Prices for used copies of Xenoblade 2 (and the Torna DLC) have gotten crazy

Physical versions of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna: The Golden Country are getting to be outrageously priced. These games are both out of print now, and with the recent popularity of Pyra / Mythra joining the Smash Bros roster, the price for these carts have skyrocketed.

This was a $40 game when it was new - and new copies included the season pass for XC2. That was 3 years ago. Now

The original game (from 2017) is going from anywhere between $70 up to $120

These games only went out of print a couple of months ago. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

That's not too terrible. Look at SMT 4 prices.

I actually bought the dlc physical (in addition to the expansion pass) because I loved the game so much.

Thing is, for a minimum print, will it sell out? XC2 collectors editions were available for a year and a half and heavily discounted. Only Smash increased it's popularity recently. It's still probably not worth reprinting for them because the initial batch took so long to sell.

Xenoblade 2 and Torna are the best games on the switch imho (no disrespect to BOTW). Expensive as hell now but if there is no other way to get it and they aren't reprinting, I say get it while you can before it is gone or more expensive. Two must haves for the switch collection. Torna's battle theme always reminds me of this.

I bought the game digitally, but I regret it. Wish I would have got a physical copy. It's my favorite Switch game to date, and I'm worried that Nintendo could pull the plug at any time.

I was sad to see that Torna was a bit more rare and out of print. I misplaced my copy (unopened and still in the same shopping bag it was brought home in), forever lost in a dimensional abyss pocket somewhere in my master bedroom never to be found again because I had decided to not open it for like a year.

I've made it a point to be better about opening games right away or putting them away immediately if I am not going to play for awhile so that I do not misplace them somewhere. RIP Torna.

3rd parties on Amazon are selling the European version of the game for quite a bit less than the US release.

EDIT: upon looking closer, even that $74 copy is a European one just incorrectly pictured.

I still don’t understand the notion that old games should be cheap. The only reason that used to happen is because inventory needed to be cleared. With digital that’s not an issue. There is no reason that a game only four years old should be cheaper unless the publisher truly wants that.

In non essential products, like video games, I don't think there's really any price things "should" have, so the prices and price expectation are set by the market. I agree there's no reason an older game should be cheaper, but when the industry standard is that you can buy games heavily discounted after a couple of years I'm not going to go cheer for the one company that's still charging $60.

And for me personally if I can play a heavily anticipated brand new release for the same price as a 4-5 years old game, I'm usually going to go with the newer release. So I do think there's value in discounting older games. Many franchises that I'm a fan of now I initially discovered after buying a game for cheap.

Then again Nintendo has fostered a user base that's willing to pay $60 for 4+ years old game, so good for them.

News eyes on XB2 because Pyra/Mythra in Smash. Would love to know how much that boosted sales. They are probably past 2.5 million by now.

I bought 2 off eBay about 4 months ago for $105. Used great condition. It had been on my list for a while and I was surprised physical was out of print.

Grabbed Crusin' Blast for this same reason. No copies in my area and only available online at the moment so I grabbed one for $29.99. There were a few physical copies of games I wanted a while back but they were never restocked so I decided to skip on them. Would be bummed like you OP as Xenoblade has turned into a must own RPG for me with Xenoblade 2.

Switch is region free I'd grab a copy that way before those skyrocket. I did this with Haunting Grounds when it was still sub $15 in PAL regions.

Ys VIII for the PS4 has a sizable difference between US and Europe versions.

This does not show there is demand at a level worth making more carts. Rare items on ebay increase in price, but there are only a small amount available. It is low supply, that is driving the price.

Why anyone would pay more for a used copy over digital one is beyond me. Maybe they figure it is cheaper to buy high then resell high. Or maybe the listings sit on ebay for ages until some moron buys it.

Collectors, people that want to actually own the product for life, etc. There's plenty of digital games that are cheap or have been free but the physical copies can go for around the same prices that this is going for.

I buy most of my Switch games digital but I buy certain games physical just because I generally have a good sense about these things. Almost all of my physical games have held or gone up in value.

Related to the Dread amiibo spikes, there are amiibo NFC card listings for $14-15. The temptation is real.
