ok, yeah, I'm already feeling so anxious about this! I have a bubble-like formation on my gum, and taking antibiotics as well as keeping it clean with PerioMed and flossing hasn't gotten rid of it.

Well, I finally got it looked at last Friday and the dentist said 'it looks like a root canal'. I'm looking at her like 'are you shitting me lady?!'

Anyway, so she refers me to an endodontist... I go through the yellow pages and find one; tomorrow morning I'm going for another check-up. THey will tell me if it is a root canal a for sure.

Hopefully they can numb the hell out of me. I'd like you guys to share your experiences, but I fear someone telling me how painful their experience was :lol . ARGH! Oh, and can you take someone in with you while they're performing a procedure on you?

My dentist in FL (I'm in DE right now)... I asked the receptionist if one of my family members could sit-in, and she started to tell me no... but the dentist heard me asking and said it was ok (dad's a doctor, and he knows him, so I got away with it). So uh, yeah, I'm wondering now.

Except for t he initial shot to the gums (Weird feeling... feels like you get shocked), there's no pain.

I also asked for nitrous... because though it doesn't hurt... having someone carve out your tooth isn't very comforting. You'll start thinking about weird shit and not even realize what's going on with nitrous.

It's a horrible experience and I hope you have a better time then I did. My dentist didn't freeze my mouth at all but only half the roots were dead so I felt the whole thing and while sitting there screaming he asked me sarcastically if I wanted some freezing or not and of course I said yes.

It's been 6 years now since I've so much as called a dentist and I need to go back but that experience scared me for life.

Hah I'd walk out immediatly if a dentist didn't give a me a shot. 1000 bucks you better do as I ask.

wow, didn't he numb you first??
i'll be sure to tell mine to inject away...i think they start off with a swab that numbs you a bit, then they inject you with the good stuff.. though you can feel the needle going in, weird sensation.

When I had a root canal done the worst parts were being bored (despite the tv overhead) and my jaw being sore from being open for so long.

And the bill, even with insurance. That probably hurt the most.

It's not that it hurts, but it's just so damn uncomfortable. You hear the damn sounds of drilling, the huge black plate thing they put into your mouth is sooo uncomfortable, and then sometimes you get a little snip of pain when they're poking around your roots.

Theres no pain...but the taste of crushed tooth enamel you wont forget.

wow dude thast pretty shitty, I've never had a root canal with out being numb.

Go under if you can.

I haven't ever had to have one, but what a bitch it is just going to the dentist in general. Hell, I'd like to do most things sleeping.

I'm going to have around three root canals done this year, and I'm going to have an IV sedative, which is all good because the last time I had an IV sedative I tripped out. I felt like Jodie Foster in Contact. I was flying through wormholes and shit.

Having root canal done was not a big deal, I didn't feel anything, other than my jaw being sore after keeping my mouth open for an hour. Well, the idea that they were basically killing the tooth felt a bit nasty, but other than that it was surprisingly easy.

It's not bad at all like most have stated. Definitely take the gas though because it will make you feel like a million bucks :lol . Also you can ask if your dentist will let you bring an IPOD/cd player in with you. My dentist was the one that suggested that to me so I'm sure most of them do not mind. It can help clear your mind during the process. :)

I just had my first one last week. The needle hurt a little, but the root canal itself doesn't hurt much once you're numb... what hurts is the soreness afterward, and your wallet (even with insurance).

The worst part during the procedure was the taste, and being forced to inhale the smoke from the drill because you can't breath through your mouth. But all of it is better than the toothache I had.

Speaking of which, I just had a deep scaling cleaning done today to get rid of some stubborn bacteria. They numbed the hell out of my mouth and then proceeded to clean it. With a drill thing. After that, they started picking away some plaque but I could feel a twitch of pain everytime my hygenist scrapped my gums. Apparently, she didn't inject the anthesetic (sp?) in the right places so I had sensation in several areas. It was not very painful but it wasn't very fun. She also took a tiny chunk of my gum during the scrapping process. Fortunately, it's not too noticable, but still....stupid woman...

floss and brush after meals is your friend. Don't you wish you should've listened to your
parents?

As for me, I go through this routine of floss, brush, waterpik, and dental checkups every 5 months.

What!?! your dentist should have given you a drug that makes it so you can't remember anything before putting you under and begining surgery. Either you are lying (not likely) or you DDS doesn't know what he's doing.

Anyway, before you decide on a specialist to do the root canal (though a general dentist should be able to do it just fine) make sure you check them out with your states dental board, they probably have aplace where you can check thier history (complaints, graduation date licensure date, etc.) online.

Had my first root canal a few months ago. The only pain I felt was during the injection to numb part of my jaw. After that, though I kept shivering thinking of the unspeakable things that my dentist was doing to my tooth, I didn't feel any pain at all. My wallet was hurt badly though.

yeah I went in for another consultation and this lady actually tested my tooth unlike the last greedy whore! The last one took one X-Ray and was like 'It LOOKS like you need a root canal, so I'm gonna refer you to...' What's with referrals in this state?

So, yesterday, I went in, I think she popped the abscess cuz it seems kinda flat when I got home :lol Anyway, she took something cold, it was in a little cotton ball thingy, and put it on my regular tooth.. I could immediately feel the cold sensation. Then she put it on that tooth with the abscess directly on it... 5-10 seconds go by and I didn't feel a thing. Guess the nerves dead! Yay! The lady said the abscess was full of puss and that I was ingesting it as well to which I said 'That's nice...'

What makes me really mad... is that 5 years ago, I went to this dentist who claimed I had 5 cavities.. FIVE! So, I let him work on one or two. Then, my dad found the other dentist and I went to him and told him that the last guy's telling me I had five cavities. He examines my mouth and tells me the other dentist was overtreating me. So, for all I know, my tooth was just fine and that ****er messed with it. I guess fillings can go awry, like mine has, and now I need to get a root canal done. $1050. Christ! FOR ONE TOOTH. This is insane man.

Oh well. Monday at 3:15p.m. Wish me luck Gaf. I want to live. Oh, and they don't have the nitrous mask thing. So, he's just gonna have to numb the shit out of me. Plus, I called so many dentists here, they all want me to go to an endodontist since it's a molar tooth. A regular dentist won't touch it. And this lady dentist referred me to the same endodontist that the last one (on Friday) was referring me to.

what if they feel me up while i'm out?

p.s. can a friend or someone go in with you while they're working on your teeth?

I've had a root canal. The intial pain from the shot and the procedure are very minimal. Most of the pain comes after the procedure is done.

My root canal was a cake walk. I just laid there while listening to The Cars Greatest Hits CD, while almost falling asleep.

"Let the good times roll."

:lol

I had mine done when I was in the third grade, so I don't really remember anything about it other than it hurting when they put the needle in my gums.
