Playstation Platformers: recommend me a few.

Currently I've been eager to get some old Platform games from the Playstation era. Being a SEGA Fanboy at the time, I only had dabs of Playstation games, playing Crash 2, 3 and Croc over at friends houses.

Anyhow, I've grabbed a couple of old 3D platformers from where I work [Second Hand Store]. Grabbed Croc, Croc 2, Spyro and Spyro 3. I already had a copy of Crash Bandicoot 1, but haven't gotten around to playing it.

Although I have a chipped Playstation, I'd rather stick with PAL games to play on my unchipped PS2. Unless there is something REALLY good I've missed :P

I'd like to pick up Klonoa, but considering the price it'll have to wait. Is Pandmonium any good?

I haven't tried the second Pandemonium, but the first one was quite good when it came out. I don't know how it stacks up now.

I came in here to recommend you Tombi (or Tomba, depending on region) and Jumping Flash.

Tombi!
Tombi! 2
Pandemonium 1 (the sequel is horrible)
Ape Escape
Jumping Flash
Jumping Flash 2

That's everything you'll need

Definitely hunt down a copy of Ape Escape. That was my favourite platformer during the whole PSOne era. I even enjoyed it more than Mario 64

I was very dissapointed with Ape Escape 2 though. Bought it, finished it, sold it.

I'll be grabbing the Rayman GBA port when that anniversary special comes out [with Rayman Advance and Rayman 3 GBA for $40AU]

Tombi! seems to go for SHITLOADS on Ebay, stuff that for the moment :P

Try Pandemonium 2. The level design (while begin more psychedelic in looks) is ALOT better than in Pandemonium 1.

(those are great semi-3d platformers, like Tomba and also Klonoa. Those were the best on PS1)

In 3D platformers you HAVE to play Jumping Flash 1 and 2 + Gek Enter the Gecko.

Action(adventure) platformers -- Castlevania Symphony of the night = one of the best game evar. Try also Castlevania Chronicles if you fall on it.

If you want some more action, tackle on Strider. Many haterz here i think but the game is good. (just a bit short and on the easy side but so fun!)

NO, don't do that. Play the original Rayman (either PSX, Saturn, or -if it runs- PC).

The GBA version is a mere shadow of the original. Lots of lost graphical charm and completely ruined audio. The originals are MUCH better.

Was Enter the Gecko the Second or Third Gex game?

How was Gex One anyhow?

Enter the Gecko is Gex 2 and the best of the 3.
First Gek was not bad but play the first Rayman instead, it shits all over it.

Really? I thought I heard good things about the original GBA port.

Still, wasn't Rayman 3 GBA considered to be really good?

Oh, it's still a good game. It just loses a whole lot.

It's like hearing good things about a Gameboy Color port of a SNES game or something. Even if the GBC version was solid, it would still fail to compare to the SNES original for a number of reasons. This holds VERY true here.

Rayman is a really cool game, so don't ruin your experience by playing the GBA version first. Seriously, it's worth finding the console versions.

Rayman III GBA is pretty decent, though, as it is a 2D game (unlike the 3D console version).

I didn't play the GBA version, but Rayman for PSOne is pretty damn good. It's really TOUGH though, like ghouls n' goblins. I think if you want to actually beat the game, you have to collect all of those sparkley things. I forget what they're called.

A little off-topic, am I the only one who thought the psx/sat rayman was really hard? I remember having to find every one of the cages to open the final levels, plus I think you had to stockpile lives and continues or you were screwed. I enjoyed it a lot, but I wonder if some people were put off by the challenge (since the market for the game was likely younger people)

EDIT: Wow, amazing that we were thinking the same thing at the same time

Yep, Rayman the first is a tuff game really. Especially the last tierce of the game i would say.

You need Punky Skunk. He's a Generation-X skunk with a way-cool attitude, man. You can't argue with that kind of awesome box copy.

By the way, I don't think Rayman PSX is hard to find in the US at least (I think someone said this earlier)

There are nine copies of it at ebgames.com for 2.99 (minus at least 15%)

Rayman

EDIT: You can disregard this, I wasn't paying attention (you're looking for PAL stuff)

You got to play Tomba 1 & 2.

Also check out Johnny Bazookatone. Quite an old game but I remember it as being quite fun, but easy.

I love threads like this cause I typically discover a game I go out and buy used and like :)

I'd second Jumping Flash, graphics may have aged but its just a certain type of fun i've not found anywhere else :D

Give Malice a try. Its not a turd like the reviwes make it out to be. Its a simple but fun/short 5 hour,$20 dollar platformer. Though to be honest I only own the Xbox version. I liked it pretty well.

oops-sorry,I thought you meant PS2 platformers.

The 2 Jumping Flash games, Rayman, Klonoa, Castlevania: SOTN, and the first Tomba and all good.

Ape Escape, Pandamoneum, and Pandamoneum 2 are worth trying.

Everything else is meh.

Except for Bubsy 3D. That's below meh.

I was going to recommend you the Spyro games, even though the series has taken a turn for the worst now. the only thing left for you to get is Tombi and Tombi 2. It was probably one of my favourite games for PSX, loved it to bits. Quite a few people have recommended it, so its not just me who is saying that its good.

Below average game...but it was Phil Hartman's final performance. So it's got some merit. Plus, it's got kind of a Earthworm Jim-ish humor thing going for it.

Say...was Earthworm Jim 2 ever released for PSX? If so, then I'd also recommend that.

my recommendation? Hermie Hopperhead.

IMO, Pandemonium 1 is still a modest but great game. The second went "teh machure" and sucked.

Also, the Jumping Flash series is frickin' great all the way through. I'd love a new installment.

I've got just about every Rayman game made, and both the PSOne and GBA games have a lot to offer, imho. PSOne game is better. Better music, better graphics, better view-distance (GBA game is cropped too much, turning some difficult jumps into true leaps of faith.) However, the GBA game is a bit easier than the PSOne version, and, of course, portable.

Heart of Darkness is f-cking awesome, and a completely different kind of platformer. More like a platform/puzzle/adventure game than a straight up 2D platformer like Rayman.
