Please explain this to me

Why does America and Canada continue to prosper where else Mexico still remains poor? One might think if logic is applied here, Mexico should be prosperous too just like its northern neighbours.


It just doesn't make sense, Has the man been keeping them down?
 
ex-British colonies vs. ex-Spanish colony?

The question itself seems kinda retarded though. NAFTA aside, why should the fact that these countries are all located on the same continent means they should have developed at the same rate economically? There is no "logic" being applied in saying that "Mexico should be prosperous too just like its northern neighbours." :P

A serious answer would probably be a combination between Political stability/efficiency and natural resources. I do think that the different relationships the countries had with their former "Mother" countries may be an interesting factor as well though.
