i want some poutine so bad. living in the US i've never had the chance to experience the joy of poutine.
Ahhh man, it's the #1 reason I don't want to leave Quebec, and I'm serious.

so, just to clarify, it's french fries, cheese, and gravy?
it sounds great to me. looks like a variation of the whole "chili cheese fries" theme

I love Fritz's poutine.

It is indeed french fries, curd cheese and a special sauce.

I think curd cheese is not even legal outside of Canada since it is considered an "unfinished" milk product. I heard stories about that before, don't really know if there's any truth to it.

lots of smaller cheese artisans in the u.s. sell cheese curds, but i don't think they're widely available.

i'll say this for poutine: it's not a pretty food. that's sort of endearing though. i appreciate grub food--nobody's ever going to look at hamburger helper and say it belongs on a gourmet plate, but damn if it ain't tasty.

I agree with the opinion that it doesn't really "look" good. However, that taste is awesome. The sound of fresh cheese curds in my mouth makes me dream at night.

This though...

That's disgusting. :lol

Well, that was made by La Belle Province. It was already disgusting before being made.

...... I would still eat that.......

Curds are very popular in some states, like Wisconsin. The closest thing we have to it in general is Cottage Cheese.

I would love to try Poutine some day. Sounds yummy.

Closest thing I've seen in NJ is known as "disco fries"... just fries, gravy, and usually mozzarella, although you can sub that for American cheese.

And yeah, it's outstanding.

been so long since ive eaten a real poutine :( (most places around here dont use curds)

i really doubt it tastes gross. the flavor profile makes total sense and should be intimately familiar to most people in the states: we've been eating potatoes, cheese, and brown gravy in the form of mashed/baked potatoes for ages. poutine just presents it as a fast food and suddenly it's inedible?

Jesus Christ :lol

I honestly have no idea how La Belle Province is still in business. Their food is disgusting. Stratos and Ashton = poutine heaven.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT try to make a poutine with Cottage Cheese. Ever. :lol

Poutine is spectacular. Burger King's poutine (not sure if all of Canada has it but it's certainly here in New Brunswick) is a gift from god.

Edit: Also if you ever go skiing at Val D'Irene (just past Amqui, Quebec), they have some superb poutine. God bless the French for deciding to put gravy and cheese curds on top of french fries.

:lol Yeah, I wouldn't do it. I might try to do something with some Mozzarella maybe. What sort of gravy should I use?

The problem about poutine with most restaurants is that they keep a great deal of cheese in the refrigerator. Curd cheese is good ONLY ON THE DAY IT WAS MADE.

That's what really makes it difficult to import good poutine, french fries and gravy is no problem, but good cheese is hard to come by in a lot of regions. In the region of Centre-Du-Québec, there are a lot of good "fromageries" that make awesome curd cheese.

My favorite is Fromagerie Lemaire in St-Cyrille (near Drummondville). Their cheese is heaven in a plastic bag.

Along with Harvey's, Schwartz's, General Tao's chicken and burgers from this awesome place in Montreal the name of which escapes me now, poutine is among the things I miss most about Canada.

There was a place off St Catherine street that used to make an awesome poutine with extra mince meat. Heavenly.

Gah, I'm drooling now.

Probably smoked meat? Smoked meat poutine, or "Italian" poutine (same, except instead of gravy its spaghetti sauce), are very good.

EDIT: For those who don't know, this is smoked meat:

It's soooooooooo good! I just hate eating it like that cause it's too big. I prefer to just put it in a plate and pick with a fork.

Is smoked meat what they call pastrami in Canada?

God Poutine is amazing, many fond memories of ultimate. There was an article in the times about places around the city that started making real poutines, now I need to go try them out. L71 supposedly piles pork belly on top of the fries and gravy :D

Believe me ... poutine is never going to 'look' good ... but damn does it taste great!! :D

I haven't had it since going to the last TIFF a few months back. There was a street vendor (it was actually a large converted delivery truck with a full kitchen) that just sat in front of our hotel in Toronto every night. It was some tasty slop!

Never had it, or even heard of it before this thread. Looks nasty but sounds pretty tasty. I'll try it if I ever get the chance.

Just make it yourself. Not that difficult.

Smoked meat isn't the same as pastrami. I don't know the specifics, but they taste very differently.

Montreal has some of the best places to eat in the entire continent. :) Very fine cuisine coupled with some of the craziest good tasting fast food makes it heaven.

God I love living here :)

And word to the wise: poutine with mozzarella is pretty meh. You need the type of cheese curds we make here - the texture is a huge part of what makes a poutine so good. Mozzarella only spreads everywhere and doesn't have the correct texture.

I dated a Canadian bitch for 6 years.
Also, New York Fries is hilarious, because it's only in Canada. And your Taco Time isn't the real Taco Time. They just license the name.

NYF has the greatest fries, and I love the fact that it's Canadian.

I wonder where in New York, I could get the type of fries made at New York Fries.. mwhahaha.

This thread wasn't what I expected at all.

One of these days, I'll cross the border and try this stuff.

I'm not saying their fries are bad, but it's just funny. I think my favorite fries are at Weinerschnitzel.

Pfft.. poutine.. :lol

Down here in AZ the mexican restaurants serve fries with meat, cheese, onions and peppers all topped with sour creme and guacamole and hot sauce if you want it.

BTW - What the hell is with terming it 'smoked meat' anyway? That is such a generic, and confusing term.

No idea, maybe because it's Jewish in origin they didn't have to label the meat cause it clearly wasn't chicken and it sure couldn't be pork:p
