Presentation on 360 GUI

Didn't see this mentioned anywhere, but it's semi interesting -- some notes from a recent MS presentation regarding their development of the 360 dashboard GUI. A few tidbits, as well as a look at some of the other interfaces MS was considering (eww!):

Hey, Loop looks rather like an evolution of the original Xbox dashboard concept.

But yes, the one we got in the end kicks ass. Thank Zod they made the right call.

Makes me wonder exactly how much research and development goes into the interface of the modern game console. I've never liked the Playstation 2's interface (way too barebones), even though the spinning cubes and crystals looked pretty. Meanwhile, I loved the functionality of the late revisions of the Panasonic 3DO, with its funky CD lightshow (which still looks sweet, btw), and its easy to use interface.

I sort of like Loop but I can easily see one major problem with it. If I push up and down do I rotate around the loop or go to one of those menu options? So I can see why they went with what we got.

Probably varied a lot with the older systems, but the modern stuff requires a significant effort -- there is so much more information to convey. I know MS relies heavily on focus testing, and being very iterative. PS3 seems likely to continue the "media bar" concept the psp uses. Rev... who knows :P.

It would be nice if at some point alternate UIs were made available for download, such that you can swap them out out off the hard drive.

If you look at the XBOX logo it is exploding at the seams. Microsoft wanted to take a new approach with the XBOX360 and used Bruce Lee as the metaphor for this. Bruce takes in energy and uses that internal strength and breath.

First Xbox concept:

"Xbox is like my fists: explosive!"

Xbox 360 concept:

"I'm the soul of Xbox 360! Inspire with me!"

Oh g-d, some of those xboxes were disgusting.

I've always wondered...why do you omit the O?

The Loop looks very futuristic. I think I like it the best.

The loops conceptually is very cool, whether or not it actually works I have no idea.

Revolution's GUI will be better. Mostly due to the RevMote.

Yeah.. J Allard said it himself at GDC last year that the philosophy behind 360 was "Bruce Lee not brute force".. :D

You've never heard about a Graphical User Interface before?

(This being my subtle way of avoiding your making a third post asking what the I is for)

You ruined my Simpsons joke :(
