW cartridge and then be prompted to download the upgrade off the store?

lol, so now you can't even sell your switch 2 "physical" copy anymore, since the switch 2 upgrade code is already used. you can only sell the cart as a switch 1 game

More misinformation..

Switch 2 Edition Updates are ON THE CART according to Nintendo UK.

I didn't watch the video, does this mean you can use the same cartridge on both consoles or does it effectively make it a NS2 version.
I liked the idea for a separate code but this would be even better.

This is not a digital game though, it's a digital upgrade for a physical game. Can that be transferred?

Either way, in what way is this "nice", as if it's somehow better than a physical game card that can be played on as many units as you like?

Yes i understand, my train of thought was that if you own a Switch and a Switch 2 it's possible to play the game on both systems.
But i saw the video in this thread that clarified that the upgrade is on the cartridge, now i'm wondering if crossgen games like these will be playable on both systems with the same cartridge

Hmm well, that's better if true. And yes, good question if it's still compatible with the original Switch. The text on the case specifically says that it includes the Switch game and the Switch 2 upgrade pack, like those are separate things.

That wasn't specified buy if I had to guess its not a red Switch 2 card because those are exclusive to Switch 2. It's most likely a Switch 1 card with the upgrade already loaded onto it so that when you put it on a Switch 2 it automatically runs at higher performance.

Yeah i eventually watched the video, the way you're explaining it would be the ideal situation

Yeah they made it very confusing with their wording.
I tried to printscreen and crop the relevant part of the video so you can see for yourself.

Yeah, I watched it. This is yet another example of incredibly poor communication from Nintendo then. Why would they put that text on the box that it contains the Switch game and the Switch 2 upgrade? Of course people are going to get confused. If it's simply the Switch 2 version, don't even mention the original Switch version!

True, people love to jump to negative conclusions these past days but this one is really on Nintendo, if they wrote "NS2 upgrade included on cartridge" we wouldn't be discussing this right now.

Glad this turned out to be bullshit. I will actually get the Switch 2 Edition of Metroid Prime 4 then instead of getting the Switch 1 version and downloading the update, even if there is that hideous banner obscuring like a third of the box art.

Switch 2 games in general also do not have anything on cartridge. Only a code.

This is only true of select third party games. All first party games revealed so far and some third party games (like Cyberpunk) are fully on the game card.

Also, the games that aren't on the card are not a download code but rather a physical cartridge that triggers a download. This distinction is meaningful, because these "game keys" can be resold, lent out, or gifted after they're used, unlike download codes.

Also, it turns out that the thread title is 100% wrong and the Switch 2 upgrades *are* on the game card. See the mod update to the OP.

So, yeah, a lot of what people have been saying about this topic is just completely fucking false.

I'm talking about the Switch 2 regular games. Though I guess it's not all of them.

Yes, that's what the first part of my post was talking about too. It's only select third party games so far. And, like I said, even those games can be resold and lent out and they will still work, unlike a download code.

The Switch 1 was plagued by third party games that were just a download code in a box, so this is a way of addressing that

Such a wild amount of terrible takes, ignorance, and dishonest dialog going around about Switch 2.

BotW is the most hated game of all time and also one of the most loved. Nintendo is unfortunately the same.

Nintendo, they are trying to come for you because they hate you. Most of these aren't fans. They are haters pretending to be concerned. Keep the path. Change nothing. The console and the games are highly desired and will sell like hotcakes for decades to come, so don't cave to fake fans.

I don't know why but I've got a sneaky feeling this is a potential exploit method for hackers to run unsigned code on a game key card, depending on how that initial load works.

Would be funny seeing as they're trying to solve a problem that didn't exist with these things.

Good thing to see Nintendo is doing things to confuse people already.

I absolutely love Nintendo but this is a really cheap move especially considering the price of the games.

