Possible problems with the textures in Morrowind, help please.

So I installed Morrowind and its expansions on the new computer, but when I fired it up I noticed that the textures seem to be really low resolution, maybe it's just me but I sure don't remember them like this:

So it this how it's supposed to look, or do I have some sort of problem?

Some system specs, as close as I remember them:

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+
RADEON X800 PRO (Driver 6.14.10.6490)
1.00 GB of Memory, don't know what type and whatnot... it's memory which is good enough for me!
Windows XP with SP2
DirectX 9.0c

You appear to have bilinear filtering on textures, that's ruining/blurring all textures on objects with depth - make sure to set the game up to use at least trilinear ir even better 8x Anisotropic filtering.. Otherwise it's running at 32-bit with (AFAICS) high-res textures. The game used to look fantastic 3 years ago but now it's no longer that eyecandy, I know, but I remember it looked better than this as well..

My guess is that you probably set your card to performance settings instead of high quality and it's defaulting to smaller textures and bilinear filtering.. what card and driver are you using?

A Connect 3D Radeon X800 Pro, as for the drivers I guess it's whatever came with the card... when I check it say:

Driver Version 6.14.10.6490
Driver Details 8.071-041026a-018719C-ATI
Driver Date 10-26-2004

Those are rather outdated, download the newest (5.3) Catalyst drivers from www.ati.com - and make sure to uninstall current drivers before installing these. Not only do they give a neat boost in both D3D and OGL for X800 cards but they also have some new features. Here's a link to the download page: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

If you do not want to do that, open the Control Panel and check the 3D tab to make sure that your card is set up to run at AT LEAST optimal mode and not Performance or High Performance (which use lower mipmap levels, smaller textures and worse texture filtering)

Also, for better IQ make sure to crank the AA up a few notches, 4x should be pretty enough. Disabling high quality shadows can make a huge performance difference on ATI cards in this game, I suggest using simple shadows and high AA.

Yeah, doesn't it look so much better? :)

I wish I could do that, but my 9800XT can't handle the game at more than 4xAA 16xAF at 1280x1024 :)
