Powerslave Appreciation Thread

OK. So I have never done an appreciation thread before, mainly because I don't appreciate anything (that doesn't have a Sega logo or come with lube). However this new SS emu got me back into some shit and honestly, in my view, Powerslave (aka EXHUMED in UK aka 1999 in JP) was just well ahead of its time for its era on console. Awesome atmospherics, genius level design, astonishing game engine (thanks Ezra) and awesome soundtrack (which I am now listening to thanks to persuaion to dig into some old SS games to use on new Emu). I thought this game was simply miles better than Quake, Duke, etc, and simply the best FPS adventure of its generation (on console), by miles, miles and fucking miles. Yet barely anyone remembers it. Please prove me wrong.
Please NAME THESE DEVELOPERS RIGHT HERE.

Lobotomy Software. Nobody remembers it because it was an awful game.
Hardly. It wasn't the greatest thing ever, but it was pretty fucking nice, IMO. I remember the first time I saw this game (E3 '96) and as I'm playing it in the Playmates Interactive booth, this guy, who looks A LOT (:lol) like Dave Perry asks me what I think of it. I reply, 'Looks really good!' He shakes his head and says, 'Really?! I think it looks very poor with all of that graininess.' or something like that and then walks off. I bought the game when it released, and in addition to it being a terrific version of the Build engine, with a lot of nice, Saturn-specific additions, the gameplay and atmosphere was pretty damned solid. The inclusion of the original Death Tank was the icing on the cake.

A fucking men. Sorry, I just have a militant hard-on for this title; a serious conterder for one of SS's "games of era" as far as I'm concerned - at least from non-first-party camp. Plain awesome in every respect.

Its still one of my favorite fps to this day. Thegame looked great, ran pretty damn smoothly, had great music, good stage designs, had some nice exploratory designs(those little artifact dolls that were spread around lead to opening up a mini game I believe?) The further you got into the game the cooler it got. I stil have nightmares of swimming in those dark waters with those deadly piranhas after you. The game was really a good one,and I still hate that Lobotomy never got enough respect for this game back in their day.

Btw-did anyone ever own the PSX version? A friend of mine had it,it looked pretty much the same, which looked great all around. I only played the first stage and did notice that they added a few new enemies that weren't in the Saturn version. For example you ran across spiders in the first stage in the Saturn version. The Sony version had red scorpions. I wonder if there were further changes between both platforms.

Indeed. I can't think of another game (aside from Death Tank Zwei and Bomberman SS, anyway) that I would be able to convince myself of spending about $200 for all of the extra controllers and two mutitaps again for. And just so I could have friends and coworkers come over and play several nights a week. God, I love love love love the Saturn.

The Sony version was crap. Just crap.

I loved Powerslave.

I remember being on a quest to get the Team Dolls so I could have the Vulture & Dolphin abilities, and then being blessed with Death Tank.

When I got the Doll on the invisible bridge underneath the ultra thin platform on the level of death... that was just a moment for me.

(Then I ended up like this obv).

Really, why? I only ask because I found a copy of the PS version in mint condition for only ten dollars. I seems pretty rare so I wouldn't mind having it in my collection but not if it isn't enjoyable.

It plays fine, I guess. Visually, the game trades the solidity and impressively smooth pseudo light sourcing found in the Saturn edition, rock-solid 30fps, Death Tank, and awesome Nights pad-control for very annoying, and very jerky vertex lighting, lots of visible joint seams, an unstable framerate, and, oh, some nice filtering on the textures. The PC edition would be better than the PS1 game, IMO. Still, it should play the same. I could be wrong about something here, but that's exactly how I remember the PS rev.

Because it was better on Saturn. Like everything else. Like DOA for example. Or like the entire fighting genre for example. Or like the entire racing genre for example (until smug fucking KY-san showed up, maybe). Or like the entire floating-around-in-dream-land-through-hoops-genre, for example.

Seriously, Powerslave was better on saturn. As was Dead or Alive... as was... omg time for bed

Edit: oh and anything 2D too.
*bursts out crying*

I remember being floored by Powerslave. Lobotomy just knew how to get the FPS looking good on the Saturn. The lighting and everything. I often said Sega should snap them up, especially once they'd done Quake and Duke Nukem as well. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Lobotomy did all those.)

Whatever happened to that group? Last I heard they were on some casino game or something.

Playing Death Tank and Death Talk Zwei from Duke 3D with my older brother are some of my only positive memories between he and I.

Powerslave on Saturn was a fucking fantastic FPSer.

It was the inferior PSX / PC versions that were crap.

I have PowerSlave and love it! Correct me if I'm wrong but this game had a tiny print run did it not? (Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radiant Silvergun) What other games on Saturn had a low print run? I want to know if I have them seeing how I have close to 40 Saturn games. :D

P.S. Don't forget some Playstation levels were cut down in size too compared to the Saturn version. (Some maps completely cut out.) Did Goldeneye for the N-64 come out before this or did Powerslave come out first can't remember?

Powerslave was one of the first four Build games announced by 3D Realms back in July 1994. The games were Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior and Ruins: Retrun of the Gods. They only published Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior, Blood was sold to Monolith and Ruins was sold to Playmates Interactive where it became Powerslave/Exhumed.

Yup they carried out the conversion work wonderfullly. Though IMO Exhumed wiped the floor with them both in terms of overall design, but then I suppose they were both "old" games by the time they reached Saturn.
