so recently i started commuting to work using the subway (nyc) and i find myself out of my mind bored on the long rides/delays.

im looking for a quality portable video/mp3 player and from the little research i did it came down to:

ipod touch (2nd generation) VS archos 605

i know the touch is common but anyone have the archos?

i was leaning towards the archos but the only thing pulling me towards the touch is the great lineup of features and out of the box browser, which you have to purchase for the archos 605.

the advance the 605 has is the bigger better screen and cheaper price. the 30gb 605 is 230 where as the 8gn ipod touch is 220.

any suggestions guys?

I had the exact same dilemma back in july; I ended up getting the touch. (though back then the 605 was actually more expensive than the touch, so that had some weight in the balance)

The 605 is bulkier than the touch, thus more annoying to carry on you, and the touch generally has the better feature set. After having one, I just can't recommend not getting it. It's an amazing device all around, and it's worth every penny I paid for it. The only gripe is, of course, battery life with videos (6 hours claimed, in truth it's closer to 4 hours), but apparently the 605 isn't much better on that side either.

I'd go with the Touch. The 605 is too bulky for travel, the UI is too cumbersome for easy navigation, despite the resolution and size, the screen quality is lacking (contrast/colors), and the unit has weird cropping issues.

I know you're only looking for a media player, but you can get a phone that can stream music and video from your hard drive over the interwebs for almost nothing with a new phone plan. Not totally on topic but still something to think about.

I have had the 605 for a few months now and I really love it. One of the main reasons I got it (besides it's huge touch screen) was it's ability to make, drag and drop movies/music into Windows folders on the PC, and it remaining in those same folders on the player. Awesome player, great sound. Find a new one on ebay for cheap.

but with a phone, say like G1 or iphone dont you need to purchase the data plan to work with the phone?

if i am spending close to 250 dollars on a player i do not want to have to pay extra for phone service. i barely/rarely use my cell and have a very basic plan per month.