Looked deeper into. Apparently partly true. They need to do a better job of clarifying.
They were pretty clear about it. They explained that there two types of games, normal cartridges (which will have the game on it) and key cards (which will not have the game on it but will act as physical edition of sorts so that you can still sell or borrow it)

Physical games haven't been healthy for a while now, poorly made cases and covers, large installs, no instruction manual booklets, still get scratched and really for a few gens now Nintendo thinks they're being different with carts instead of discs.

Switch games have a huge hit rate of actually having the data on the cart. Vast majority of them you can play offline.

Sony are middling, I think they're flirting with the idea of abolishing physical.

Microsoft are the worst, they're going full steam ahead with it. Even the collectors editions of their games come with an empty steelcase and a code.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this recent clarification from a lowish-level Nintendo support employee is going to turn out to be false. The game boxes go way out of their way to specify otherwise. They say "Switch game" and "Switch 2 Upgrade Pack" in tiny print at the bottom. If all of it was on there on the card, there'd be no tiny print needed at all.

Side observation: The little gift card looking things you can buy for the Zelda games specifically say "Upgrade Pack" right on them.

You have to be a special kind of person to come up with this response.
Why believe anything anyone says, everybody is lying except when someone says what you wanna hear.

I mean honestly that is the dumbest shit I have ever heard if that's truly the way it'll work, makes zero sense
People are just straight up lying at the moment, the NS2 announcement really broke some ego's around here and there's not enough copium to go around for everyone

Alright, i have been a little busy. Do we have 100% confirmation that the Switch 2 versions of Kirby, Mario Party, Zelda all have full content on cart?

I saw UK rep said it was, and an American rep allegedly said it wasn't.

YES / NO — Is the full game on the cart with NS2 Upgrades?

So many Switch 2 threads now and I'm wondering whether it would be worth having one thread for all Switch 2 information (perhaps stickied) rather than a new one every 5 fucking minutes.

Great to hear that Switch 2 editions are on cart! Makes it worth buying them if you don't already own the Switch version. Good for collectors and those who want to resell.

I'll post the screencap from the support mail in the youtube video.
It was very clearly stated that content will be on the cartridge.

I'm going to go with the low-level Nintendo employee answering e-mails on this one.

Because when you look at the fine print on the front of the box, while it specifies that both the Switch 1 game and Switch 2 upgrade pack are included, it does NOT say that an Internet connection is required to access said upgrade pack. Other Switch games that require downloads go far out of their way to make sure you know you are buying content that requires the net to download.

Most likely the Switch 2 upgrade is in a special section or partition on the cart that Switch 1 doesn't use. Switch carts already contain different areas for the base game and any possible updates since the first version of the game (and some other information, like the UI thumbnail).

I understand, and appreciate your answer. This is what I was referencing above. I was looking for a second official verification.

Has anyone else independently confirmed this?

Kind of the opposite? Everyone in the gaming press has been reporting they're Switch 1 carts with a download code inside. But one guy (with a smaller channel and view count) says what YOU wanna hear, so that must be true! BTW it's what I want to hear too, I just am skeptical with the poor information coming from Nintendo this launch.

Shit, even the PR reply if you wanna get really picky, is up for interpretation. If you buy it physically, you get the cartridge and the upgrade is already IN it. In what? The cartridge, or the box? If the PR guy even knows anything for sure. Just saying, grains of salt all around me till I see further clarification (hopefully in the form of a red Zelda card).

Ok let's ignore that i said you hear what you wanna hear.
If you read the mail again it explicitely states that the upgrade is in the cartridge, not the package or case but the cartridge.

I also asked a representative this morning in the US on the Nintendo website.

They told me to "wait for further communication" on enhanced Switch 1 games on Switch 2. I asked if no download was required and everything was on Cart.

Personally, in the end I believe it will ALL BE ON CART. Basic common sense seems to dictate that. But, until we have official confirmation, we wait.

With the China release now being delayed as well, it is starting to feel like everyone will be delayed!

Or at least outside Japan.
