PIRATES - Constructible Strategy Game

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
Decidely low tech offering in the midst of E3....

Anyone else buy these awesome cards? I don't really care about card based games per say (the occasional on console) but I love Pirates and I've been slowly buying packs of this game here and there. Great little system with rarer ships, crew, treasure, etc. There's already been one expansion set and another is set for June.

Really, really cool. I'm putting them all in a box for my nephew when he's a little older.

I have a small armada amassed on my desk here at work. Haven't actually played the game though, but paper pirate ships rule!

they look cool.. i was gonna get some but havent gotten around to it, how does it play etc

The site has a good short animation that explains it. It involves allocating points for ship/crew and then attempting to gather treasure or sink your enemy. There are rarity values for certain ships, etc. I'm mostly just collecting them a bit because I like Pirates but there's some neat pieces and historical basis to a lot of the units.

Haven't played it yet either, but it looks horribly unbalanced from reading the rules. Hopefully that'll turn out not to be the case, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have some and play it from time to time, but I haven't really gotten into the groove.

Heroclix, on the other hand, I play all the time.

I have a decent chunk of them, most from the original set but a couple Crimson packs. The game itself is sort of weak (the original ruleset left much to be desired, there are definite ubercombos) but the ships rock. One of the main designers James Ernest is also the owner of Cheapass games, which is cool because his games are cool.

saw this thread originally and it got me hunting down the game (well, actually not hunting down as it is pretty readily available).

Bought 10 packs total so far. 4 spanish main and 6 crimson coast.

played a couple games so far. the mechanics are great, and while spanish main rules are pretty simple, crimson coast through the addition of an extra ship type (schooner), terrain types, and forts really adds a lot to the game. and I see Revolution which comes out in a couple weeks adds fire among other mechanics (as well as American ships and personalities. WOOHOO!!)

the biggest hurdle with this game seems to be the same hurdle as any collectible game, and that is getting to know the troops a bit better and learning some of the nicer combos out there.

also saw on the wizkids site that they have the spiritual successor to this game, rocketmen coming out in august. probably my favorite genre of all time is the 30's serial sci-fi genre. rocketmen being set in that period and being similar to pirates pretty much guarantees me picking up that.

my only complaint about Pirates is purely aesthetic. and that is all the ships, while painted different, are all based off of only a handful of types. I realize this is both for convenience of manufacturing as well as how it really was back in the age of sail, but still.. something about playing a collectible figures game and really having a wide variety of types of units on the table.
