PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
A man who Portland police call the "Hipster Bandit" is finally in custody.
Portland police detectives said 40-year-old Harvie Oglesby III robbed five banks in the city over the course of six months.
On Friday, police caught up to him as he was making his getaway on a bicycle, a police bureau spokesman said.
Oglesby had just robbed the Consolidated Community Credit Union at 2012 NE Sandy Blvd., police said. He used a demand note, obtained an undisclosed amount of money, and then took off, according to witnesses.
Those witnesses gave police a description, and officers arrested Oglesby near Northeast 31st Avenue and Irving Street. Police said they recovered evidence from the bank robbery from Oglesby.
Detectives said Oglesby is responsible for the following four robberies:
- July 19, U.S. Bank branch at 7300 SW Terwilliger Blvd. in Portland
- Aug. 31, Albina Community Bank branch at 5636 NE Sandy Blvd. in Portland
- Oct. 19, Key Bank branch at 3839 N.E. Broadway in Portland
- Nov. 26, Key Bank branch at 3515 SW Troy St. in Portland
Police said they gave Oglesby his nickname several months ago because witnesses from the first robbery told detectives the suspect "looked like a hipster."
Oglesby is being held in the Multnomah County Jail. Federal bank robbery charges are pending.
