Prey 2 gameplay video leaked

Sad Cry GIF

If Prey 2017 was the result of this game being sacrificed, I'm A-OK with that.

Prey 2017 is one of my favorite games of all time.
Fair, and it was really good, but I think the "Prey" name was slapped on an already existent project, so I don't really think this game had to go to keep that one alive.

The fact that it looks as good and unique as it does, not only reopens a wound, but also creates a deeper cut.

Much like Deep Down I'd rather this footage moment be the very last time I ever see anything about this game.

This game looks pretty far along. To have an opening and a demo with voice acting...

I guess Bethesda/ZeniMax cancelled themselves in 2014? Was that the beginning of the end?

Well maybe we lost something ... But the reboot of prey was pretty good love it

t sucks that the IP is probably dead....

Prey is one of the strangest series when it comes to complete reboots and restarts. I still remember the pre-hype around the original 3D Realms Prey from like 1998-1999, the one that used a custom engine, and was stuck in perpetual development hell... which was the norm for a 3D Realms game of that era... But, it was secretly rebooted by Human Head studios using ID Tech 4 (The Doom 3 engine) in 2006. yeah that game is completely abandon ware at this point.

This Prey 2 is suppose to be a story continuation. Though you don't play the character Tommy, like in the first game. But Tommy this time is the operator of 'The Sphere' that he gets trapped on in the first game. Which I guess is suppose to be a Dyson's sphere.

I think Human head did day that Tommy was giving out these bounty jobs to some other bounty hunter. As far as I know, this Prey 2 still uses ID Tech 4, but a heavily modified ID Tech 4. It has no mega textures of ID Tech 5. I've seen people mistake this game as an Unreal Engine 3 game. But it is not.

I guess Microsoft owns the Prey rights now, and I feel like the reboot was really just a way to keep the Prey name, for the most part. But the game itself is great.

Saw this behind closed doors at E3 2011.
Together with Dishonored.

They instantly became my absolute most wanted.

I'm still in mourning about it.

It was probably quite plodding and just not that fun.
The game's quality never was an issue. Prey 2 was cancelled because of Zenimax Media -- Bethesda Softwork's parent company -- liked to behave themselves as if they were in the business of organized crime, straight out of an episode of The Sopranos.

Human Head studios would receive further production funds -- aka, their employees' salaries -- from Bethesda only upon them achieving certain development milestones. This kind of contract allowed Bethesda to, at some point, start to withheld payments under the excuse that the game was not meeting their expectations (bullshit), which meant that Human Head had to go back and rework stuff for months out of their own pocket, hoping that the publisher would approve it during the next meeting and then resume the flow of money. That, of course, didn't happen as the goal was to have Human Head ran out of money to the point of having only two choices: go bankrupt or sell the company to Zenimax for dirt cheap.

Unlike Arkane Studios, MachineGames or Tango Gameworks (all of which were "acquired" by Zenimax after being financially choked by them in a similar fashion), Human Head did not give in to Bethesda's extortion and so they parted ways, leading to Prey 2 being shelved.

I wish that fucking cocksucker Robert Altman, Zenimax founder and CEO, had been charged for all the borderline criminal shit that he was responsible of. No wonder his company seeked to screw over John Carmack and Mick Gordon under his command. A truly rotten organization.

Yeah, what ended up being known as Prey (2017) was originally going to be titled Typhoon, as it was very much a new IP that had absolutely nothing to do with Prey other than being first-person and sci-fi.

While I do think that Prey 2017 is a good game, and the closest we'll ever get to a "System Shock-like", I would've loved to play Human Head's version as well. What Bethesda should've done is to let Human Head work on Prey 2 and have Arkane work on what is now known as Prey 2017 and release it under a different name.

Because it was a completely different type of game and I prefer the OG Prey classic shooter. Prey 2017 is exactly what Quake 2 was...they put a popular name on a game that has no tie ins with the last, it should of just been new IP simple as that. I recently watched Carmacs interview and was funny how Q2 stuck...they ran out of time and were supposed to ship the game and they just went fuck it, lets call it Quake 2 lol.

Maybe, but a cyberpunk world that is heavily inspired by Blade Runner's striking city design albeit with an endless boxy sea of handy little well-placed hip-high cover containers dotted across its supposedly pedestrian landscape, looks dreary asf to me.

I don't think Prey 2017 was the result of Prey 2's cancellation. Arkane Studio's was kind of following in the footsteps of Looking Glass Studios. Obviously the Dishonoured series was their version of the original Thief and Thief 2 in many ways. Apparently, Prey 2017 started development under a completely different name called: Project Danielle, which was also an obvious spiritual successor to System Shock.

Allegedly, Bethesda forced Arkane to change the name of their 'Project Danielle' to Prey, just to hold onto the Prey name.

Source of that information here, from an IGN interview with game director: Raphaël Colantonio from 2022...

Wikipedia article:
According to design documents from early in the project's history published by Kotaku, the game was developed at Arkane under the name "Project Danielle".This was later confirmed by Bare, who added that the name was "a little bit of an homage to SHODAN" from System Shock. Three different concepts were presented, all based on the nature of System Shock and involving the player-character named Danielle Sho to find that there was a false reality in their apparent world and dealing with an artificial intelligence that has a significant influence on events; these settings included a futuristic lab set on Earth set just prior to the System Shock time frame, a secret lab on a remote island, and a retro-futuristic setting. Kotaku observed that this final setting was closest to what the released Prey looked like.

The lead director of Prey at Arkane didn't like the name change either, but probably had to roll with it, given that Bethesda axed Prey 2 and had the name freely to use. Prey 2017 was an unrelated game during its' initial planning stages of development. It was never planned to be a Prey reboot.

I know I'm in the minority with my opinion, but this cancelled Prey 2 never felt like a sequel to Prey 2006. That game was one of my favorite and earliest X360 games (still hoping for a remaster). Prey 2 didn't resemble visually the first game, Tommy was not the main character (despite having a cliffhanger ending that I wanted to continue) etc. So I don't really miss this canceled Prey 2. Sidenote, Prey 2017 is also one of my favorite games, though I know it has nothing to do with the other games. I would be really happy for a real sequel for Prey 2006 that continues Tommy's story with similar aesthetic and gameplay.

the indian protag Prey was decent, but Arkane's Prey is a masterpiece. One of the best games ever made, the modern System Shock and looks like some people keep making mods for the game. It clearly has a cult and I'm all in.

Ah yea, I forgot to post in this thread when the videos were out but I saw them before pulled down

I was super hyped for a bounty hunter Prey 2 game back in the days. I was disappointed when it was cancelled

but

Those videos basically put on the table that the devs were creatively at a dead end with the idea? It looked like the equivalent random generator "emergent" open world slop. Think Spider-man car chases in the city, but now with criminals. Done with a hunt? Next random generated NPC is next target, run after it, etc.

I mean, of course that could have been fleshed out if the plug had not been pulled but then I'm thinking, there's not a single bounty hunting game out there dedicated to that I can think of, maybe the idea is not that good. Most bounty hunting gameplay are often just interleaved with a ton of other aspects of a game and just a small part of it.

What also pisses me off is that years later Human Head would crowdfund Rune 2 then do an exit scam at the launch, it was a buggy unfinished game (tbh I did get for free a copy and the gameplay was oddly serviceable) and immediately closed doors, the publisher, Ragnarok Game LLC, learned it through the media news like everybody else, then a day later they refounded the studio as Roundhouse as an Zenimax studio and Ragnarok sued both over breach of contract, sabotage and defrauding, then it was closed down alongside Arkane Austin years later, talk about massive irony.
