Powermac HTPC or DVD Player ??

I have been offered a 4/500mhz G4 Powermac, with 256megs of ram with a dvd drive for quite cheap, well, roughly the price of an oppo digital DVD player (www.oppodigital.com).

I have a Panasonic AE700 projector, with VGA/HDMI inputs, and I don't have a progressive dvd player to push it. I have fiddled with XBMC but the dvd support is flakey, and a 720p picture looks ok, but dim and it has framerate problems.

Would I be better to go with the Powermac or the DVD player ? I know which one is going to give me less hassle, but I'm more concerned about picture quality. Whats the HTPC scene like on the Mac front ? If I did get the DVD player I could still use the xbox for all other 'video files'.

Thanks.

I've been on the fence as far as getting a new DVD player since there's so much on the horizon (HD-DVD, Blu Ray etc.). I feel like whatever I get now will be a stop gap, and nothing more.

Plus I hear that the upconverting DVD players aren't all that.

XBMC for now, although it doesn't seem to play all my (retail) DVDs for some reason. Sometimes it freezes, sometimes it doesn't do shit. But damn the movies looks so good when they do run.
